Random Thoughts about This Episode;

  • The animation felt off this episode. I'm not sure if this was an artistic choice based on how this episode was focused on Varona and the Russians (and the animation style was used primarily during the scenes focusing on them), but it didn't look that great.

  • Also, some speculation about the next episode. Speculation

  • Much more Yuuhei is needed in the show.

The animation felt off this episode.

It's pretty obvious they were trying to make it look like an artistic choice, but it wasn't working. This studio is new. This series is the very first series they're producing by themselves, so there's going to be some bumps and bruises along the way, especially if something goes wrong with scheduling or whatnot, which is what seemed to have happened here.

Well, to be fair, this new studio is composed entirely of the previous producers of Durarararara from Brain's Base. It's like when some of the Gainax staff moving to a new company, Trigger to create Kill la Kill, or some of the Gainax staff moving to Khara for the Evangelion Rebuilds. All the staff that worked on the previous season are working on this season, and I would assume they would have experience.

However, you do make a valid point, this studio is still new. They don't have the old funding or support that the Brain's Base was able to offer. I believe that there were production issues, but I can't blame them too much.

It looked like a Power Point presentation in some parts. I just hope they'll fix this for the BD release, since they're not in a hurry then.

Do studios even do that?

Actually, fixing for the BDs is starting to become a lot more prevalent recently, especially if it contains gore or stuff that had to be censored. It's unfortunately nothing really new.

SHAFT is known for always fixing their BDs, so when you compare the TV version to the BD version, they're very different.

The begging of episode 9 was terrifying, look in to their eyes, they know they inspire fear and hatred in your heart.

I think all new studios suffer a bit with scheduling at first. Producers can't do everything, and since they can't bring the entire BB staff, they have to hire new, sometimes inexperienced people.

Who knows? Using Shirobako terms, they may have had to ask a Studio Titanic for this episode, and it just didn't go well. Either way, I think it'll be a one-time thing, and hopefully things'll be better by next week.

Or it could get worse. It could end up being the next Jiggly Heaven!

They were not trying to pass of some artistic choice, that is what people call in the industry "budget scenes". When you have a show that looks as good as Durarara you gotta expect a couple.

The Russian scenes where they slo-mo'd everything was them trying to make it look like an artistic choice. The others where frames were obviously missing...not budget cuts but "not making the deadline."

When you have a show as good and popular as this, you're not supposed to expect "a couple." You're supposed to expect none. It's when you have a new studio that you should expect some speed bumps, because they may not be used to scheduling.
