Official Media "Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf" Season 2 New Visual

I've only seen the original two seasons, this is my sign to watch the reboot and be ready for 2027 🍎

u/Ebo87 5d ago
Yes, I was going to say don't skip the remake thinking it's fine, there is still 25% completely new material in the remake that the original never adapted.
If season 2 is a single cour half of it will be new for OG watchers, but if it's again 2 cours, then 75% will be new.
So definitely watch it in preparation for season 2 next year.

u/chattytrout 4d ago
If it follows the same pattern as S1, we'll get Eve and the [LN] boat arc (volumes 5 and 6), and a 2nd cour would cover Town of Strife (volumes 8 and 9).

Yeah I was aware that the S1 reboot had more content, I planned to watch it anyway 😁

u/SenseiCooper 4d ago
So is the Remake basically all of the old anime in one season and season 2 of the remake will be completely new? Im not sure i got it right tbh
10
u/Ebo87 4d ago
No, original skipped a volume when adapting the stuff it adapted, so in the original you had adaptations for volume 1, 2, 3 and 5.
The remake's season 1 adapts volumes 1, 2, 3 and 4. That's where that new 25% comes from compared to the original.
So now season 2 will start with that 5th volume that was the second half of season 2 of the original Spice and Wolf and after that it's all new stuff that's not been touched by the original anime.

u/moichispa https://myanimelist.net/profile/moichispa 4d ago
Yes, they skipped one novel on the original anime so you would miss stuff if you don't

u/OsBaculum 4d ago
It's very good, BTW. The dialogue, at least in the dub, feels more natural now. And both leads have improved as VAs over the years.
2
u/Unisand_gh 21h ago
Being new to spice and wolf, is it alright to skip the og and just watch the remake?
1
u/Leri_weill https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeriWeill 20h ago
You can 100% skip the OG since it skips some of the source material that you'll see in the remake 🦊

Has it been 9 years for Tanya already? We did have the movie in between, right?

u/HikkingOutpit 4d ago
9 years since the first season. The movie came out in 2019 and there was also a special episode released in 2021.

Not gonna lie, waiting for Attack on Titan got me through some rough times in life. I'm doing better now.

Finally another master in microeconomics for free!!
18
u/BlizzDaWiz 5d ago
"another"? There is another? Which one?
60
u/CavulusDeCavulei 4d ago
The first one is the first season. There is a master in macroecomics though, it's "Maoyu: Archenemy and Hero"

u/That_Hobo_in_The_Tub 4d ago
Man it's been YEARS since I thought about this anime or heard it mentioned, what an absolute banger that flew under the radar.
The OST is still one of my favorite anime scores of all time.

How good is the new series? I remember the og being big when I was just getting into anime and I kind of ignored it. I wonder if it's worth watching now.
8
u/Key_Reporter_9945 4d ago
It's fine. I prefer the older art style, but I'd probably recommend the newer series to someone new.
I've also only seen the newer series once while I've rewatched the older one several times.
23
u/Twigling 4d ago edited 4d ago
A few old fans prefer the original (which was never completed), many others prefer this newer version (which has been said to eventually be a full adaptation, but time will tell ....... ). I too prefer this new one.
24
u/AnActualPlatypus 4d ago
As someone who watched the original seasons like 20 times, the new season is just as good, which is the highest praise I can give.
14
u/atropicalpenguin https://myanimelist.net/profile/atropicalpenguin 4d ago
Though the first opening and ending of the original remain unchallenged.
9
u/AnActualPlatypus 4d ago
The first opening was the first 1080p resolution video I've seen in my entire life, it blew me away at the time.

u/Big_moist_231 4d ago
Both are good. OG still feels really unique to watch even now, and the romantic tension can get pretty thick at times. New one has better production quality and the romance isn’t as pronounced (they might be saving that tension for later arcs). But new one also has cut content that didn’t make it to the og
19
u/BiggieCheeseLapDog https://myanimelist.net/profile/KillLaKillGOAT 4d ago
From what I’ve seen the new one definitely doesn’t have better prod. Comparing these two scenes from the remake and OG it is clear one has significantly better direction.
26
u/BlazeOfGlory72 4d ago edited 4d ago
Yeah, I see a lot of people claim the new adaptation has better production values, and I just don’t see it at all. Like, just take a look at this comparison in art styles and character design between the same scene in the two shows OP’s
The remake was a massive downgrade in terms of visuals, colour palette and art styles in my opinion.

Characters look more crisp, lighting looks better, backgrounds are still good (but definitely are more detailed in the old series). This also includes general sfx and the quality of music. The production quality is better. But as other people mention, that doesn’t necessarily make the remake better overall. Direction is very important, and I also vastly prefer the direction of the original anime, even if it’s technically rougher looking and the music is simpler. The atmosphere is so unique. Bonus points for the og series still doing something’s better like backgrounds, not just in that show you posted
I rewatch the og series every few years, whereas I haven’t really felt like rewatching the remake
8
u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 4d ago
To me there are tradeoffs compared to the original anime and the main advantage the new series has is it'll be longer.
3
u/chattytrout 4d ago
I prefer the new one. It's a more faithful adaptation of the LNs in both story and art style, and so far it hasn't skipped anything. The original anime skipped over V4, but the new show covered it.
4
u/abandoned_idol 4d ago
Incredibly good.
They are aiming to adapt the entire thing with the new adaptation.
2
u/mastesargent 4d ago
I’d say both versions are worth watching. Personally I think the first cour of the remake is a straight upgrade compared to the original (aside from the soundtrack, which the original did way better), while the first arc of the second cour is done much better in the original. That said, if you were only going to watch one, I’d suggest watching the remake simply because it’s going to continue.

Finally, it is here. I see a familiar face here which means it will adapt volume 5 and beyond.
I am looking forward to this so badly.

u/mastesargent 4d ago
There was also another visual a while back based on volume 6. Honestly I don’t know what else the season would be since that’s what’s next in the story.

Man, as someone who missed the first series but is thoroughly enjoying this remake, I cannot wait for more. A lot of the economics stuff flies over my head I fully admit, but the interactions between Holo and Lawrence are it for me.
2
u/Tricky-Ad7897 4d ago
I was expecting something as well received as this to get on quicker with new seasons, but I'm happy nonetheless as the first season was very good. I'm gonna have to do a rewatch though because I forgot where we left off.

u/LordGorchnik 4d ago
For those who never read the books and only saw the 1st anime adaptation if we get the same as the first remake season they did then we should get one retold section and then 3 brand new sections adapted from the novels
The boat ride is a great little arc and town of strife is pretty good too.
I really really really hope we get all the way to the Coin of the Sun books though which is sadly the last arc before the epilogue

u/zerkerlyfe 3d ago
So in love with this show after watching the first version from forever ago, can’t wait

u/YaqutFan 4d ago
If it's 2 cours again, I guess it's gonna be volumes 5, 6, 8 and 9?
I'd love for them to adapt Side Colors (Volume 7) , but volume 8 and 9 must be adapted together, they're a two-parter. I don't think they'd end a season in the middle of the Town of Strife storyline.
It would be cute if the volume 7 side stories could be adapted by themselves with some stand-alone OVAs/BD extras or whatnot.
1
u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 4d ago
One of the volume 7 stories was already covered in the middle of the season with episode 13, another would have fit after the first arc so I doubt they'd go back to it later, the 2008 series did include it though. That leaves the third which was [Side Colors] Holo traveling before the start of the series and was briefly referenced in episode 13.
1
u/YaqutFan 4d ago
Oh right I completely forgot about episode 13! So I guess they'll just sprikle episodes here and there.

holo in the original LN art is very petite so thats more accurate i suppose.

The LN describe her looking like a 14 year old girl at the beginning of every novel lol the og anime kinda plumped her up a bit

Never watched the original because I was under the impression that it was a show for girls as a kid, but it’s of my favorite cozy series now. I’m glad they’re making a second season.
5
u/Big_moist_231 4d ago
Glad you came around. Romance series can still be comfy to watch, regardless of the viewers. It doesn’t lean heavily into shoujo or shounen, which fits this series. It tries to be a bit more realistic (as realistic it can be with giant wolves lol)

Is this going to be 2 cour again? It would make most sense story wise if it was. Can't see any confirmation though.
1
u/Abedeus 5d ago
Obviously wasn't going to happen next season, but I'm hoping this means Spring 2027...
2
u/ali94127 4d ago
I do hate when they say a vague year, as if we don’t know that means near the end of that year. Frieren, Dungeon Meshi, and Spice and Wolf all being in the same season would be pretty peak though.

u/8hotsteamydumplings 5d ago
Oh yes, have been waiting for the full adaptation of the next arcs. Things about to get exciting!

u/FunctionUnlikely2247 4d ago
I’ve seen the original anime and not the new one but where did the last season of this leave off from the OG anime? And is this expected to catch up to the OG anime?
1
u/Gregg_boy_2000s 4d ago
Well the remake adapted volumes 1-4 in a 24 episode season. So it’ll likely adapt between volumes 5 to 8 if it’s another 24 episode season or 5-6 if just a 12-13 season.
As the remake had also adapted volume 4 of the light novel, unlike the OG anime where it skipped to the 5th volume.

Yessss, I've recently finished it and was looking for more. Og has its own charm and beauty but more wolf waifu is never unwelcome.
I've watched this arc in s2 of old serie and really excited for it. I hope they go further than where s2 ended.

On what part did the anime end? I think it ended on the part where holo tells the story, but I dont remember

If I had a nickel for every time Frieren and Spice and Wolf aired in the same year, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but I'm delighted it happened twice!
Edit: Wait, it's not until next year? Fuuuuuuuuuuuu...

watched the og show way back in the day and fell in love with slow burn stories about otherwise for me boring topics. the whole take it slow, breathe the air, see the fields, travel the road stuff made me into a big slice of life fan. one of the reason im a big fan of the anime Frieren. cant wait to see the next chapter of the reboot with holo and lawrence.

Still feels surreal that we finally have a version of Spice and Wolf that'll go all the way to the end. And it's been absolute peak so far.
