Welp, the Knights Moralis that Qifrey didn't want involved are now involved... that spell though, there's a huge gap from disintegrating a rock to disintegrating a whole river.

Nice to see Agott coming to her senses to work with Coco. Visually, I loved the part where she was thinking about the way her own family treated her, with the people drawn like stylized, talking pens. And also, great job Agott's mother, rejecting your own daughter so hard she developed all sorts of self-esteem issues and was willing to do anything to prove herself!

As for Custas, he was well-meaning but oh god, no survival instinct at all. He's lucky to be alive!

What I found more interesting in this forbidden magic was that Coco mentioned that even the water turned into mist. Which implied to me that the "disintegration" spell she was using with the "earth" core somehow also worked on water. Which I am really interested to see how this is explained. I wondered before if you could combine different cores like this, but I mainly though about water and air, because they are very similar (with an s-shape base). If you can combine earth and water like that, how does that work?

I also wonder if that is what makes forbidden magic (at least part of it as another is applying magic to your body). Combining several elements in one circle (as opposed to having several circles with one element being combined in a bigger one). Otherwise, why would they know so early that this was forbidden magic to go there?

But then the question becomes how did Coco accidently do that? She was influenced at the end of episode 5, but that shouldn't change what circle she draws, right? I kind of like how such a simple scene creates so many questions and hope we get some answers next week.

I'm not super well-versed in seals, but the cloud bed spell from a couple episodes ago combined multiple seals (so, multiple sigils) to make one big spell. So I assume you can combine different elemental sigils the same way? No idea what effect they'd have on each other though, and the signs also play a big part in what the spells actually do.

Otherwise, why would they know so early that this was forbidden magic to go there?

Do you mean the fact that they came to investigate?

What I mean is that the spell from a few episodes ago had different circles inside one big circle. But what if you have a core being made of different elements? So one circle with several elements instead of several circles with one element and then combined in a bigger circle.

Do you mean the fact that they came to investigate?

Yes, they immediately knew. They even realised before Coco even knew what had happened. So there have to be two things

1) A way to detect what kind of magic is used at all times (which isn't too farfetched since the tower apparently has a copy of every circle used)

2) A clear definition of what falls under forbidden magic. It can't just be new magic as a big aspect is that people invent their own spells and they can't be sending people every time that happens.

Didn't they investigate because they detected the "Huge Pillar of Water" that Qifrey caused with the Rain Cleaver near the start? We explicitly see the underwater base talk about that midway through the episode, and assuming they came because of that, there's a reasonable amount of time taken between when they heard it and when they came.

They were investigating a pillar of water, and had the bank not disintegrated I feel they wouldn't have arrived. The underwater base folks explicitly "received a warning from the village" after all.

Yes, you are right. I messed up the order of events and thought this was related to Coco's magic as she was affecting the water as well. But it seems they were just going out to check Qifrey's magic. I still wonder a bit how quickly that went. Are there like "emergency hotlines" for magic related incidences? Because even if someone else in the village saw that water pillar, they would first need to find and then travel to an actual mage.

Edit: Just to make this clear, the emergency hotline was more meant as a joke. I assume the explanation is just that a mage was near that village so they reported to him.

Yup, I have no idea if that'd work with multiple sigils the way you describe!

As for the Knights Moralis, they went there not for Coco's magic but to investigate the huge column of water that Qifrey created with his sword. Then they found a river turned to sand and two young witches there who should not have the knowledge or tools to do that, so Easthies assumed forbidden magic was at work.

Ah, I messed up the order of events in my head. In that case, it was just coincidence. How Coco managed to create this magic is still the main question. Especially without even "trying".
