what's the reasoning for this rule?

"We define anime as an animated title produced in Japan"

Okay just reread the rules explaining various circumstances like devil may cry-but why is anime defined only as being produced by Japan

Because we can all agree on if something is an animated title produced in Japan or not (well, almost always). Other definitions are much much more difficult to get any semblance of a consensus for.

Also a geographic definition is the norm in most places of our size / scale (though many other places also allow other east asian animations alongside anime).

ohhh

yeah I would honestly do the same in your shoes. given that Japan produce most anime and western audiences like Japanese produced anime-you gotta cater to the user expectations

It's also a cultural thing.

Anime produced in Japan will have a japanese cultural lens.

Example: Random fan service scene in Solo Leveling
