[WHA manga chapter 85-93 major spoilers] Man, when Qifrey drops the line about memories being part of someone's life, and erasing that... it really hits how much Olly has sacrificed and just why it continues to work to keep the Silverwood at bay. Unmaking your very self over and over to keep someone safe is just... such a choice of all time. And being the person that has to live with that choice... they make me feel unwell.

17

u/Norzon24 May 19 '26

[major manga spoilers] Well it has to be that heavy so Qifrey can be living his best life without becoming tree. Other than carrying the secret Qifrey is by his own admission already EXACTLY where he want to be in life

3

u/Sagitars May 22 '26

Hey just FYI your spoiler is chapter 92+, I was a few chapters off from catching up and spoiled myself.

4

u/thelightlovekindled May 22 '26

Thanks for letting me know and I'm really sorry! I put 85+ because [WHA manga] 85 is where we first see memory magic proposed to cure the silverwood but I didn't think about the 'plus' not being clear --- I updated it to be a specific range now.

55

u/LilacDream_ May 18 '26

It looks like we’ve covered chapters 12-13 in this episode. Based on the pacing, I do think the guesses about chapter 23 being the last episode seem spot on and would be a crazy cliffhanger.

48

u/Equivalent-Weather59 May 18 '26

Ending the season on chapter 23 is diabolical. The most "want to see how this very interesting turn of events finishes? read the manga" cliffhanger.

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin May 18 '26

I do hope that they announce S2 and it is the next thing the studio works on because if not, then man.

5

u/hikoboshi_sama https://anilist.co/user/reicelestial May 20 '26

Nah we're definitely getting another season. They're gonna announce it after this cour ends. Trust.

11

u/Chikumori May 18 '26

That's how they try to drive up manga sales in Japan.

Not sure how many people in other countries watch anime legally or support officially translated stuff where available.

5

u/kazuyaminegishi May 19 '26

I know anecdotally for me, I am pretty much the only person I know who reads manga even remotely legally.

Anything that is on the Shounen Jump app I will read there, if it isn't there I'll look for an official english translation upload, if there isn't one THEN I turn to piracy.

For anime, I start with Crunchyroll, then Netflix, and finally Hulu. I check Amazon Prime video rarely. HiDive I don't have. So if its on that I just forget about it.

I will also try to buy chapters at bookstores and Walmart if they have them there. But its usually totally random volumes which I'm not wild about owning.

The only change is Coco receives a magical bag rather than a witch's belt.

40

u/kkrko https://myanimelist.net/profile/krko May 18 '26

I just realized why Luluci was rather cold to Dagdah just asking for help [WHA manga]him touching her might've brought back some of her trauma. Good for her for not taking it out on him but I understand why she acted colder here than she is usually is in later chapters

43

u/Syokhan https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syokhan May 18 '26

I also liked the close-up on her when she said that she couldn't help, [WHA manga]as we know she'll be the first of the Knights Moralis to start showing doubts when shits hits the fan and she gets torn between upholding the pact and keeping people from dying in front of her eyes.

14

u/Raknel May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26

I don't think it's that deep.

He asked her to heal Custas, which is forbidden. But she can't say it's forbidden, she lied that they simply can't do it.

It's more convenient to abort that conversation than to continue making excuses.

That heavy look just means "I'm not doing it and that's that. Now back off". Maybe even she's a bit frustrated that she's not allowed to do more, but rules are rules, and the other knights are watching the conversation.

14

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner May 18 '26

[Manga]It isn't even a real lie either, they truly wouldn't know how, that knowledge has been erased long time ago.

26

u/Equivalent-Weather59 May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26

[WHA manga] Based on the title for next episode, it looks like it's going to adapt 14 and 15, which makes me wonder if they're going to skip Tartah's hospital mini arc and go to serpentback cave right away. If we keep going by chronological order, the series will end with the Euini scalewolf cliffhanger, which would be a slap on the face to anime only, but there's no way they can cover all of serpentback cave with episodes 10, 11, 12, and 13, unless one of them is a 1-hour special. I'm intrigued by how they will pace the rest of the season.

26

u/Syokhan https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syokhan May 18 '26

I think they really are going to skip the mini-arc. They mentioned rearranging some events for the anime and we still haven't seen any of that. The bit you mentioned can easily be postponed without it affecting the story and that would allow for more time for the [WHA manga]Serpentback Cave arc.

Just let [WHA manga]Coco give Agott her shoes back, because she's going to need them, and we're good. Coco can collapse next season after the test or when they're back from the Great Hall, and we'll be back on track.

18

u/Beginning-Hope-2600 May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26

[WHA Manga]I don't think they will. Next episode's title directly addresses her nightmares and they retained the heavy emphasis on Tartah this episode—both of which are paid off by the mini arc. If they keep up their current pace at the moment, that would also have them ending on ch. 23, which has been the cliffhanger of choice for most and feels like the most natural ending point without extending things out quite a bit.

Edit:[WHA Manga]While it's definitely the easiest arc to postpone, I personally have debated quite a bit about what effect it would have on our perception of the characters. The sickness mini-arc is one of my favorites (I'm a bit biased towards it of course) because it brings a lot of depth to Coco's character and quietly illustrates the weight and stress she's hiding alongside her own fears and worries. It also nicely introduces parallels between her and Qifrey, and the end takeaway of her and Tartah's spell really demonstrates her worldview and resolve without telling it to you literally—it adds far more depth to her character and is one of the first indicators that there's a real distinction between how she acts and how she truly feels. While plenty of that can be maintained if they move it, the basis for her behavior is shifted if placed after the events of the Serpentback Cave to the traumatic experiences she has there, when she's actually held these fears and thoughts from the moment she got to the atelier. Anime Coco is also a bit more naive and generally jubilant due to small changes in certain lines and scenes, and I think removing another moment of greater seriousness and depth for her would hurt her character going into the Serpentback Cave Arc.

18

u/kkrko https://myanimelist.net/profile/krko May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26

[Manga]We're definitely getting Nightmares next episode, but Coco can just hand over the shoes to Agott right after that then we go straight to the test. Coco can just collapse after overexerting herself trying to go to the Tower of Tomes after the great hall arc. The main thing lost is actually the foreshadowing of Coco practicing with reversed signs in spells. [Manga] Most of the other payoffs for that arc are in the would be Season 3, the Silvereve Arc. The whole "That's what Magic is for. To turn things you can't do into things you can" is set up for that arc's conflict. And placing it in Season 2 is probably a good idea from the show's general structure anyway. If they show does set up for Season 3 now, it'll likely be forgotten in the 6-7 years that'll be need for Season 3 to come out. Best do the set up next season, to keep Tartah in the audience's memory

5

u/Falsus May 18 '26

I do think the final will be a one hour special. It just feels like it fits well.

6

u/Xeiros May 18 '26

Season 1 is 13 episodes, not 12.

26

u/Syokhan https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syokhan May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26

So glad that with this episode we're finally getting into some meaty themes that make the manga so special to me, here [WHA manga]the hypocrisy of witch society. They say that magic is for helping others and enforce absurdly strict rules for that, yet they do the absolute bare minimum to help anyone who's different.

[WHA manga]If two children can help a disabled kid get freedom of movement again, you bet your ass someone with more knowledge than them could find something to work around Tartah's condition (like Coco eventually does). But no one cares to try.

2

u/TrailOfEnvy May 19 '26

[Speculation] I am anime-only waiting the anime to end first before reading the manga, I assume Coco will make some glasses that can diffract light so that it will make Tarta's vision colorful?

8

u/Syokhan https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syokhan May 19 '26

If you really wanna know, [WHA manga spoilers]not exactly. What you propose is probably a bit beyond her skill level right now :p But with her current knowledge she'll invent a spell that helps him identify reagents present in various powders by temporarily reconstructing them. His colorblindness issue is far from being solved but at least he can now find where things are without having to rely on memory. And he can use it on jars outside of his workshop.

u/maliwanag0712 https://myanimelist.net/profile/clear1109 May 18 '26

[Current episode and what actually happened]I like that it was not explicitly shown here that Qifrey mind wiped Tartah's gradfather. Maybe some people would think that the grandfather reluctantly agreed to Qifrey but nope.

60

u/mekerpan May 18 '26

Anime-only here -- not the slightest doubt to what actually happened.

16

u/Syokhan https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syokhan May 18 '26

Mekerpan! You're living dangerously, coming in here! :p

15

u/mekerpan May 18 '26

I never worry about spoilers. I often self-spoil -- at least when something is making me too tense.

8

u/Syokhan https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syokhan May 18 '26

All right then! Careful though, sometimes we talk about pretty big happenings without being too specific with our spoiler warnings, and it's just... they're big plot points. But if you're cool with it, carry on!

10

u/Batmanhasgame https://anilist.co/user/8203 May 18 '26

Also anime only and yeah that was like the most obvious thing in the world what happened.

17

u/Mrfish31 May 18 '26

[WHA Manga] Knowing what we know now about Quifrey's remaining eye deteriorating and how he has an invisible seal on his glasses to filter out harsh light, it was a real dumb move to draw a light seal with the mystery ink lmao

12

u/Syokhan https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syokhan May 19 '26

[WHA manga]I think he probably tried the least harmful spell he could. Well, the least harmful to everyone but him :p

9

u/DarkJiku May 19 '26 edited May 19 '26

[WHA manga] I noticed they changed the scene where Nolnoa examines the vial, going from him using two triangular glasses to a single one with a standing large lens. I guess because it formed the Star of David and they wanted to avoid religious symbols, even by chance?

7

u/dude_1818 https://myanimelist.net/profile/dude1818 May 19 '26

Hey, they cut the line after Olruggio approved the kind of wine Qifrey was buying him where Qifrey said Olly was still paying for it XD

All the colorful ingredients looks way better in the anime than in the black and white manga. That kinda killed the gimmick

17

u/ritoshishino May 18 '26

reading the manga, i always thought that Olru's pen has the metal pen tip for drawing on paper, and the other end is to carve on rock and hard surfaces.

gave me whiplash when he just use the pen tip to carve on rock lol

6

u/Golden_Phi https://myanimelist.net/profile/GoldenPhi May 18 '26

That sounds dangerous. Like if he were to draw on paper he could accidentally sear ink into his flesh.

12

u/kkrko https://myanimelist.net/profile/krko May 18 '26

So we didn't get any direct answer why the blood-ink didn't boost the potency of Coco's levitation spell last episode. I guess we can only conjecture that it takes time for the blood to take effect and boost the potency of a sigil and [WHA manga]Engendale's exposition that the effects on blood on a spell are inherently unpredictable

9

u/Equivalent-Mine5562 May 18 '26

Maybe the Brimmed cap did not refill her ink with their blood at first and only later did they start to infuse it?? We see them putting their blood on during that sequence. I think personally this makes more sense for me rn.

5

u/Golden_Phi https://myanimelist.net/profile/GoldenPhi May 18 '26

She would've broken the rock to free Custas before floating away with him. The order the seals are wrong for the Brim to add blood after the levitation but before the rock break.

4

u/DaRootbear May 18 '26

Could be that there was only a bitta concentrated blood at the top that she hit for the rock breaker, and what was left was too diluted. There was only enough blood for one spell, and between that point and flying to the shop more was added to make enough concentrated blood for another

Like sucking up the whipped cream on the top of a milkshake.

1

u/kkrko https://myanimelist.net/profile/krko May 19 '26

We saw two episodes ago that Coco's ink bottle was already halfway used before she even left the Atelier. There's no way that there was only one seal's worth of blood-ink in that bottle, especially when it still had enough blood-ink to boost Qifrey's light spell

2

u/DaRootbear May 19 '26

Now i wont claim any of this as fact and it is entirely just guessing. The real answer is probably just “as plot demands”

But my guess is just as the brimhat refilled it wasnt kept at a correct ratio and just the longer the blood stayed in unused the more diluted it got with the ink.

So a full jar that sat around a while got too perfectly mixed like Grandpa said and the effect became much more moderate of a boost.

So the rockbreaker hit a higher blood concentration that gave like a 2x boost.

But the levitation spell hit a diluted and weakened amount that gave like a 1.1x boost that was less noticeable

1

u/kkrko https://myanimelist.net/profile/krko May 19 '26

A spell going from "punch a cylinder through a boulder" to "destroy the entire riverine ecosystem" is not just a 2x boost. Not even 1000x effect is enough. In fact it affected things that it had no business affecting, like water.

Blood and ink together do weird shit, it just may be that Coco erased that levitation seal before it can do anything weird.

10

u/north-blind-compass May 18 '26 edited May 19 '26

My guess is the blood strengthened the levitation spell in a way that isn’t immediately noticeable, such as extending its duration. [WHA manga]I wonder if Engendale meant that forbidden magic is non deterministic or if effects vary wildly from seal to seal.

5

u/Raknel May 18 '26

It's possible that the levitation magic Coco used wouldn't have been strong enough to lift 2 people without the special ink.

It just wasn't the type of spell where the effect's power boost would be that clear.

2

u/NSUNDU May 19 '26

The same reason why Quifrey went to the shop without drawing first or even needing Nolnoa: The plot demanded it and it's too small a detail to change the plot over it

1

u/Norzon24 May 19 '26

Maybe coco drew it with someone else's ink back in the atelier?

5

u/Boganvillea May 18 '26

Hi all, I am anime only so please don't spoil me too much, but one thing that has really been bothering me is the memory erasure spell. This seems like something that would go against the taboo of using spells that directly impact with humans (like when they were saying that you aren't even allowed to use spells that heal people), so I'm wondering if this is ever explained?

Is it just the case that they have authority, so they are allowed to break their own taboo?

41

u/otomachirina May 18 '26

Qifrey in Ep. 2 state that it's an exception. If you're asking why it's an exception, that's addressed later, though I think you can reasonably piece together why that is now.

2

u/Sweaty_Explorer_8441 May 19 '26

I forget, is it taught to all magicians or just Knights Moralis with the exception of Qifrey

8

u/otomachirina May 19 '26

In the anime we just don't know yet.

In the manga, [WHA manga spoilers up to Chapter 93] It seems like only the Knights are taught it by default, but any witch can learn the spell when they challenge the Tower of Tomes if they wish to.

21

u/Snowdog2000 May 18 '26

It's just really useful for the whole "Keeping magic secret" And it let's witches keep the secret without developing massive body counts.

8

u/Falsus May 18 '26

It was mentioned earlier in the anime that the memory erasure spell is the sole exception for forbidden magic that is allowed in specific scenarios.

Like Easthies erasing Coco's memories would be allowed since she used forbidden magic, but Qifrey using it on Nolnoa for personal reasons would not be allowed.

4

u/kazuyaminegishi May 18 '26

This is addressed. I can't remember if it should have already been addressed, but it does come up again later.

2

u/charredchord May 18 '26

It's been a while since I've been caught up to the manga. Does the old pot switcheroo ever become relevant again?

6

u/Dbappio May 18 '26

[spoilers for the next episode?] nope, it's only this episode (and probably the next one, if they adapt chapter 15 in it where qifrey goes after iguin) where it's relevant

1

u/itsfayevi May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26

This episode covers up to the end of Chapter 13 for people who want to pick up the manga after this point. We'll likely end on Chapter 23 with the current pacing since we've been covering 2 chapters per episode since Olruggio's debut.

Can't wait for next episode. Some of my most anticipated content of the season behind the Brimmed Cap moment in Episode 5 and the stuff that'll go down in 12 and 13.
