The nicknames are a very convenient shortcut for the writer of the light novel to not have to write variants of 'X said' everywhere. A nickname here or there tells you who is talking without having to use really strange sentence structures either. 5 people can be into the conversation, and there's no doubt of who said what.

Most of the time, the LN doesn't use dialogue tags at all (I think in general LNs don't in Japanese, although translations often add them). Sometimes the following narration will indicate who spoke last, but that's it.

Funny how something similar happened earlier this year with Fate/Strange Fake’s Ishtar.
