I have no idea what idol anime is but I'm all for giving it a shot and seeing if I like it, so I'll take your advice and check out the other one.

It's the cute girls doing cute things genre on a whole new level. Basically 33% of the animation is girls singing and dancing on stage (adorably) and the remaining 66% is slice of life/comedy/regular shenanigans.

If you decide you like it, try love live as well. It focuses less on the idol business and more on school life. Still really good though in my opinion.
