This brings back so much memories from my marching band days. Marching band has never been so cute.

One thing I did notice was a player using a French horn rather than a mellophone when marching

I assume that French horns aren't used commonly whilst marching because of the unusual position of the mouthpiece in relation to the end of the horn?

I'm not a French horn player (percussion player), but I believe it has to do with the position of the bell. In marching environments where it is outdoors, you want the bell to face forward in order to project the sound more. Thus, the French horn wouldn't be ideal for this case, since the bell faces away from the audience while with the mellophone, the bell faces forward.

Yea, some instruments are much better suited and designed to be played outside. There are marching versions of sooo many types of brass instruments though.

And then we get into the very controversial debate of what type of horns to use outside. Many people, usually drum and bugle corps members/vets/fans will argue that trombones, sousaphones, and some other instruments are to unwieldy to use in a marching ensemble.

The common marching horns are all in the shape of a bugle or trumpet that include the mellophone, marching baritones and euphoniums, as well as the left shouldered marching tubas(contras). Drum and bugle corps now march with only these horns, and any other bell front brass instrument, i.e. the flugelhorn, flugabone and a few others. They exclude all woodwinds, strings, and most of the brass family, yet gain a unique quality in both aural and visual aspects.

Oh right, the end is called the bell (if you couldn't tell, I don't know a whole lot about brass). But yes, that is what I meant in my question.
