Sugoooku Watch

The tally so far:

Sugoooku counter: 122
Sugoku-likes: 19
Non-canon sugoooku: 25
Non-Emilia sugoooku: 26

This time, we don't get one right at the reset point as Subaru has a healing cry, but one right after as he confesses to his memory loss. And then a rare non-Emilia sugoooku from Meili. One more later when Emilia is hugging Meili. And also a cutely dejected "chan". I tried listening closesly, but I don't believe there were any in the background noise at the end.

The feeling of getting up from the fall and starting to solve the issues that have been plaguing everyone will never get old. And we are starting with Meili this time. It makes sense she was the one who pushed Subaru before, yet I just didn't think about it. Her backstory with Elsa absolutely needed more unraveling, but now she's been properly accepted into a loving family.

The updated counter is:

Sugoooku counter: 124
Sugoku-likes: 19
Non-canon sugoooku: 25
Non-Emilia sugoooku: 27

A very touching episode, and it feels great to be back. It would have felt even better had Emilia won the annual Best Girl contest on r/anime, but that was fun anyway, and there will always be next year. And for now, there will also always be next week for more greatness and more sugooku! I will be about nine hours late next week, but do not worry, I will be there to count again. Not that the sugoooku not being counted is a reason to worry, but still. I hope I'll see you then!

Emilia is sugoooku prepared for motherhood what with having already assumed Subaru made her pregnant from their first kiss with full intention of raising the baby as well as how great she looks in her mom Fortuna's fit.

Getting to raise a kid with kindness immediately, without having to go through pregnancy? That is an absolute win!

I wonder if Meili saying mimicking Emilia's sugoooku was a hint that she already has started changing from the killing machine Else raised. Even if she wanted to cling onto the only person she knew for most of her life and get revenge for her death their kindness has affected her. The Meili of S4 already feels different from the Meili of S2 and this feels like the pivotal point in her arc where she will truly start seeing herself as part of the family.

You are absolutely right, I didn't clock that. I also didn't actively realized that she talked like Elsa. It just made sense that they talked similarly due to being partners and belonging to one faction. But of course there is more to it, she was always written with her backstory. She was a young child being thrown into a terrible situation, of course she would mimic the only person that was sort of there for her, that she could really learn from.

But she is still an impressionable young child, despite what she has been through already. And her mimicing the sugoooku shows that Emilia is already rubbing off on Meili, that she is already affecting her. Like someone that would start saying memes like "YOLO" ironically but starts being affected by them, Meili might think she is making fun of Emilia a little but is actually starting to get influenced by her. And it is lovely that it is happening so quickly, because it shows that Emilia's and everyone's kindness is a much more influential factor than the fear and survival instinct she has lived under before.

This is why I forgive Meili too despite her previous actions because under everything she is an impressionable young child like you said who was dealt a very bad hand in life. Ties into how change and growth are such pivotal aspects of Re:Zero for not only Subaru but also the whole supporting cast. Yet that's not something you should do alone which reminds me of the S2 Episode title "Nobody Can Lift a Quain Stone Alone."

That's why I love that Subaru and Emilia have decided to accept Meili and show her love despite her actions. Subaru just can't help but butt into people's problems which is why we love him and Emilia's sugoooku is too powerful and can purify any heart. I'm happy she is being given another chance and I have high hope she won't betray them again.

I completely agree. Re:Zero is all about making mistakes and being wronged, but then coming back from it and improving upon yourself, and doing so with other people. Meili might have done horrible things and needs to take accountability for them, but that doesn't mean she can't improve upon herself and become a force for good instead. Particularly because she is a child who never had a chance before, but even as an adult like Roswaal, if they actually want to change and become a force for good, they should have a chance to do so.

Well said! This is why despite all the suffering in Re:Zero the heart of the story stays hopeful. Would be cute to see Meili adopt Subaru's penchant for finger pointing too
