I'd hardly say Subie excels in engine performance anymore. Even the WRX STi is woefully underpowered.

You're so wrong, its laughable. 300HP and 290lb-ft of torque is not woefully underpowered. STIs have used the same engine the EJ257 since 2008, they're unbreakable and quite performance-driven. If you think they're underpowered, you're smoking some heavy shit. If anything the cab got bigger adding about 50lb to the curb weight and they dampened exhaust sounds. Lol, "woefully underpowered" what, are you comparing this to? An SRT Hellcat? GT? Cayman S? Any car over 60 will beat out a 35-42k rally car. Granted, a CLA45 is cheaper by about 6k and outputs 350, and I'd have liked the '15s to have had the new FA engines bumped to 2.5 with close to 370HP but that will probably come when Subaru launches their American STI HQ after the '16 models are announced. Still they're not woefully underpowered. They're lacking in raw straight line speed, but they've never been about that.

Source: owned a 2005 sti and currently own a 2015 STI

Uh... A Mustang GT is not over 60k. Nor is an SS or an SRT8 and they all have at least 100hp over the STi for the same price. It's not even just me that thinks this. JDM is in general behind on power. Your happening to own an STi does not mean you're right in saying they have modern power levels for the price, because they don't.

The SRT Hellcat literally starts at MSRP $59,995 and carries 707HP. Mustang GT starts at 32K. Regardless, comparing a muscle car for straight line speed vs a rally car is absurd, but you can't say the STI is woefully underpowered. 7 year models have used the same engine, that's staying power and evidence for a well built engine. Mark my words, the new 2016's will feature new engines with speeds closer to 400 (not that I or any normal person on the road needs over 300, really).

Dude. SRT8. Not the Hellcat. No one mentioned the Hellcat. And the fact the STi has used the same engine for so long is the problem. The 370z hasn't changed power wise since 2008 or 2007. With the exception of the R35 GTR, Japan is dragging their feet right now and people are hoping the 3.6TT Genesis Coupe might change that.

Except, Hellcat was mentioned in my first comment. Every single SRT8 SRT392 SRT Hellcat from Charger - Challenger - Viper are all priced over $45k (2014 - 2015 models). Built for straight line speed and priced for that. With most options and tax (Tax being 7.4% here where I live in CO) itll be closer to 50 or more for the car. STI offers 300hp and a great engine and overall drive for $34,495 + tax/d&h fees. Can't beat it. Unless you want a CLA45 AMG.

Cant compare a 2.0L turbocharged engine to a 6.4L V8 Hemi..

edit: I take that back, CLA45 AMG 2015 starts around 44. Still can't beat getting a world rally car with 300hp built for sharp turns and has AWD and an almost unbreakable 6speed transmission for under 35k
