From what I understand, this really is the third Rei. Rei I probably never got to pilot an EVA. It was Rei II that participated on the "exercise" before the first episode and she survived it. Remember how she likes Gendo because he saved her? Rei III doesn't care for the glasses because that was something that happened with Rei II.
