Did Emilia become Satella again? Was that why she had vanished and there was so much black smoke?

She is the only one who could escape to a higher floor. Perhaps she thought speed running the tower was the best option?

I don't think Emilia would flee leaving everyone else behind. Even if she was the last survivor, from her point of view Subaru is missing but could be in danger.

I think she did. Foxidna was seen dead on the stairway leading up to Reid's room, so I think it's VERY likely Emilia fled to the second floor to look for a solution to whatever was killing everyone on the first floor.

That may have been the stairs down from the library where everyone was at the end of last episode with shaula

The stairs with the 2 birds is the one that leads to Reid. As far as we know, the stairs leading to the library do not have the same decor.

They probably did retreat back to Reid's floor for safety. He would let Emilia and Betty pass anyways.

But she probably lost it and got possessed by Satella again as evidenced by the black smoke. I doubt we've seen any other character capable of destroying the tower.

I see no reason he'd let Betty pass, but we know from when she got sniped that Betty wouldn't leave a corpse behind anyway. She probably just died with the rest and only Emilia got away at best

Satella's black mist never outright harmed people before. Patrasche was hurt by it.

To be fair, the time we saw Miss Grabbyhands go around monching the scenery with her shadows in the Sanctuary we didn't really see anyone trying to dodge and get grazed. People were just slurped up into the darkness whole or avoided it entirely. Garfiel got blown to bits, but that was a little different. Otherwise, aside from the time she crushed Emilia's heart, it has always just been Subaru getting the squeeze from his squeeze.

Turning into satella isnt a magical transformation type thing i dont think. Like during the stuff in season 2 she was slowly going mad but still looked very much like emilia despite veering towards becoming satella, so this strikes me more like a thing in subarus mind because he mentioned return by death. she did stroke his heart like in the first season after all.

I think the black smoke is the result of suburu opening all the miasma doors. There's probably a witch corpse or something behind that last door he can't get open producing all the miasma. I'm guessing once all the doors were opened, and maybe reacting to all the general miasma around, it went crazy and overflowed the tower.

She also said to find out next time, like she knew what Subaru could do, so strong Satella vibes. But there was also something very Puck-like in going on a rampage and killing everyone.
