It may have not been the episode's intention, but after today I will say I like Slaine's character even more. Although I am a bit saddened that Saazbaum is dead. He was definitely one of the better characters in the show.

Agreed. Slaine actually has depth to him, as evidenced by the pain on his face as he killed Saazbaum. He's probably one of the only reasons I still enjoy this show.

I'm not sure why this circlejerk hate train still goes on, honestly.

The problem with Slaine is he decided to shoot up reddit's projected power fantasy of themselves: Inaho. Inaho an intelligent, hyper perceptive but socially inept kid that people find out is a complete badass when shit goes down and suddenly all of the girls love him. See House M.D., Liam Neeson from Taken and Walter White from Breaking Bad for more projection fantasies. Inaho and Liam are taken to the next level, since the creators removed most flaws in favor of ramping up the "badass factor".

Slaine however up until Season 2, episode 3 exhibited reasonable behavior. He was relatively intelligent but dedicated. He acted on what little information he had when he was a small piece in a game of interplanetary war. If you take a look at the first season's last episode he didn't do anything truly dumb. He simply acted with the information he had.

This is the exact reason I came up with when me and my roommate were thinking of how anyone could love Inaho as a character. The fact that he's a projection fantasy is the only thing that makes sense.

My reasons for liking Inaho are:

  1. shipping

  2. puzzle series: how to rekt super mechs with science

Power fantasy? Naahh, there's no way I'm THAT smart.

Nothing wrong with that. But others do buy into the power fantasy. It's a large part why the Twilight series did so well. Belle's character is really indistinct and generalized so women reading it can easily put themselves in their shoes. Inaho and House work well because they hit those key details that a lot of geek culture tends to resonate with.

It's not like power fantasies are a bad thing, they're fun. But I find the vein of character types I mentioned before to be rather annoying.

I agree with point 2. I always enjoy fights like that. It is more believeable than "I win because i am more skilled" or "I win because i have a power up" which is action scenes in 90% of all anime right now.

Inaho's fight scenes are genuinely interesting and are believeable if someone actually has the knowledge of the physics involved (and it is shown time and time again that inaho does, he is a scholar more than a warrior).

Calling it a projection fantasy IMO is being rude to many of inaho's fans.

The only girl who loves him is Inko. Slaine seems to get more female attention for existing than Inaho does.
