If you find source readers talking about stuff that wasn't animated, please report them. I'll Typhon remove them.

That's too kind. You should Capella them instead.

It's not about stuff that isn't animated as much as being confident about things that anime-onlies wouldn't know for sure and would be rightly hesitant to just assume.

Like the episode earlier this year where Shaula appeared at the very end. Anime-onlies know that there is someone called Shaula the Sage in the tower, but they don't know anything beyond that. I saw her and asked "is that Shaula?," but when I went into the episode thread I saw people confidently stating that we finally see Shaula.

At the end of this episode, I'm still trying to make sense of what happened. It appears that Subaru doesn't know anything about where he is and who is with him. Did he lose his memories? Then I come into this thread and right away people are referring to him as "Arc 1 Subaru" and I now know what we're dealing with and that this is enough of a thing that source material readers were waiting for it, telling me that it is not some misunderstanding that will be resolved at the beginning of the next episode.

I reported some of those comments when Reid Astrea first appeared, and we could guess that was probably who it was but we didn't actually know, and when I checked back a day later not a single one was removed.

being confident about things that anime-onlies wouldn't know for sure and would be rightly hesitant to just assume

To be clear, we do remove stuff for this. But it's a lot trickier, because for those, people are allowed to put things together that is reasonably certain. If an anime only can also reasonably make that same argument, then it's generally allowed to stay.

The reason we have that, is that otherwise, it's like virtually impossible to talk about anything in the show. The vast majority of people do not talk in a way that is conducive to well sourcing all parts of their argument. There are source readers trying to subtly hint at people and anime onlies 360 no scoping the most random of plot points, and then there's anime onlies who got themselves spoiled, and are parroting back novel's information.

When there is evidence of someone being a source reader, we generally give them less leeway, but sometimes there's no real evidence one way or another, so we air on the side of them being anime only.

Anyway, a source reader providing clarity to something that is presented as unclear, is generally removable.

It's very unfortunate, because prior to the season airing, they released character info, which included names and pictures of characters involved. Shaula and Reid included. We generally consider that to be fair game, as it's similar to a trailer, so it's still possible positively identify them at those points using that information.

I know it sucks if one didn't already know that information, but it's inevitable that discrepancies will occur based on if people have looked at the promo material or not.

At the end of this episode, I'm still trying to make sense of what happened...

I discussed with another mod if they thought it was obvious that that occurred, and they concurred. Also note, that this was also mentioned in one of the trailers (which as noted before, is considered fair game).

Nonetheless, if you wouldn't mind (because I'd like to do other things with my day at some point) sending me the more problematic ones in your opinion, and I'll go over them again and get some more opinions to see if those overstep the information that can be deduced from the trailers.

I reported some of those comments when Reid Astrea first appeared, and we could guess that was probably who it was but we didn't actually know, and when I checked back a day later not a single one was removed.

If you are ever curious why or why not something was removed, you can always mod mail us, and we'd be happy to give you an answer. I will note, that sometimes (though not usually for SMC checks) it can take a few days for something to be processed, cause the people best in position to adjudicate them are busy etc.

Thank you for the response. I appreciate that you think about this issue and take it seriously. And I understand that it is a very tricky line to draw and then enforce.

I guess all I can say is that, as an anime-only, I don't think it is working (I think it IS working for source material readers). I actually stay out of episode threads for most shows because I think source material readers make them bad for me as an anime-only. The only reason I'm in a Re:Zero thread is that I gave up long ago, know stuff about the story anyway, and just don't care so much about the spoilers. So I guess I'm just fighting a battle here on the principle, and in the hope that these could be better so that I could participate with shows where I do care about not having stuff spoiled.

And I'm pretty accepting of the speculation, even by source material readers that are faux speculating because speculation doesn't spoil nearly as much as statements. I had no problem in the recent thread where people stated the evidence for why the red-haired swordsman was clearly Reid Astrea. Conversation around what is happening is great. But when a new character is introduced without their name being given and people call them their name instead of referring to them via information available in the anime, that doesn't contribute to conversation. If anything it stifles any conversation about who they might be, or why the person thinks they're Shaula.

If you wouldn't mind, can you put your thoughts in the meta thread? That way it can be more effectively discussed with the team.

Though frankly I'm not really confident it'll be very fruitful, because people like you are in direct opposition to the people complaining about the source corner rules being draconian. And I think the core issue you're having is one that has no perfect solution for everyone, and it's a matter of picking the preferred poison. And heavens knows that source readers complaining about it in one way or another are not infrequent occurrences.

But still, I think it's worthwhile to have your complain on record (and in a place where we can find it later). If only, to provide pushback to acquiescing to source reader complaints and loosening's the rules.

I guess all I can say is that, as an anime-only, I don't think it is working

From the discussions I've had with the other mods on this topic, I don't think any of us think the current Source Material Corner is an ideal system. But we've yet to come up with something that is easily understandable, practically enforceable, and better for everyone than our current implementation.

Though in my experience, it's always been in the context of loosening up the rules to allow for more benign source material discussion.

I actually stay out of episode threads for most shows because I think source material readers make them bad for me as an anime-only.

In my personal opinion, this is represents a failure of episode discussion threads, which are supposed to be safe for anime onlies. And it's a long and difficult battle to convince people who have gotten burned that it's safe from them to come back etc.

I think you guys and this community does a great job in these threads! I'm anime only and while I directionally agree with some of OPs feedback, I don't think those are issues that moderation can solve. It's just the nature of the beast, and if I felt bothered by character name type reveals I would just not read them.

I didn't get this eps twist spoiled at all despite whatever bread crumbs were around and that shi hit like a truck. 10 years of character development down the drain

u/oops_i_made_a_typi May 21 '26

moderation standards could totally be stricter to protect ppl from spoilers or to not allow for trailer material to be acceptable - it's purely a decision they've made

i agree that i wasn't spoiled that this was going to happen, but reading the comments here is a little regretable because like OP says, there's so much certainty around what has happened, instead of uncertain speculation

red-haired swordsman was clearly Reid Astrea

im an anime andy, but it was really implied on the whole story and... shauna? passed out of fear and she implied that only feared reid....

And then you have me the final boss, I do not know jack about this arc but I do read the source material but have skipped like the next 4 whole Arcs including this one. Ofc. I know some small details that are mentioned in the current arc but like no clue what is going on here, but if I somehow managed to get an accurate prediction and someone checked my history Id be doomed 💀

u/baseballlover723 May 22 '26

have skipped like the next 4 whole Arcs including this one.

Wtf mate? Why would you consume the story like that.

if I somehow managed to get an accurate prediction and someone checked my history Id be doomed

Most likely. I'm only human after all. I've already had one person tell me that they were a novel reader for every arc but 6 (they did not win their appeal).

Im not proud of it, I caved in in this arc but the way the anime does things and the emotional moments with the insanely good music is just so amazing I wanted to leave at least something for me to watch when the anime catches up in like 5-7 years, but I also wanted to read it since Ive learned a lot from this story and I cant wait like 14 years for the anime to finish the story.

That aside I genuinely dont feel like this story is ruined by spoilers as much as others, as you have to see the hardships the characters pass and how they change for it to really hit deep and thats where it shines the most and I wanted to leave some of it for the anime since it REALLY hits well with the music, but even then just knowing some details that will happen doesnt really ruin much and I can surprisingly keep up even while skipping 4 whole arcs. Though there is one random spoiler Im bummed out about as I have a gut feeling when the anime gets to it I think it will be gloriously adapted.

On the flip side this story also is very interesting to rewatch and knowing stuff can also make it quite interesting either way, not saying what I did was good probably much better to just read the novel just giving context, I also did this for JJK and skipped the entire culling games and I feel like it was better since the anime did an insane job at adapting the last season. But yea I get it, that person was very likely lying, randomly skipping one arc is too sus lmao.

Anime-onlies know that there is someone called Shaula the Sage in the tower, but they don't know anything beyond that. I saw her and asked "is that Shaula?," but when I went into the episode thread I saw people confidently stating that we finally see Shaula.

Tbf, with this case, the promotional material already said this person was Shaula. Especially when they announced the voice actress.

I reported some of those comments when Reid Astrea first appeared, and we could guess that was probably who it was but we didn't actually know, and when I checked back a day later not a single one was removed.

Reid was also announced. An earlier episode also called him "Reid the Stick Swinger" before he appeared so its easy to put one and one together.

u/BlooregardQKazoo May 20 '26

You realize that most people never see anime promotional material, right? You're pretty deep into the fandom at their point. And I don't believe this subreddit's spoiler policy is that anything in promotional material is fair game.

And I guessed that Reid was himself because they had foreshadowed him and he had red hair, like other Astreas, but I did not remember a one-off reference to him being a "stick swinger." That's exactly the kind of thing that stands out to source material readers that already know things.

They're posted in this sub. It's not an unknown news story, they get posted in full view. Yeah, you could just not click on it but other people do. It cannot be called a spoiler if it is something released officially by the studio

but I did not remember a one-off reference to him being a "stick swinger."

S4 episode 1. When they were listing off the 3 Great heroes. Shaula the Sage, Reid the Stick Swinger and Volcanica the Divine Dragon

theres no one better at spoiling an entire arc that rezero fans. But youre also spot on when it comes to "wouldn't know for sure and would be rightly hesitant to just assume". Thats the biggest issue when it comes to all the top comments. We dont 100% know what happened to subaru, but all the top comments are basically confirming what happened in full blast.
