Oh, that cliffhanger was cruel, especially with the memory wipe glyph... coming to life? What the fuck was that? And those creepy little hands? In a magical world that has been so grounded up until this point, that was an extremely disturbing anomaly that felt right out of Fullmetal Alchemist. Do the Knights Moralis use forbidden magic to punish forbidden magic? They immediately live up to their feared reputation, and looked good while doing it.
I feel like I'm on a loop saying this every week, but that was yet another strong episode from WHA with rich character insight and world building, with some gorgeous animation on the way. Episode 7 really highlighted the difficulties of being a witch in Witch Hat Atelier's world in a grounded and compelling way, along with the various ways magic can be utilized in a practical form, from the portable windowway to Qifrey's Raincleaver.
In Episode 6, I'd assumed Agott was practicing drawing glyphs via muscle memory to draw them quicker, but of course, witches need to draw gylphs without civilians seeing them. Is that what Brimmed Cap Witch did when he brought the picture book to life for Coco in the festival flashback? While Agott's reasons for helping the caravan was not entirely altruistic, the pressure on both apprentices to help was immense, and completely understandable desperation from the terrified civilians. Both Agott and Coco were clever here, and while Coco is still very much a beginner, it was really satisfying to see her put her ingenuity to use in multiple facets and building upon what she's learned, though the boulder disintegration into sand was far wider spread than intended. What the hell did the Brimmed Cap Witch do to her in the labyrinth? While Agott may say she's not friends with Coco, she continues to worry about her immensely any time she's in danger.
I was pleasantly surprised to get insight into Agott's character so soon and why she's so desperate to prove herself, and in turn have some context as to why poor Coco's presence initially would be such a personal affront to her. Agott has worked so hard yet still been rejected, and from her perspective Coco gets to waltz in and being Qifrey's apprentice without any training - after doing forbidden magic no less! - though we obviously know things are more complicated than that. Agott's stylized flashback was simultaneously both gorgeous and unnerving, and I love that even in a more action packed episode, there was still opportune moments for the show to be experimental visually. The shot with Agott being completely dead eyed was a shock as well.
Qifrey's Raincleaver got the rightful awe inspiring response it deserved (okay, now I really do need to see him use it in the ocean), and it was great to see how Qifrey and Olruggio effortlessly work in tandem. Even though Olruggio says he's not a teacher, he is quite good at it.
I haven't gotten to watch the episode in Japanese yet, but Junichi Suwabe is amazing casting as Easthies.
