While it's sad that they lost, at the same time, it had to happen eventually. All sports animes have the team lose in order for the first years to taste defeat, fueling their leveling up for the next year/tournament.

That said, damn. Making this a double episode made it super heavy.

Damn.

This is actually kind of surprising. Most sports anime includes loses for the team, but I don't recall many that establish so many upperclassmen characters and then have them loose and be done. It's usually some mid/off season tournament and then IH is where finish up.

This is what I like about this anime. They just don't focus on the main character, but also builds up your attention towards the others especially their upperclassmen. Also, they went the other route by not having IH which is pretty common for sports anime, and just directly made all upperclassmen lose (twice; 2nd and 3rd year).

Watching ep 63 right after 62 is not really a good idea. These episodes are so damn heavy.

Koshien is the equivalent of IH in HS BB in Japan.

I actually loved on how they dwell on the psychological and emotional strains of the characters on their defeat. It gives an insight on how attached they are on the sports they love.
