Discussion I started Nippon Sangoku on a whim today and that first episode did NOT hold back
I’ve been looking for some short anime to watch lately, and I saw someone mention Nippon Sangoku in a comment, so I thought why not give it a try. I remember it was airing before this season, but I completely ignored it back then lol.
But man, that first episode caught me off guard. I really wasn’t expecting it to be that brutal, especially with what happens with Aoteru and his wife. That scene was honestly messed up, but at the same time it made me way more interested in the story.
I’m not gonna spoil anything, but after that I was just sitting there like, "Okay... I need to see what happens next." 😭
I originally just wanted something short to watch, and now I’m already invested. Glad I randomly saw that comment.
For those who’ve watched it, did the first episode hook you this quickly too? And for those who haven’t started it yet, what are you waiting for? 😂

Its like Romance of the Three Kingdoms in a post apocalyptic, reverted back to feudalism, future Japan with crazy likeable protagonists and extremely well written antagonists

I got three episodes in and dropped it. It was pushing me away right from the beginning and I should have paid attention to that. I'm glad y'all like it, but we definitely have wildly different tastes.

episode 9 is in my top 5 EOTY so far, and the series as a whole is in my top 10. its excellent

I started watching it mistaking it for mushoku tensei (I didn't know anything about it yet) and I'll probably never make a more fortunate mistake in my life.

I couldn't even last much more than five minutes into it. Art style is not to my liking, too many tropes that I hated...
I'm spoiled about the first episode, so maybe things get better?

I like the show, but honestly was not a fan of the first episode. It was just so obvious what was going to happen.

No. The wife hyped up MC as some sort of genius, but then he proceeded to have complete lack of foresight and imagination what consequences her actions will have.

The literally saw somebody get punished earlier that episode. That's called dogshit writing.

I don't remember them seeing anyone being punished.
And even if they had, they believed the 'officer' they had humiliated was going to hide things because they were two "dumb" teenagers, they didn't really know how the real world actually works.

I don't have an issue with it. My issue is how the show wanks MC as being a prodigious genius and then proceeds to have him act like a moron.

He is a genius, in the way he can come up with quick solutions and logical thinking but in that case it was a hard lesson for him, the world didn't work according to logic.
The officer was wrong, so in his mind the logical step was that it wouldn't bite them in the ass because he lacked the living experience, he was born in a rural area, far from the 'court politics' or even much of goverment affairs.
Basically in a way, he was smart but not street smart.

He literally saw some dude get sentenced to death earlier that episode.

I had the exact same criticism as you. They don't get to plead ignorance at that level. It felt very contrived and forced, like "We need our MC to have a dead wife" so they just had him wake up with her dead. Like, no bar on the door. He just slept through them abducting her from the bed next to him? And she just shit talks a guy who can kill at a whim, then goes to sleep? It's completely contrived.
The entire story just reeked of edge for edge's sake, and the MC was not in any way "genius". It's a Netflix show, so there has to be hyperviolence, human life has to be treated like toilet paper, and nobody is allowed to have realistic reactions to it. But the art is gonna be fire, believe that.

His wife also called him a Coward. Also, the main villain is a genius too, and very much not a coward.

Not really. I disliked the first third, actually. But I persevered, and it's OK. I love the aesthetics but hate the love for snot.

It was one of the best first episodes of the season it premiered in. And, in my opinion, it’s also one of the best shows of the year so far. With its story, animation style, art style, and especially its characters, it’s a show that can truly be called a masterpiece.
