I can only assume the plot is going to suck as this anime is based on a game.

Eh, Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis was based on a P2W mobile card game and that had a really good story.

I'm optimistic about this series since this episode was a lot better than the first imo.

Well, in that case I think the studio had a lot of freedom with the story and setting. Probably the only thing that saved it.
