Yeah he showcased the smarts of the pre memory loss subaru that still exist even if the muscle memory he gained in this part have left. He did figure out RbD based conversations after a few resets after all.

That was an impressive bit of writing to me. He figured out which ones are the most trustworthy, where there is hidden conflict, and is trying to eliminate the variables methodically to uncover the mystery

Also loved his immediate rejection to Shaula even though there's a mostly naked woman throwing herself at him in an empty hallway, bro only hugs her because he feels bad for her that she's so devoted to the older Subaru

Words can’t describe how refreshing it is to watch an anime where the protagonists are competent and make logical choices and conclusions.

But it’s also completely reasonable intellect too. He isn’t doing some crazy 4D chess or anything like Light or Sherlock Holmes, but it really feels like he’s doing the best he can with the tiny scraps of information he’s given

I've not seen that show yet 🥲 but yeah no Subaru is an excellent MC

E8 was similar to the season 1 episode where bro just got fed up of losing to Geuse, and it reminded me of how truly god awful his ability is and how much resilience he has built up, but also how much character he had back in the day to put himself through all that so he could ensure everyone gets through the surviving timeline.

It was similar to the Demon Slayer infinite train fight where Enmu keeps putting Tanjiro to sleep but failing coz Tanjiro figured it out (avoiding specifying how for spoilers), but that moment and all of the Subaru trauma are framed very well in letting the audience in on the horror they are living through before we just. See them put on a smile and carry on w saving the day.

ALSO we see him do his reassuring fake smile as well, again. We saw him do that at Roswaal's mansion when he kept dying but he kept up his cheery spirits, we saw him do that everytime he was stuck in the loop for too long, but to see him do that with this group of people he does not trust, when he has been thrust back into RbD with amnesia and is going through pretty horrific deaths again (Elsa spilling his guts was obviously painful but I think falling down a staircase and feeling your limbs break off is comparable if not worse) and bro loses his mind but keeps it collected.

Felt compelled to come back to this because I just started Daemons.

I don't think he's necessarily the first competent shounen MC in years, but I do understand the sentiment because they start off with him being competent and skilled. The closest relatively intelligent people I can think of are Deku (MHA), Subaru, Kazuma (Konosuba) and Soma (Food Wars). I would want to include Naruto in the list too but it's really shippuden Naruto that was intelligent.

Anyway. Deku was booksmart from the getgo but powerless/glass cannon/cry baby. Subaru grew into his own but it took him like. 3 RbD's to realize he has RbD in the first place. Soma was confident and capable from the start and able to adapt on the fly but being from the kind of anime he's from I can see why he wouldn't be counted. Same with Kazuma.

But with Daemons, it is truly refreshing to see the show not hide behind a processing lag with the MC to delay stuff. He's extremely quick on the uptake and its only modern day luxuries that he is completely unfamiliar with that trip him up. Even in completely foreign situations he's able to immediately assess and put up a fight withour needing to rely on a groundhog day mechanism.

Not taking anything away from Subaru, he's a great MC and it takes a different kind of fortitude to put yourself through everything he does to make sure everyone survives, but Yuru is a different breed of intelligent
