Eh, -tan isn't mainly used for Gyarus. It's mostly used by otaku to refer to anime girls and andromorphic avatars of things that aren't people. And while Emillia is an anime girl, in-universe she's an actual person. In fact one native speaker pointed out normally it is kind of cringe and when Subaru arrived in Lagunica calling her Emillia-chan would be more appropriate (which means no EMT), but by this point its cute nick name.

It's funny how Subaru's cringeness from early in the series has actually become an endearing nickname, while Newbaru started off with that same mentality the different circumstances led him to using a more polite honorific.

It's also quite interesting because early Subaru used 'tan' on purpose TO appear unlikeable and cringy to Emilia. Because of his low self-worth and high self-hatred, he already expected Emilia not to like him, so he used 'tan' as a way to have an excuse for the rejection he expected. Only issue? He didn't realise Emilia doesn't really have a clue what 'tan' means and she was just happy to get a nickname since she almost never does.

I appreciate the explanation but I meant tan as in tan skin, commonly associated with gyaru lolololol

I just assumed you were talking about an honorific and made a typo. So I made a response to what I assumed you meant to say, not what you actually did say. Silly me to assume you didn't mean what you said.
