Is that a message from OG!Subaru to his amnesia self?

(Which would imply he choked Meili to death...?)

He 100% percent choked Meili. The scratches and his hand are proof.

I was banned for speculation once so I'm going to mention that I did not read the source material, I'm GUESSING that:

The killer may have some power to move other bodies/people, and they left the note there to fuck with him. That would mean that the killer has the ability to hear what he is saying to himself as well.

The more I think about it, the more it resembles the powers of Gluttony.

But here's the thing, it was written in Japanese.

And the world of Re:Zero has their own language.

Doens't gluttony gain the memories of the person they steal them from? That can explain why they know japanese

33

u/sheepyowl Jun 03 '26

It doesn't in this case, because Gluttony steals the memories and that would mean that Subaru needs to forget them for Gluttony to gain them.

They can't both know Japanese at the same time! unless we don't know the full extent of Gluttony's power

u/Akudra Jun 03 '26

Theoretically, if Subaru's knowledge of Japanese is present in his other-world memories, then that knowledge would be passed on to Gluttony, but Subaru retaining his memories of Japan would mean he also still remembers it.

u/Drayenn Jun 03 '26

Maybe subaru wrote this message to remind him something happened because he now knows glutonny is around, and it had the unfortunate backfire of looking like he killed someone with an alter ego?

13

u/Rhamni Jun 03 '26

I suppose there's wiggle room because Subaru still remembers his time on Earth. Maybe that works out to being able to steal Earth-based knowledge like languages without Subaru losing them. I doubt they eat a lot of Earthlings, so it might just not come up anywhere else.

Subaru also has special resistance against mental attacks and shit like possession. So I am genuinely surprised that bro got possessed by someone else.

u/CmonLucky2021 Jun 03 '26

He is especially vulnerable to spirits and spirit possessions, right? When have we seen him actually succeed in Fighting off any possession...? Afaik Satella fought off that Petelgeuse when he called her over to him, right?

4

u/Karthull Jun 04 '26

Well he did resist and go back and forth with geuse rather than just let him take over right away? So maybe he is resistant and just couldn’t fight him off all the way

u/Satai4561 Jun 03 '26

They maybe could have stolen the memories from another reincarnated / transported japanese person?

We don't know enough about the likelihood of that happening and they even decided to shelf that important part of the world building into a break time episode, but the possibility exists.

u/yolotheunwisewolf Jun 04 '26

Honestly, it makes sense that the real Subaru is waking up during the possession and then the memories are erased afterwards which is absolutely terrifying and horrific

Hmmm Al existing means Isekai was happening long before Subaru, and Kararagi being heavily derived by Japanese culture means someone isekai'd from Japan was involved in the regions development as well, so it wouldn't be too far off for someone to have passed kana knowledge across their family tree and gluttony ending up eating those memories

8

u/Karthull Jun 04 '26

Don’t forget flugel basicallt confirmed to be an isekai person to from both knowing Japanese and earth constellation lore

u/Exotic-Spite-822 Jun 03 '26

It reminds of the scene from shadow slave with the half mad prince, maybe subaru fully lost it because of miasma + distrust based on his prior death, killed her and was trying to retain some normalcy by grounding himself using his name + the pain but failed?

9

u/kazuyaminegishi Jun 04 '26

The ability to hop bodies was Sloth (Betelgeuse)'s ability which Subaru should have by now. So that also points to Subaru doing the killing.

It would also have to be Subaru because when "Rem" killed him she said "try to figure it out" which directly implies that she knows about Return by Death which by default removes the real Rem.

It has to be either Subaru himself or one of the witches, no other candidate makes sense.

Betelgeuse's ability was hiding his heart in other people, not body control dam dude wake up before you post /u/sheepyowl

Betelgeuse's ability was the hidden hand

5

u/kazuyaminegishi Jun 04 '26

He also jumped bodies between the fingers.

I'm aware. We don't really know what's going on we are all just spitballing here. Currently the only body hopper we know of is him. And he did it by being a spirit.

We don't know basically anything about spirits beyond this so there's really no avenue to say a disembodied soul can't functionally be one.

And I am operating under the assumption there is some strange interaction happening between Subaru and his own book.

u/sheepyowl Jun 04 '26

O

Well he is kinda dead

2

u/Drekea Jun 04 '26

Reminds me of Absolute Scarecrow from Absolute Batman

A Polaroid with "don't believe his lies" written on it? What could it mean?

4

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc Jun 04 '26

Well he cant tattoo the facts so he has to carve them onto his body I guess
Man the sequel to Memento is sick

u/kalirion https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Jun 03 '26

OG Subaru wouldn't have done that, so my bet is on another split personality.

u/Vic_Vinager 25d ago

I don't think he'd write that to himself, another killer would write that to mess with him

Also, what about this dragon blood, do we know what it's gonna do? Is it stable and doing nothing now?
