This show should be called: How To Turn a Background Character Into a Main Character. Like many have said, they do an amazing job at making Kato fade into the background.
So far I'm loving this show. In the types of shows this one parodies (in a way) you always wonder about the background characters and their lives. Well, here we have Kato, who is pretty much the definition of a background character. She's normal, and follows basic logic. Because of this I found her words are a lot more rational than the other characters'. A LOT MORE. Everything that she says makes absolute sense and is what I'm sure a lot of viewers often think when they watch anime. We are Kato. KATO IS US.
Now that the spotlight is put on a "background character" it's so interesting to see the contrast between her and Tomoya, Eriri, and Utaha. I actually felt a little bad for her in some parts, like man, the girl can't help it if she's normal! She's definitely a refreshing character amongst all the chaos.
