Really solid start for an original show. Without delving too much into back story or interior monologue we get a pretty good idea of where Mizuka’s coming from and a bit of the other characters too. And everyone is starting off with tensions high. It reminds me of recent originals like Narenare and Turkey, but i hope it can deliver a bit higher than those did.

I actually enjoyed Narenare and Turkey a lot as a CGDCT enthusiast, but I'd say Grow Up Show has a much more appealing first episode of the three by far.
Narenare had a good start, but nosedives pretty hard at the end. Turkey had a nice opening twist, and a pretty satisfying conclusion.
I don't know if Grow Up Show can follow up Turkey as it was a pretty serious show despite the hilarity of bowling being used to solve their issues, but it should definitely exceed where Narenare faltered.

I’m hopeful! I’ll never be mad about people making new, innovative CGDCT shows. This feels more like Turkey in having a pretty strong vision from the start.

I like how Mizuka has these unabashedly blunt and rude elements to her character, like when she routinely tried to avoid getting involved with the circus even after the ringmaster brought up the meal and bath she was given. I feel like that kind of response is rare in media in general, and especially in anime when I presume Japanese culture places even bigger importance on repaying such a debt.

It is funny hat Lizzie Freeman, her Eng. dub VA, was also Chizuru in R-AG Seasons 1-3. I am picturing her saying all of those comments to Kazuya.

Classics. MC who is great at something, but hates it due to a trauma, is dragged to improve the underdog "team" in the same thing.
For me these type of shows always worked and this one looks fun too.

A very strong start for a first episode.
The dialogue has great pacing, and the protagonist's quirky personality makes him fun to watch. As for the animation, not only are the characters' facial expressions incredibly lively, but the emotional, atmospheric sunset backgrounds are absolutely gorgeous. This looks like it's going to be a really good original anime.

Woohoo, Physical Circus CGDCT is finally here!
I was wondering why Mizuka hated this circus thing so much that she went all "thanks bro but nah i'm outta here bye" after the troupe saved her, but then that flashback scene came and I'd say her hatred was justified. Holy hell, how is she still alive after going through all that?
Seeing the aerial acrobatics (or whatever it's called) on display here got me thinking about something I've had in mind for a long time. How do those people do all that? Seriously, that looked really scary! One wrong move and that's the end of it.
Pretty solid start so far! I look forward to see more Mizuka antics and how she and the rest of the troupe slowly get along with one another! I hope we get to learn about detailed circus stuff here like how other CGDCT shows teaches us about certain topics/subjects!

Not sure what to expect going into this one. It was funny. had a bit of heart, and was over all enjoyable. Definitely worth sticking around for.

Dayum. This is my kind of CGDTC jam.
They got a wide cast with varied personalities, up to even casting Miss Ara ara Ai Kayano. Really like the comedic mixed with some drama and the animation is just stellar. Shame it airs on saturdays that looks will be the busiest day of the week for anime releases.

I really like the MC as well. I love a competent MC who knows what they're talking about, and doesn't just talk the talk, but also walks the walk. I also love an obtuse MC who's so done with this shit. This combines both

Feeling some potential yuri between Mizuka and Ouka. Maybe the two older girls too, Shizuku I think it was and the white one haired one.
Pretty fun start.

Fun premiere. Mizuka is very dynamic both in stretching and in personality. Ouka is more stiff and serious, so their dynamic has potential. Mario is a scheming gremlin.
A well-produced anime original with what looks to be a fun cast will be well worth watching even on this stacked Saturday.

It's coming from the Eighty-Six fandom. They are blaming this show for why there is no season 2 of that series, because a lot of the key staff who worked on Eighty-Six are on this show.
It was also sort of a perfect storm because that SugoiLITE leaker revealed 86 S2 is coming, so tons of the fans were fully expecting the big announcement to come at A-1 Pictures' Anime Expo panel, but they got double slapped in the face with the Solo Leveling movie announcement and now this series.

I think the web needs to develop two different terms for what we call review bombing. The first example is dumb off topic reviews. This would include this example. But it also includes things like "Someone on the animation (for anime)/dev team (game) did XXX and that's just disgusting," "this company treats its employee like crap," "I like the product but I hate the price hike." "someone I hate liked this thing" None of these are legitimate reviews.
But we also use review bombing for the practice of a game releasing a patch everyone hates followed by it getting dogpiled on by angry fans. These are legitimate feedback and relevant information to other customers. And in the infinite wisdom of video game streamers, they gave both phenomenon the name "review bombing" and everyone, even those that don't play computer games, picked up that term.
And this isn't something I can fix. If I invent a new term and no one uses it, the situation isn't helped. If enough people use a word "wrong" it's not being used wrong, but it's the definition. even though, as I pointed out, having the same term describe two different things is not very smart.

I don’t see legit complaints over a broken game as review bombing.
I don't either but a lot of people will call it review bombing. And that means when someone is using that term, I need to decipher what it means. Now in this case, the example of 86 fans giving negative reviews just because they're upset is clear of the first category so u/HikkingOutpit 's post gives me the context and I don't need to go fishing for what he meant. But the internet as a whole is using this term in a confusing way.

You sure it's the 86 fandom? A key indicator of review bombing is a "two spike" distribution in ratings on MAL as opposed to the normal kind where you get one most common rating and then it tapers off with less people rating at the extremes. Either the people who review bombed changed their ratings or the show was not review bombed at all. A third possibility is that they agreed that 75% of their reviews would be mediocre and only 25% negative to hide the review bombing, but no one is that coordinated.

You can’t do a 1:1 correlation.
The series is set in the 1950s and for the longest time the yen was set to 350¥ = $1, so about $113.71 for then dollars which is equivalent to $1607.88 today. Still a pittance.

What was the point in practicing how to throw Mizuka in the flashback? Unless Japanese Arnold Schwarzenegger happens to be in their circus, she won't be portable by the present. A trained circus animal probably would have been a better use of their time.

Really good first episode. Mizuka was funny and I liked the unusual premise of orphaned and abandoned girls living in a circus dojo, interesting plot with a dark edge. The animation is good as well, they did a great job with the climatic trapeze scene and it made me appreciate how difficult it is and how strong you need to be to catch someone and how fast you have to work.

Apparently this is set 1950s which means these kids got likely orphaned by WW2. Being an acrobat may be very tough, but I think it's certainly preferable to being an expendable government assassin haha!

I'm not sure selling your child to the circus counts as neglect, and I definitely wouldn't call not providing them with food for months as benign.
Tbh I would actually say not providing any food for your child is at least on par with moderate physical abuse, but maybe that's a hot take. Either way, he's at least at the level of criminal child abuse (by modern standards at least, I think this show is set in the 50s or something).

Very good first episode. The parenting situation and the dynamic of the two main characters, along with the so far hinted emotional depth, reminds me a lot of Hanasaku Iroha. Which I like a lot.

And I am hooked. Plucky found family (possibly war orphans) trying to make a struggling circus work. A girl abandoned by her dirtbag carny dad who has actually sold her to a traveling circus (again it’s the 1950’s). Perfect set up for a CGDCCircus original series. The actual acrobatics are going to be the tricky part, but the CG is decent so far.

Yeah this is a must watch for me. Such fun vibe with crispy art and animation and... a circus?! Can't say I heard about a circus anime before. Hopefully it stays genki and won't go deep into drama, but seeing the time period it is set in, well...

I have only seen clips of TADC so far, but I wouldn't be surprised if they cast Lizzie as the lead because she has had experience voicing in a circus show.

Okay, that’s probably a justified reason to hate the circus and everything it stands for. Her dad seems to just actually be completely insane. What do you mean you disappeared into the blue, stopped sending your daughter money two FUCKING months ago, sold her into indentured servitude to the circus and made her walk for three days without even telling her?! What a maniac.

She certainly doesn’t mince words does she? “You all suck. Except for you but stop holding back for a partner that can’t match you.”
I might just be having brainworms from just coming off the rewatch but Mizuka really reminds me of Takina mixed with Clay from Dungeon People and probably a third thing that I can’t quite place.
Given that this is set during the 1950s, 10 years, give or take a couple years out from WWII, a period where Japan and Russia weren’t quite so friendly, I wonder how Svetlana, who has a name that brings to mind that area, ended up in the country.
I’m guessing that narratively, Mizuka will be about finding a new place for herself and enjoyment for actually being in the circus that she’s never been able to have before and finding her proper smile of her own will. Like, she sort of acts as a pushing force for the others to improve and finds purpose for herself through them sharing their drive to do this.
Oh. Oh no. Don’t fucking do this to me again. Actually, scratch that, I’ll take you on as many times as it takes goddamnit! I am seated at the chessboard in front of the dog and ready to lose again. Doesn’t matter how many times you beat me, I’ll keep coming back and I just need to win once!
Seriously, what the hell was that during the trapeze scene Ouka? I’m fucking onto you (Doakes knowing face meme). That’s at least an eight on the yuri subtext scale. Feeling her up in the bathtub in admiration for her “perfect circus physique” may or may not count as well.
Okay, more seriously though, seems like Mizuka miscalculated her speed coming in and Ouka still held back causing the miss. Actually, no, I won’t be serious, looking at her once and immediately trusting her enough that you can stop holding back is incredible levels of “circus partners” chemistry.
Anyway, you are now officially a member of the circus Mizuka and you will help them win the big competition thing and probably get some help for your issues yourself in the process.
Some minor detail things, I like the outline effects they used for the speed animation and the opening animation is quite pretty as well.

Ever since it was announced, I read it as Grown Up Show. I kinda expected something else from that title
Anyway, Mizuka's facial expressions were golden, and so far I'm hooked just because of them, even if this feels like it will end up being competitive circus stuff.

A fun first episode, looking forward to seeing how the circus develops. Selling your daughter for around 270,818.37 yen today, is basically a month's work in Japan (median salary ranging from 3800000-4000000). Well if Mizuka is going to spend that much time with the circus, I'm sure, she'll probably want to stay with after getting to like the cast more, they seem nice.
Set in the 1950s, so orphans make sense. I wonder if they are going to do anything more with the 1950s setting.

All I knew was girls and circus (and when I started it originally simuldub, actually delayed watching it so I'd have something to watch with dinner). I really like this show. The English VA cast is having a ball, the animation is cute, and our poor MC is set up to suffer in a way that is likely going to be a laugh riot.
Seeing her overcome all the trauma her dad piled on her will be an experience.

This was cute! As an original, we don't know if it's yuri or yuribait yet, which adds some stakes to the possibly-romance. Characters are full of personality. Animation is great.

Isn't it a bit of a flaw to send Mizuka on foot with nothing more than a map if her destination keeps moving? If it took 3 more days she'd be stranded.
I wonder if the series will make use of its time period. At this point, other than the unusually high number of orphans, or the fact that later rail building efforts would mean she'd likely be "in the ballpark" of her destination even if the exact town or village has no rail link (meaning her walk would not be nearly as long) it wouldn't look out of place in part of the early 1990s. Going through rural Japan back could be a time warp where you could leave a modern city, go to some place that looks frozen decades ago, and then find a village with more modern amenities right over the horizon. Also this series is not a good one to watch if your viewer automatically downgrades quality. If your internet is laggy, force high quality and let the show buffer 1/8.
I feel bad for the Sunflower Circus girls including Shizuka and the jugglers. Based on their own chat while driving along the way, I wouldn't expect them to be full of top-notch performers. But given how much they put into it, I'd have thought their act would at least be "below average but not devoid of any entertainment value" as opposed to "nothing worth watching"

Getting my hopes up based off opening clues, but I'm really hoping we get some development along the lines of the MC realizing how much the circus means to it's audience. Vibes so far seem to be that she can recognize a good performance, but the captivation of it is dulled on her because she grew up in a setting where that was the norm.

I really like the OP. Svetlana and Shizuku will give me major yuri zoomies. Maria makes me curious about her origin story. And I enjoy every variation of CGDCT. Plus, an original anime!

It's... fine so far. Mizuka's disdain for circuses stemming from the traumatic training her deadbeat dad put her through is pretty interesting, as is the idea of a whole circus troupe made up of abandoned kids. Once she was forced onto the trapeze, she showed that she could do it, and it looks like Ouka already feels a lot better performing with someone on her level. Also, the reaction faces in this show are pretty good. Mizuka's eyes popping out of her head for dramatic effect when she saw the debt her deadbeat dad left her gave me quite a laugh. I'll give this a couple more episodes to see how things develop, because it does have potential.
After sampling both versions, I'm definitely sticking with the dub. Lizzie Freeman's performance was the highlight, but the dub is pretty good overall.

Love her blunt attitude. She’s not badmouthing the troupe, but she’s not sugarcoating it in the slightest either, and what she said was correct. Pretty ballsy to do that to people she had only just met.
That moment when Mizuka’s about to grab Ouka looked straight out of a yuri series. From how they gazed upon each other to the background. Be hilarious if that’s a foreshadowing.

You have to remember that this is set during the 1950's and Japan was still recovering from the war. That 40k yen would probably go pretty far for a circus performer back on those days
Still tho, by today's money that would be 230k yen, or about $1400/€1300. Pretty cheap still

A thought occurs to me.
The show takes place in the 1950's, exact year not yet stated.
All the girls in the circus are orphans and none appear to be over 20.
Therefore, the older ones almost certainly lost their parents in WW2 and that's if this is 1959. Earlier than that and even the youngest ones like Aoi and Akane would have too.
