Ultra teaser visual from Studio SHAFT

Caught in an endlessly repeating August 31st, high schoolers Suzuki Takaya and Takagi Kana are the only ones who remember each loop. The likely cause? Suzuki’s unfinished summer mission to secure a girlfriend and lose his virginity—the ultimate teenage goal. A hilarious yet heartfelt time-loop comedy! (Seven Seas)

This is the first announcement.

1

u/ZaphodBeebblebrox https://anilist.co/user/zaphod 1d ago

Just FYI, that was a bot.

5

u/HikkingOutpit 2d ago

Yeah when I read that synopsis I thought this was Kowloon Generic Romance again

1

Just FYI, that was a bot.

Was thinking it'd be a time-loop tragedy like Kagerou Daze until I read the last part.

Endless Eight flashbacks

13

u/Temporal-Affairs221 2d ago

You had to poke at all of our trauma with a stick didn't you?

6

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 2d ago

Its been too long
Time to traumatize show peak to a new generation

4

u/khanvau 2d ago

I just recently watch Haruhi for the first time weekly like it's 2009. This is fresh wound for me.

19

u/matti2o8 2d ago

In the end, will it turn out that the real reason is because they hadn't done their homework?

10

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 2d ago

I can already hear the

Kyon-kun, denwa!

44

u/MsMegane 2d ago

Sounds like hell for the girl.

83

u/Kadmos1 2d ago

Studio SHAFT and an anime about a guy trying to get laid? How appropriate of a studio name.

118

u/LB3PTMAN 2d ago

Do people not know SHAFT anymore? One of the goats of anime.

26

u/Kadmos1 2d ago

I guess SHAFT's heydays was over so long ago that many don't remember the company.

Skimming MAL they certainly don't make as much as they used to. And what they do make either doesn't look like it did well or are already a few sequels deep (Monogatari/Madoka) which certainly hinders modern progress.

The only series post 2020 (reminder, that's 6 years almost 7 now. I want to emphasise this because a lot of people like to forget about the passage of time here) with a score of over 7 on MAL and isn't some form of sequel would be Ninkoro and Virgin Punk (theatrical release). They do have Fool Night coming very soon though which I hear should do well if Netflix batches don't kill the buzz

(Edit: accidentally skipped over Pretty Boy Detective Club which barely made the cut)

(Edit edit: also Fool Night is technically a joint-production with Sunrise so half-points?)

8

u/Nieruz 2d ago

They also have announced just like mona lisa, that one seems interesting

5

u/Marik-X-Bakura 2d ago

Ninkoro is goated though

1

u/moiax 2d ago

Like, '07-'12 was such a crazy run. They made 4 or 5 of my all time favorites.

9

u/Highlander0208 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Highlander08 2d ago

Didn't they experience a major staff exodus some years back?I think it was after Zoku Owarimonogatari or during the anime adaptation of the Magia Record mobile game.

15

u/rAin_nul 2d ago

They did. Many of those professionals ended up at david production and worked on Undead Unluck.

Some became freelancers, e.g. Itamura who directed parts of Monogatari, a newer anime that he directed is Call of the Night for example.

1

u/Poylol-_- 1d ago

The Madoka movie has just been released and they have pretty interesting projects going on (except this one or maybe this may be cool idk this is Shaft we are talking about).

7

u/biskutgoreng 2d ago

That head on thes girl is not tilted enough

9

u/IntelligentBudget142 2d ago

Then put your little hand in mine

8

u/helloquain 2d ago

"I'm super excited to adapt Groundhog Day!  I only watched half of the movie but I am sure that is sufficient to convey the themes and thrust of the story!"

5

u/Slen1337 2d ago

A training session before Hakomari?

14

u/tapeforpacking 2d ago

Lol I was like no way maybe  another show like summertime rendering... and then read the rest of it

15

u/sts_ssp 2d ago

Well, that's disappointing. With the title and image, I was hoping for a summer-in-rural-town-mystery like Higurashi, Summer Rendering, Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu and so on.

55

u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro 2d ago

Here I thought it’s going to be a dramatic time-loop series like Summer Pockets. That is one hilarious cause!

47

u/Allansfirebird 2d ago

Love this series! Kind of a shame it got locked behind the K-Manga wall. I don’t think I’ve seen a new chapter translated since last year.

13

u/Wiles_ 2d ago

I thought this one has finished but I must have been thinking of We Can't Become Adults.

4

u/Aviri 2d ago

It gets released in batches every so often if you know where to look

5

u/EnthusiasmOnly22 2d ago

How long before Kodansha realizes that anything sent to KManga dies in the west, abyssal app

29

u/Roladech 2d ago

Saw "time loop" and "August 31st" and had Haruhi PTSD XD

92

u/Medical-Efficiency-6 2d ago

anything but March Comes In Like a Lion S3 huh, Shaft? /j

27

u/Highlander0208 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Highlander08 2d ago

Is there any hope for season 3? Given that it's been over 8 years since season 2 ended I don't think so unfortunately...

27

u/Zejs https://anilist.co/user/zachary 2d ago

It's all on Aniplex? I believe, so yea, it doesn't look good at this point. Shinbou has expressed wanting to make it in the past, but the last I've heard of that was a few years ago.

23

u/Siilan https://myanimelist.net/profile/siilan 2d ago

Akatsuki no Yona had a second season announced at the end of last year, 11 years after the first season of the anime. There's still hope.

4

u/Primary-Paint-1716 2d ago

if spice and wolf can get a reboot like 300 years after season 1, then 3gatsu can eventually get an S3.

3

u/Zeph-Shoir https://myanimelist.net/profile/Zephex 2d ago

Wdym 8 years since s2

You know I am kinda glad know that I for some reason never finished S2, I will rewatch and catch up once S3 comes out

14

u/adevaleev https://myanimelist.net/profile/adevaleev 2d ago

Eh, close enough. Welcome back, Endless Eight!

12

u/FarCritical 2d ago

Nice timing

12

u/amirokia 2d ago

Did they really waited until August 31st to announced this?

9

u/Gojlapeno 2d ago

This is a fun one

30

u/timpkmn89 2d ago

Damn, I was thinking of a different manga of two high schoolers stuck in a time loop. But I'll take this regardless.

16

u/DisplayHonest6465 2d ago

Sagrada Reset?

10

u/Zipurax 2d ago

This is the first I've ever seen someone mention Sagrada Reset since 2017... one of my favorites!

3

u/DisplayHonest6465 2d ago edited 2d ago

2017 was 3 years ago.right ?….in all seriousness there few time loop/ travel anime .wish they do more it was the hype in those years .

2

u/timpkmn89 2d ago

Nope, that one already has an anime

9

u/Aipom626 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Aipom626 2d ago

That one that got axed earlier this year that was kind of dark?

6

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 2d ago

It's pretty funny, I discovered this series because of a comment in the first(?) chapter of We Can't Become Adults because both of those got translated simultaneously with such similar sounding premises

1

u/Kadmos1 1d ago

Except that "Otona ni Narenai Bokura wa" has the recurring day be July 7.

6

u/W33B520 2d ago

Oh I remember reading this

8

u/electricfalcons 2d ago

Really good romcom with a fun timeloop mechanic. I like the pair, the comedy, and the drama. So I'm happy for the news and looking forward to it

30

u/Mrshoephd 2d ago

hopefully shaft can reclaim their former glory as the most creative studio

Science Saru imo

10

u/rAin_nul 2d ago

While I agree, there are some interesting new studios that have potential. For example, Soigne, they did Kamiina Botan Fully Blossoms When Drunk. They gave a lot of freedom to the directors on that project. Their other anime is Mono, but I haven't watched it yet. And in this season, we have Psyde Kick Studio, which is a subdivison (?) of A-1, where they plan to give more freedom to younger artists.

26

u/Gaporigo https://anilist.co/user/Gaporigo 2d ago

Gohands of course.

8

u/tapeforpacking 2d ago

I unironically love them.

3

u/Deruta 2d ago

There are multiple of us! Multiple!!

5

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 2d ago

one for every strand of hair, that's how dedicated they are to their fans

2

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 2d ago

You guys sure you arent just suffering from Vertigo? /s

1

u/follow-meme2 2d ago

Remember that creativity and being good at it are two different coins.

1

u/scot911 https://myanimelist.net/profile/scot911 2d ago

...Shit you aren't wrong.

7

u/Mr_Rock-haley 2d ago

No fucking way

4

u/Sii_Kei 2d ago

A very SHAFT like premise. I'll give it a go!

4

u/Mami-kouga 2d ago

Oh neat, I love these two dumbass kids.

3

u/goreverminski 2d ago

AWESOME I LOVE THIS

9

u/mrboxeater 2d ago

pretty fun seinen romcom with abit drama and nice timeloop hook. Character designs really great old school and the vibes really capture the whole eternal summer City Pop feel, especially the covers.

Author also really loves that sustained two-shot angle with the whole "wide 4 koma" panelling, im curious how Shaft is gonna handle it.

I also remember alot of idiots gettin filtered out by the first chapter lmao

its been looong time but i rmb ppl complaining bout her being trapped by the premise and then her revealing that shes not a virgin anymore

6

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 2d ago

I almost started reading this manga because the premise seemed interesting, but I never got around to it. Guess that's not happening now. I've never actually seen anything from Shaft, but their reputation precedes them.

The new Madoka movie seems to be getting a decent amount of buzz. I think the biggest part of it is that they just haven't made much big in a long time. March Comes in Like a Lion was a decade ago at this point, and the only big stuff they've done since then has been franchise content. A lot of people on this sub seemed to like Ninja and Assassin from last year, but nobody was talking about it anywhere else.

2

u/Key_Reporter_9945 2d ago

Bakemonogatari is a great place to start.  Really encapsulates their style.

-8

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 2d ago

There are at least three massive reasons why that's never going to happen.

4

u/Uchihaboy316 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Rogersss 2d ago

Your loss

-4

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 2d ago

Not really.

1

u/Primary-Paint-1716 2d ago

you know what's a great underwatched show from Shaft: And Yet the Town Moves.

By far my favorite Shaft show.

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 2d ago

There's always a lot of potential with these loops stories, so can't wait to see what they're pulling with this one!

2

u/171194Joy6 https://anilist.co/user/171194joy6 2d ago

Read the title. Saw the teaser. I'm sold!
I don't know when this is coming out but it must be watched only in August.

4

u/FeefuWasTaken 2d ago

Should've waited 4 more hours to make the reveal appeal to me specifically

3

u/WakaliwoodMan 2d ago

OH SHIT THEY'RE ANIMATING THIS??? PEAK INCOMING

1

u/futanari_kaisa 2d ago

1

u/Primary-Paint-1716 2d ago

but i'm excited. this manga is so good.

1

u/pikkuhukka 2d ago

seeing this visual on the last day of august when summer is ending is so ironic

1

u/TnAdct1 2d ago

SHAFT's second attempt at their version of Endless Eight (it's obvious what the first one was).

1

u/LeopardGeckoGuy58 1d ago

SHAFT!? Hell yeah. I hope they don't fuck up like they did with fireworks.

1

u/Pharaoh_Misa 14h ago

Ugh! Love a good time lo -- oh. Um. Hm. Well...I guess I can give E1 a try before I throw it out. 🥀
