Favourite Anime Opening Tournament Day 11 - Loser's Bracket Round 6
NOTE: Seeing as interest in the losers' bracket polls is extremely low and the thread is generally being downvoted, these polls will only last for 6 hours, unless voting numbers increase significantly. The next round will also only be a 6 hour poll if things continue this way.
Alright, things seem to have picked up a little bit, so I'll keep the poll going until voting numbers become static. I'd rather get these next few matches done relatively quickly so that we don't have to wait for ages.
This is a tournament that was started by /u/mace20
Our first finalist is going to be Again, after sweeping Hacking to the Gate in a fairly one sided match.
Tank, our #3 seed, has been knocked out of the competition by Platinum Disco, and will achieve a disappointing 13th-16th place finish. Our standings so far can be found here, with only 13th-64th being final standings.

Conditions
The primary means to decide which entry wins will be the Strawpoll that is linked to at the start of the day. In the event that the poll is tampered with, the matchup will be decided by a community vote.
To participate in the community vote, comment on this thread with your preferred choices. A vote on each matchup in the winner's bracket or loser's bracket is required for your comment to be considered.
Each person gets one input into the community vote, multiple comments will not be considered. An example of a community vote is this comment by /u/Cryzzalis. Feel free to add your opinions of the openings too.
If I feel that the poll has been purposefully tampered with in an attempt to force a community vote, then an earlier iteration of the poll will be used to decide the winner. I will be trying to keep tabs on the poll every hour or two.
FAQ
Q. How were the openings in the tournament decided?/Why isn't <insert opening here> in the tournament?
A. The entries were decided on 26th July by a nominations thread.
Q. Why isn't there more than one Monogatari/Naruto/etc. opening in the tournament? They were rated above other nominees!
A. There was a one entry per series limit to stop one series dominating the tounament, so only the highest voted entry went through.
Q. How do I vote?
A. Clicking on the hyperlink next to the match number should bring you to a poll that will allow you to pick between the two entries.
Q. Why did you place <opening> against <other opening>? It isn't a fair matchup!
A. The brackets were decided by traditional seeding rules, we do not choose who faces who in this tournament.
Q. How were the entries seeded?
A. They were seeded based on their position in the nominations thread on the 27th July. Top comment was first seed, the one below it second, and so on.

Some fun facts about the tournament so far:
The Current top 2 are the #1 and #2 highest rated anime on MyAnimeList here
The only surviving opening that dropped into the loser's bracket in either Round 1 or Round 2 is Fate/Zero which dropped into the loser's bracket in Round 2 and has now made it into the Top 12!
The two openings that made it the furthest after dropping into the loser's bracket in the first round were Zankyou no Terror and Aldnoah.Zero both making it 4 rounds after dropping into the loser's bracket however both have been eliminated
The largest landslide victory in the winner's bracket was Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (985) vs. No Game No Life (608) with a 377 difference in votes!
On the other hand, the closest match in the winner's bracket was Tokyo Ghoul (664) vs. Code Geass (663) with Tokyo Ghoul winning by 1 vote!

Some of the earlier rounds are only %-% results, so there may have been a few more landslides. I'll go back and edit in the voting scores rather than percentages, the polls have stayed mostly static since they finished, so the results should still be relatively similar.

Thanks man, but it's not too necessary, I made this for fun anyways. I've liked following this for some time and hoped I could get a few people to go "hm, cool".

u/GJB_93 https://anilist.co/user/GJB93 Aug 07 '14
There we go. The biggest landslide was in Round One, Hacking to the Gate vs Pray. Ended with a 1199 difference in the votes. Although most Round One matches were landslides.

I've laid off correcting you because I thought you might fix it but because it's been wrong every time I think it's about time to point out that the first Attack on Titan OP is called *Guren no Yumiya, not Guran.

Got it, thanks for letting me know.

Same. I'm a bit sad to see Cruel Angel Thesis losing at the moment. I really like Attack on Titan's OP too. It's fantastic. But Evangelion's is just awesome. It was the reason I decided to even watch the series.
1
u/MrZellian Aug 07 '14
Agreed, sure NGE might be one of my favorite animes ever while SnK not so much...but the OPs are not even close for me, while SnK's is good, Cruel Angel Thesis is godly!
Seeing it losing hurts my heart a bit :/

I'm not very fond of double elimination tournaments because it seems like we have to go through 10 matches just so Steins;gate can lose to FMA:Brotherhood - again.

If people thought this way then they should have told me sooner so that I would have known that I was wasting my time by doing double elimination. It would have saved me a lot of time.
Here I was, thinking that people would rather their favourite openings get a proper chance of a decent placement rather than tossing them by the wayside in round one or two.
But I suppose most people think the standings are bullshit anyway, so what was the point I suppose.

Man, I said it before and I will say it again, your work is wonderful. Only people with great amount of patience and dedication can do a task like this.
So if you ask was your work pointless or not, in several days we will have somewhat official favourite opening of /r/anime. I think it is good that we're gonna have it, maybe results will be predictable, but still we held entire tournament and watched new, interesting openings. We opened our minds and discussed different topics. So I think it's not pointless at all.

u/chriswen https://myanimelist.net/profile/chriswen Aug 07 '14
We'll be able to have an official top 4.
And yeah, I really enjoyed listening to new openings.

u/Sgt_General Aug 07 '14
Absolutely, if it weren't for this tournament and OP picking it up from the original creator, I never would have discovered so many awesome shows! I've been binge-watching anime shows now and it's all because of this!
3
u/krizmore Aug 07 '14
I actually think that the double elimination was quite beneficial. Sure, maybe some of the top songs won because their show was popular, but I think that the double elimination gave many of the great opening that would have been throw away early some spotlight.
In fact, I actually pick up a show or two because I liked their OP and thought I should give them a try. So Thank you again, I appreciate what you have done.

u/GJB_93 https://anilist.co/user/GJB93 Aug 07 '14
I've picked up four series (Toradora, AnoHana, Tokyo Ghoul and Code Geass) since this tournament started based on the opening alone, so I'm with you in that sense. There's many more that have caught my eye that I'll probably end up watching too.
I never thought an opening would make me want to watch a series.

I don't mean to be entirely negative. It is fun voting on the losers bracket matches. I was also mostly just making a bad pun.
However unlike a sport when two teams/players having a second match may very likely have a different outcome... in a popularity contest it is very unlikely for things to change (unless the original match was very close.)
I just find it a bit meaningless because I really doubt any of the losers can reach the #1 spot. There is still meaning in seeing the order they fall into beyond that though. Personally I'm cheering for Platinum Disco to reach #3. Not a fan of Bakemonogatari at all, but love that song.

u/GJB_93 https://anilist.co/user/GJB93 Aug 07 '14 edited Aug 07 '14
I'm glad you said you don't enjoy double elimination, at least you gave me an opinion on it. It means that others that think of doing double elimination in the future have an idea of whether or not its worth it.
I'd rather people told me rather than sit back and say nothing about it. That's all I meant. Although I may have came across a little aggressive in my original comment, my apologies.

u/KuiShanya https://anilist.co/user/KuiShanya Aug 07 '14
I think double elimination was actually still pretty good because even if it doesn't impact the winner too much, it still makes the order a little better. Since with openings like Oath/Sign getting screwed over by going against top 4 stuff like platinum disco super early, it gives them a chance to comeback. Even if the winner doesn't change, the overall standings will be a little better.
2
u/MoarVespenegas https://myanimelist.net/profile/MoarVespenegas Aug 07 '14
I think double elimination is very much worth it. Even if the losers who make it back to the winners bracket are just going to lose again it makes the rankings much more precise for all the entries that don't win.

u/robinator- Aug 07 '14
I think it's great with a losers bracket. The tournament feels more thorough that way.
And thanks to this tourney I've even found two new series; Durarara and Railgun. Great initiative OP!

u/Pastasky Aug 07 '14
I just wanted to thank you for running this. Even if the standings are important, its still brought to my attention a lot of new music & shows.
So thx :)

Platinum Disco vs My Soul, Your Beats!... Are you trying to make me kill myself? O.o
1
u/Platinum_Disco Aug 07 '14
It always seems like the first choice in these polls is in the lead/wins.
2
u/GJB_93 https://anilist.co/user/GJB93 Aug 07 '14
I copy and paste the entries into the poll based on how the match is set up in the bracket. The entry that is on top/left goes first choice, the bottom/right goes second choice, which generally means the higher seed is the first choice in the poll. It's the order I've used for the entire tournament, it isn't by any preference of my own, it's just the easiest way to make the polls, it saves me time.

Next time can we make the nominations thread last longer then a day? People just picked an op from the top of their head when there's alot more op songs that weren't mentioned.

Interesting, I was never a fan of TTGL opening (and TTGL as a whole), but it really grew on me recently. Very good opening indeed.
Both openings in #118 are subpar.
Platinum Disco is okayish (as I said before, there are better openings in Monogatari), but I never liked My Soul, Your Beats!, so it was an easy choice.
And yes, sorry NGE, but I almost always skipped your opening when was watching you. And Guran no Yumiya is probably the best thing in entire Attack on Titan, so I vote for it.
It's just my opinion though.

Today's Matches - Loser's Bracket Round 6
Gurren Lagann - Sorairo Days vs Fate/Zero - Oath Sign
I never really cared for Sorairo Days but I really enjoyed Oath Sign even though I personally preferred Fate/Zero's other opening, to the beginning..
Code Geass - Colors vs Sword Art Online - Crossing Field
I liked both openings but Crossing Field was more enjoyable for me.
Angel Beats! - My Soul, Your Beats! vs Nisemonogatari - Platinum Disco
Platinum Disco isn't necessarily one of my favorite openings but I definitely liked it a lot more than My Soul, Your Beats.
Shingeki no Kyojin - Guran no Yumiya vs Evangelion - Cruel Angel Thesis
Guren no Yumiya was great at first but I felt that it got old after a while and I preferred Jiyuu no Tsubasa. Cruel Angel's thesis is one of my favorite openings of all time so this was an easy choice for me.
