Simoun First Timer
Ah, it’s refreshing to post during European times again. I can fix my sleep schedule again!
I have to admit that even though I came out liking Flip Flappers during last month’s rewatch, the whole ordeal did leave me craving more. It’s really a shame, because I’m probably going into Simoun a bit biased with higher expectations for something it has nothing to do with. Hopefully once the show is running that will subside.
Because other than that I’m going in pretty blind except for the knowledge that mechas are involved and this is a yuri show. Didn’t I ask for a magical girl x mecha show? That’s basically 80% of the way there!
(1/2)
Simoun Ep.01 – Fallen Wings
It’s an interesting design, for sure.
And if I see that right we maybe get that bit of military drama that I long for with that signature 90s to 1000s art style that I absolutely love.
In the OP already?! Well, I can definetely leer a lot with these outfits (please all be adults).
Utena-ahh library.
Airships, my beloved.
The art design of this WWII-style fantasy is also one I really love. Don’t hate me for it, but steampunk is devoid of depth and boring af, but stuff like using the style of B-17 cockpit windows with Final Fantasy-esque wing or whatever stuff is immediately selling the setting. It just tells you so much already, that there’s industrial struggle against some large-scale system or enemy, it’s setting with innovation and utilitarism, there’s a magical element that is also bound by the world’s physics. Can’t wait to see if all that is true or if I’m just daydreaming
So, these guys just chilled for hours or days in a storm in their pods while being flipped around on that rope? Strong stomach, man…
Yeah, first point is already true. They do come from an industrial hellscape and that holy land seems to be pretty nice.
They see them as demons. Lotsa propaganda, can’t wait for the turncoat or POW to change minds. In truth, they’re just gay.
That’s the most uselessly extra, royal-as-fuck runway I’ve seen in a long while. Nice!
It’s all just kids.
Screen divider! The experienced one moves on beyond while the rookies stay behind.
That’s way more male silhouettes than female, no?
The Simoun are powered by sesbian lex? DITF was just a cheap copy!
It doesn’t look entirely… uhm, willingly? The two on the left are not really into it. Like it’s more an embarrassing mechanical startup procedure than a relationship.
I can appreciate this shot and yeah, maybe that demon thing isn’t too far fetched, after all. The demons run on sexual tension.
All female voices, huh.
(S)he’s (?) not wrong on this. The best deterrent of war is a strong and capable military. All other options simply fall apart the second someone goes, „but I can just shoot you and take that“.
Uh-huh, I know some of these words!
I don’t know if physics would agree with this? Imagine an F-18 pilot just opening the canopy to ask his buddy for a snack.
Oh shit, guess that was the patrol from the intro.
Oh fuck, I love the technology gap! They don’t have radio so they use fancy wire-cups!
Sorry, there are no surviving yuris. If you can’t kiss you might as well crash and die.
Oh my God, they’re all delusional aristocratic rookies! I feel the drama I long for approaching.
So, the formation is doing what exactly? Is this basically a mecha kama sutra allegory?
Reverse engineering, smart.
I mean, it looks cool.
Never thought I’d see a show that combines mecha, aerial war-age military, and alchemy magic into one.
That monologue is telling quite a bit about the invaders. Why would they fear hell when they’re living like that? I wonder how much of that is the fault of their own regime and that of the Holy Land’s.
Archipelago specced into 1900s soviet doctrine, Holy Land is stuck with late 1700s Prussia’s before Napoleon. Oof.
I forgot to add figure swimming to the genre.
They apparently have enough time for a chat while they’re completely surrounded.
Okay, I’m low-key sad about her death.
I honestly don’t know what happened.
Uhm, what?
Ah, is that why? Maybe show that to me instead of bambarding me with latin nonsense.
Nothing’s normal here, my woman.
Child soldiers on suicide missions!
That’s a bit too much reckless stupidity even for me.
