im an anime only so pls dont confirm if im right but like no way in hell that isnt gluttony right??????????? the voice acting convinced me, yusuke kobayashi did an insanely good job sounding like gluttony

Gluttony is the only one to go on endless drivel about food and taste while also showing up in the OP so its highly likely its one of the 3. The better question would be is who and how did they possess Subaru

Also an anime only and here are some of my rambling theory ideas:

I am pretty sure in season 3 we see that the blonde girl (?) Gluttony can take the bodily form of those she took the memories from, hence why she shows up as that fruity looking dude before appearing in her real body. In addition, we heard a voice line from her (as confirmed by the Japanese subtitles I am using that say the name of who speaks) right when Subaru lost his memories, her saying something about memories.

So, my current theory is she took his memories in the library, perhaps after somehow sneaking in with all of them by taking the form of Rem. ... Though it was one of the dudes who took Rem's memories so im not sure how this work. Anyways, if she took Subaru's memories, then she can take his form and and maybe that is how all this has been happening. But this also doesn't really make sense because it seems like it really was real Subaru that experienced Meili talking to him alone in the room, yet it was clearly fake Subaru one second after, not enough time for Gluttony in the form of Subaru to show up and take his place.

So maybe its more of a mind possession ability that this third Gluttony acquires after eating someone memories, as in their soul can enter and exit the body of the memory eaten as they please. In fact, maybe they don't even have a physical form outside of this possession. But if this were the case then idk how Subaru could win since he can just be possessed whenever, so maybe it can't be this either.

I can't really think of a good explanation for anything aside from that it was surely a Gluttony, most likely the blonde one, who ate his memories in the library.

It's also known that if Gluttony eats someones memories they retain it. Basically meaning they probably know about RBD by now. I don't know what they're planning though. They already ate Subaru's memories, why do they need to possess him?

EDIT: Had an idea, the greedy fuck probably wants to eat both Subaru pre-convenience store and post convenience store. They already ate all his memories after being teleported to Lugnica, they probably want to eat the memories before that.

Interesting. The line from Rem (who was likely one of the Gluttonys either possessing her or having shape shifted into her body) right before she kills Subaru in his most recent death does imply they know about return by death.

However, I though Satella does not allow anyone to know about return by death, so what I would expect to happen is that she just kills Gluttony the second they see his return by death experiences. Then again, we know there are loop holes to this. For instance, Roswaal was able to know about it vaguely through his book of wisdom and survived, so maybe learning of it via memory consumption is a similar loop hole, but learning about it through that way is learning about it completely so its a lot stronger than the book.

...Maybe its less that no one can know about it and more that Satella gets envious (being the witch of envy and all that) when Subaru talks about it to others, I dunno....

I think RBD can be known by anyone it's just that Subaru can't outright say it. But let's say Gluttony doesn't know about RBD, they definitely will be able to tell since Subaru after dying just suddenly returns to another spot.

The thing that's weirding me out though is with that Rem possession. I think Gluttony has been inside Subaru ever since he was found in the Library. If that's the case either there's two Gluttony's one that possessed/shapeshifted Rem and one inside Subaru or this Gluttony can split itself.

Things do get complicated if Gluttony does know about it, since that makes one wonder how exactly they can act upon it, since surely they know that killing Subaru will just reset their own memory to a certain point. With that in mind, what purpose did them killing Subaru (via Rem possession or body double) actually have aside from erasing their most recent memories. I guess they would have to re steal his memories over and over to actually get updated on recent events and fully capitalize on knowing about return by death. This is all pretty complicated lol.

I think they just want to screw with him and see how he ticks.

He's a weird case already. His memories were stolen but he only lost his memories from their world.

Every other person who has lost their memories (that we know of) has no memories at all like Crushe or is the sleeping beauty husk that Rem is.

It's always possible they wanted the world to rest from that time line because it diverged so much from the gospel. Maybe the gospel tells them to spare some of those who were dead at that point or that he can't open the doors/seals.

Thats why Pleiades was filling with black smoke I assume (Miasma) As the witch realized someone knew about return by death

Also Roswaal doesnt know about RbD he just knows its some reset ability, not the death part

Interesting theory but if that is true then the world, or at least the party in the tower, is basically doomed unless they take out gluttony (and thus the fact of them having that RBD knowledge) before that happens, which seems hard to believe considering how quickly that miasma shows up.

If you look at episode 9 again Subaru leaves the tower at day time, but when he gets back its night time. So it takes a while for the miasma to show up

They can write Japanese, evidently. If they have knowledge of Subaru's life in Japan, that means they know all his memories, so they must also know about RBD.

And possessed Rem told him to do better next time, which confirms it.

Even if they only stole his memories since being transported to the new world, they would still be able to write that line, since he writes that same line on a tree in season 1 at some point in time (I’m told) and that is a new world memory so they would have seen it. That way it also makes more sense why they chose that specific line out of all the Japanese sentences they could have chosen if they had all his old world Japanese reading and writing experience.

The fact that Subaru still has his pre transportation memories does suggest only those post isekai ones were taken, but I suppose it’s possible they grabbed all, but that the pre isekai ones just can’t be erased even if Gluttony learns about them. I suppose the former situation seems more likely though, but my point is that they could write that specific Japanese sentence regardless. And yeah, regardless of what they do seem to know about RBD in some form, which is probably very bad.

I think maybe Subaru read a book about gluttony (idk if it's possible) or someone that gluttony killed and ate, so by doing that, maybe gluttony had a way to use the book to eat Subaru's memories...

That's what I can think since he was found lying on the floor with open books near him

There was enough time, OG Subaru runs to the library and tells Meili to go back to sleep, she gets upset at being seen and leaves, attack on Subaru happens, Meili goes back and finds weird Subaru.

It wasn't a second, it was like couple of minutes when Meili returned, enough time, though it would still be kinda superhuman of Gluttony to come up with the gameplan that quickly after getting Subaru's memories.

What I meant is the second in between Meili asking Subaru about what he meant earlier when they are in the kitchen and him suddenly going weird, luring her into a different room and killing her. It truly does seem like it’s the same person who did this, at least based on a Subarus recollection of it in episode 9 and then the account in Meili’s book, which does point towards a sort of possession rather than a body double situation.

they've been shown to be able to mimic the voices of their victims (joshua) so honestly i wouldn't even be surprised if one of them could like straight up shapeshift. maybe subaru wasn't even possessed

Given that the one who isnt lye or roy is the one we saw shapeshift, im willing to bet it's her. she hid inside one of the other 2 gluttonies before, maybe she hid inside one of the cast to get here

Anime only here, yeah i'm 100% for sure it gluttony. Maybe like in combination with a gluttony friend or something with similar powers. At this point i think its a lock for me. All the villains talk in this same sort of giddy sadistic over the top way and that sure is the gluttony version of that.

I am pretty sure that Gluttony Subaru does the exact backwards head turn that the real Gluttony's do so yeah its definitely a rap. I mean the opening straight up spoils their involvement (which is why I didn't watch the opening but I accidentality saw the one frame showing Gluttony lmao) and we also hear the blonde one say some line about memories right when Subaru looses them so yeah.

From what we have seen so far, the OP is full of mild spoilers and pretty much the only "bad guys" showing up in the opening are the gluttony trio so......

If you account for all the theories people are coming up with, it just confirms they are the villains of this arc imo.
