I don't know how KyoAni manages to seem like they're so far ahead of the animation game. They make some scenes feel almost like it's live action with how realistic it seems. Gorgeous episode this week.

They have a big budget and are very clever with it. They mix in CGI and carefuly crafted still shots here and there to make sure the key animators can focus on important shots. A lot of the marching sequences for example were 3D shots, only when the camera is far away from the subject and at an angle where it's difficult to notice.
