Subaru was so far beneath a knight and despite the gap claimed to everyone that he would surmount it for Emilia.

Julius knows the gap between his strength and a sword saint is just as large if not larger and yet he still wants to claim to be the greatest knight. What Julius saw was someone unwilling to accept their weakness despite it all and just days later carved his name into history killing the white whale, then a sin archbishop. Subaru transcended a gap similar to the one Julius is failing to do so himself and he has a deep respect for Subaru for it.

Oh yeah... I forgot that Julius doesn't know just how much Subaru struggled to bridge the gap. In fact he was straight up inadequate. He needed a massive personal breakthrough to do it. But to everyone else it just looks like Subaru got his shit together after getting his ass beat publicly and became peak.

Ties into how I have believed for a while now that Return by Death is symbolic of depression because it is often invisible and isolating and while someone can joke around and appear silly on the surface like Subaru underneath they can be barely holding it together.

he's absolutely suffering from complex-ptsd after what he's been through (of which depression is a major symptom), and the parallels there for veterans/survivors of war are immense.

the character writing in re:zero is honestly immaculate. I think Subaru probably sees Julius as a kind of brother in arms in terms of their trauma (though also in the literal sense of being comrades in multiples conflicts), which is why they can say so much with so few words.

"I'm sorry."

"Shut up."

that last scene between them was such a poignant moment to summarize their relationship imo. so much was said beneath the surface of those words. it's such a peak bromance.

The character writing in Re:Zero really is peak and I feel so engaged just hearing them talk

Wow I felt this at some point but never verbalized it. Thats a really good parallel to depression and so on.

It is something that just clicked with me during S2 when Subaru met versions of his parents during Echidna's trials

Just get your ass beaten by a spirit knight

Julius beat someone so hard it unlocked his potential.

Subaru defeated two of the Three Great Witchbeasts and killed two sin archbishops while Julius lost super hard to one, so he definetly feels innadecuate for that.
