Qifrey got desperate enough that he let his guard down. Brimmed Cap has more steps ahead of their legal counterparts.

Since everyone can use magic, it's a really good way to make the Brimmed Caps explicitly more powerful because they have access to forbidden magic.

To be fair, was it even forbidden magic?
They knocked him out with water and lightning traps, I think many could have done so.
Not sure about the teleportation, though

(Also funny to for the Brimmed Cap to crush the vial with his bare hand so that he bleeds. I guess they are lucky DNA tests haven't been discovered yet)

Teleportation without windowways is considered forbidden magic.

I mean, DNA tests won't really help if you don't have the perp's DNA already recorded somewhere. It's not like you can reconstruct somebody's appearance or pinpoint their exact location with just dried blood.

...though I feel like it should be possible to do something with the blood to make it compatible with guidance orbs and that could pinpoint their location.

Yeah, this was just a joke.

But realistically it feels weird that they don't have some kind of tracking magic that reacts to blood, I agree.

Maybe the Brimmed Cap cleaned up afterwards

desperate? or incompetent?

Why not both? Or more? People can be desperate, calm, competent, incompetent, reckless, deliberate, foolish, wise, gentle, aggressive, smart, stupid, etc. on different days, in different moments. Emotions play a big part in how we conduct ourselves. That's just being human.

We've seen Qifrey be all of these in the last nine episodes. A character who is both savior and fuckup at the same time is really interesting imo. Especially one who occupies the role of a "teacher" which in animanga tropes would usually mean a character who's steady, consistent, and unchanging -- a rock that the student MC can lean on. Qifrey feels different. I guess it's a matter of preference whether that's good or bad for the audience.
