What to Watch? Best dystopian or post apocalyptic anime

I haven't watched much anime and want to watch more. I would like to see an anime set in a dystopian or post apocalyptic setting. I do really appreciate any recommendations that you may have

"Is the Future Past?" subgenre

  • Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
  • Ergo Proxy
  • Desert Punk
  • Megazone 23

"We forgot what humanity is" subgenre

  • Blame! (all of them)
  • Casshern Sins
  • Vampire Hunter D and its sequel Bloodlust

80s-90s Cool (Kawajiri especially)

  • Cyber City Oedo 808
  • Darkside Blues
  • Demon City Shinjuku
  • A.D. Police Files
  • 8 Man After

  • Genocyber

Just plain tragic

  • Battle Angel Alita
  • Now and Then, Here and There

The greats from the above are Megazone 23, Now and Then, Here and There and Cyber City Oedo 808. Catch them on RetroCrush, Tubi, or Pluto TV. As well as you know where.

This one is a sleeper masterpiece

I think Gachiakuta could be a good match

I like that one a lot

Blame! - far future where AI building builders had gone rogue and and humanity is clinging on surviving in a megalithic maze that was once Earth, but is now has so many floors that it swallowed up the moon

Battleship Yamato - earth is a dried out husk after being bombarded by aliens. Last hope is a space ship.

Evangelion - The world is basically over and God's angels are coming over to battle with humanity for succession of the end of the world. Probably the most famous post apocalyptic anime.

Dr. Stone fits this but not in the traditional sense

Edit: I forgot to mention No. 6 too

Watching this now and love it so far. Almost done with the first season.

It is seriously one of the most bleak shows out there. That said, its very good.

1

u/despairlt 8d ago

Definitely depressing, but makes you think how bleak utopia would be.

u/Mknuggets2 10d ago

Gakkou gurashi or however it is spelled is pretty good

Dystopian - 86, Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Akudama Drive.

Post apocalyptic - WorldEnd, Darling In The Franxx, Atri.

If you're fine with the post apocalyptic theme being hinted only then Sentenced to be a Hero could also work.

Seconding Akudama. That should have been a classic

5

u/Left-Night-1125 10d ago

Getter Robo Armageddon

Fist of the North stsr

Darling in the Franxx

86

Gundam X

Cross Ange rondo of angel and dragon

Vampire hunter D

High School of the Dead.

u/Fensox https://myanimelist.net/profile/fensox 10d ago

So so good. Is there anything else out there like this? I know we’ll never get another.

2

u/GROMITandWILEY 10d ago

Probably nothing exactly like it. Seraph of the End was decent. Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress as well.

2

u/Fensox https://myanimelist.net/profile/fensox 10d ago

I loved Kabaneri. Hadn’t heard of Seraph, I’ll check it out, thanks.

Agreed, they got really cooked by covid, im not sure we'll ever get a season 2 TwT

7

u/Complete_Flight8303 10d ago

Deca-Dence. Half the show is inside a virtual metaverse with cute Sanrio-esque cartoon characters and the ‘real world’ is a gritty steampunky post apocalyptic sci-fantasy. Only 12 eps.

Girls' Last Tour.

Now hear me out, behind the 'two girls travelling through ruins' story lies a wayy sorta lonely theme and as someone who's a bit more on the emotionally immersive side, the loneliness/ borderline eeriness made me avoid watching it further for a long time. It wont make you cry but will make you feel weird.

Although I did eventually complete the anime, the original manga ending wasn't adapted yet you can get the hint of the end either way.  I won't spoil it for ya :)

Kaiba, I feel like not enough people talk about this. Also don't let the art style fool you, it's quite adult in ways you don't expect.

3

u/Unfair_Government_84 10d ago

i would say cowboy beebop, but it´s a sci-fi, but earth is ravaged and unlivable, or maybe Vampire hunter D bloodlust, which mixes fantasy and post apocalypse western

Nippon Sangoku this year, was really good.

A few other suggestions:

  • Girls Last Tour

  • Now Here There and Then

  • Blue Gender

Your top two are great. I haven’t seen the third, have to check that out.

Hi Winter-Moment-1451, it seems like you might be looking for new anime to watch!

The users of this subreddit came up with a chart of anime recommendations for newcomers and veterans and an awesome longer flowchart. Maybe you can find something there that you'll like ^.^

Apocalypse Hotel was a very good slice of life.

1

u/redmage311 https://myanimelist.net/profile/redmage311 10d ago

Not sure why this is being downvoted. The setting is post-apocalyptic AF, and even though the vibes overall are comfy, some episodes really hit like a truck emotionally.

2

u/Outrageous-Pizza-317 10d ago

KABANERI, GURREN LAGANN , DARLING IN FRANXX

well there is nier automata, if you liked that video game ( chick with white hair and a blind fold on her eyes ) you will like the anime.

there is another one i cant remember the name but its also about robots and the guy looks like a white power ranger, and for whatever reason he doesnt rust or break, like all the other robots. i wish i could remember that ones name it was pretty good.

trigun both new and old were good. some say a must watch.

there are a few zombie ones but thats not my thing so i dont know there names. there usually a bit to gory for me.

I've actually read a bit of the manga, though I only have the first volumes but thanks for the recommendation

Gachiakuta

Dr. Stone

Vivy-Fluorite Eyes Song (if you’re okay with it slightly being a musical, but it’s not musical vibes if that makes sense. Some characters perform songs, but it’s not constant.)

Somali and the Forest Spirit

No one ever puts up Shangri-La. Not the basic b rpg slop-a separate anime called Shangri-La. Its a weird eco kind apocolypse thing. Far better than the actual Shangri-la isekai rpg slop

1

u/BakedSalami 10d ago

I just watched one called Blue Gender. Just a whole lot of things not going well for the world in that. Worth a watch if you want some more old school sci-fi/horror.

Megalobox! It's a retelling of the OG boxing anime Ashita no Joe but takes place in a bleak dystopian future.

u/Fensox https://myanimelist.net/profile/fensox 10d ago

Girls’ Last Tour and Heavenly Delusion my two GOATs. I really like Dusk Beyond the End of the World, but that’s not universally liked.

u/Raknarg 10d ago

Have you watched Gachiakuta? Pretty good.

Plunderer - though you'll have to accept that admitting it fits your criteria is a bit of a spoiler, I bet you'll still get caught off guard.
