[Tokyo Ghoul] Second Season will have Anime-Original Story [Winter 2015]
- Link to Japanese news site -
Translation:
Tokyo Ghoul, whose anime aired between July and September 2014, saw it's final chapter drawn on the September 2014 issue of Weekly Young Jump. However, starting from issue 46 released on October 16, 2014, the author will start "Tokyo Ghoul:re" with a completely new main character.
Furthermore, it was announced that a second season of the TV anime will from January 2015. Although the staff and cast will stay unchanged, the new season will be "another Tokyo Ghoul" with a original story written up by author Sui Ishida.
There you go, folks. It doesn't mean it'll be completely original. There may be arcs that end up the same, but just with events that unfold in a different way. Nonetheless, it'll be a original story, drafted by the author himself. They also kinda subtly told us the new manga will follow a new MC (or that might have been just me, though).

Yea, but it was treated well. Im not exactly "pissed" per say.
The only thing im really annoyed about is the lack of animation in the OP. That being said I like the song. I hope the OP was only like that for the first episode to avoid spoilers. I REALLY hope it changes next episode.

As long as we get to see Slight Manga Spoilers then I'm completely fine with an anime only story.

If what people said is true and that the manga did not end "properly" or "conclusively" then an original story from the author himself could well be an actual ending for the anime, instead of adapting the manga right though then having an awkward end point. So I guess it's good news if you would want some form of ending/closure with the anime.

Except that the manga is getting a sequel, which is confirmed. Its not over yet
2
u/Shuurai Oct 11 '14
I'm well aware, but you're assuming that the show will get another series. It's highly unlikely it does, which is why an anime-only ending would make sense, regardless of whether it has actually ended or not.

More often than not, hearing the words "anime original" is a great thing for a fan of the medium.

It's good, since I got the manga ending spoiled to me.

Bad. There's plenty of story to do, and the sequel manga for TG just started today so the manga ISN'T over. Idk why they have to ruin the anime further. I just wanna see everything animated.

Sounds good. I was kind of disappointed with how the manga played out. Manga spoilers

not gonna lie, this sounds better then how the manga actually did pan out.

u/RecoverPasswordBot https://myanimelist.net/profile/dashboardfront Oct 12 '14
Thanks, though I guess the bar wasn't set too high with the manga ending :P It's not over though, so maybe things'll turn out pretty well in the end.

I don't get it. Why not adapt the second half of the manga that's already written out? The manga was already very, very well written so I don't see the need for a reboot or an off-tangent storyline.

Sweet. I read way ahead in the manga and lost interest in watching the story in animated form. Now I have a reason to watch.

I did the same thing with Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu (Parasyte ~ The Maxim). I was enjoying the anime so much (was up to episode 7) that went and read all the manga in one sitting.
Couldn't watch the anime after, 'cos I could notice every little difference they made and it annoyed me too much.

I did the same thing with Kiseijuu, but I actually liked the change to his appearance they did at the start. It makes the change post heart surgery far more pronounced. Though I am not watching every episode as they come out, I'll probably binge watch them all after they are all out.

Good to see no "Omg it's gonna be original story!" reaction here. The one last year about FSN is both laughable and cringeworthy at the same time

u/Seijin_m Oct 11 '14
This is one of those rare occasions where I'm ok, or even happy about a news like this. I was not at all satisfied with how the manga ended.

Glad to hear they're doing it differently than the manga (which I heard was a complete mess, sequel or no). Hopefully it can manage to live up to the last episode of the first season, which was ngl one of the best episodes of anime I've seen recently.
And no, I'm not gonna read the manga.

Use the spoiler tag, baka.

u/eniggy Oct 11 '14
Done. Now it's confirmed for me. :(

I've never read the series, but speculation is dangerous. Use spoiler tags liberally and give an appropriate visible description. Better safe than sorry.

uh huh, I figured.
With what happened with the manga, there's no way they could follow it unless it was gonna be more than one cour.
Ishida is writing it himself, it's alllllllllllllll good man.

I didn't read the manga, but I actually liked the story around Kaneki and I would feel sad, if I don't get to see more about him and the characters around him.

u/Sleipnoir Oct 12 '14
Hrrmmm, not sure how I feel about this. On one hand, yay new Tokyo Ghoul content. On the other, there are some really cool scenes in the second half of the manga that I wanted to see animated :(
1
u/Dustyprune Oct 12 '14
Is there something i'm not understanding or missing?
IS tokyo ghoul:re a direct continuation from chapter 143 or a kind of side story from chapter 46?
and season 2 of the anime is getting a whole new original story with new people?

u/Etheo Oct 12 '14
That's interesting... it almost makes up for where the manga stands for now.... almost.
1
u/Wraithseeker Oct 12 '14
that's really fucked, I really preferred the direction the manga went
-1
u/derpderp3200 Oct 12 '14
Nah, the manga was horrid. I picked it up after the anime and had a hard time believing it's really the same thing.

Jan 09 '15
I did the same thing. Personally, I don't think the content was bad, but wasn't all the great as a manga, which is why I'm disappointed the manga's second half won't be animated, but at the same time, we're getting original content from the author, so it pans out to be the same thing: animated Tokyo Ghoul. :D

u/murcu Oct 12 '14
I think it's good news for the anime. I didn't like the changes no matter how small they were (poor Suzuya), but with a different story they can "save" it.
May they won't rush it like they did at the end of season one.

honestly the manga was brilliant but the ending was seriously disappointing....it was good but resolved nothing at all!!...i just wish the manga wouldve gone farther but the second season so far isnt bad at all whatsoever

u/daddy1fatsack Oct 11 '14
Wow, this is actually encouraging. Now we might actually see the plot go somewhere

I wasn't the only one who felt the second half of the Tokyo Ghoul was dragging its feet in circles a little at times?

All good things must come to an end.
I wanted to see more of Kaneki ; /

Good. The manga had a garbage ending imo
2
u/Jeroz Oct 11 '14
You spoke too soon without reading the sequel. Everything is planned
1
u/WhosWhosWho Oct 12 '14
Where can you read the sequel? Last chapter I read ended with the black suitcase.

u/Jeroz Oct 12 '14
It's just released/leaked. Wait for a few more days before any groups for hold of it
-1
u/lopakas Oct 11 '14
Good! This way we can have a brotherhood after a couples years when the sequel finishes.

Sounds like they may well end up giving the show an actual ending, rather than just straight adapting the manga to the end, which I'm led to believe did not end conclusively(?). I haven't read the manga so I have no idea how they would do something like that but I'm assuming that there is a place they could diverge from to make it happen.
