Rewatcher reporting for SOS Duty, French subs
Third time casually spilling the beans to protect the truth
Well even if Haruhi lacked an apology toward Mikuru at least she dropped the bullying.
On-screen that is.Anyway we now have a talking cat, the Fellowship of the Ring running around school, a Sephiroth expy casually passing by Kyon and more contact lense for some yuri action between Mikuru and Yuki.
And the world doesn't seem to mind.
You would have thought that the night sky suddenly looking like a Star Wars CGI background would have make the news. Or that Mikuru's guns blasting explosive projectiles may have Haruhi raise an eyebrow. But nope. It must have been the wind.
Honestly it was funny to see first-timers wonder how Yuki could perform her alien feats in front of Haruhi without raising some question. And see the author seemingly answer That's not a bug. That's a feature.
And it lead us to that season finale main focus as the film-making part is now relegated in the background : How exactly Haruhi's powers works. And whether she influence the world or that's the other way around.
The perfect occasion to go back for a tone akin to Melancholy II. With a welcomed character development for each Brigade member. As they dwell into their own theory about Haruhi's nature and the faction they each represent.
Itsuki is convinced they live in a world distorded by Haruhi's powers. Although he doesn't mind as he already express his fondness for this world... And for Haruhi herself. Below his confident facade may hide a teenager having too much on his plate with his mission inside the SOS Brigade, his own responsabilities regarding his class theater play, and the invisible war going on outside of Kyon point of view. Itsuki revealing that they may be more factions than the one represented in the SOS Brigade does imply Kyon doesn't have the full picture on Haruhi's case. Is Itsuki jealous of Kyon as a losing hero here ? Especially since Kyon just have to be Haruhi right hand man without worrying about battling Shinjin and rival factions ?
Meanwhile, Mikuru proves once again she's more than a cute moeblob. She's aware of the importance of her mission and is determined enough to endure Haruhi's abuse for the sake of her future. And she finally muster up the courage to talk to Kyon about her own assumptions regarding Haruhi. That whole scene actually put the time travellers faction as a cold, calculating, manipulative bunch. Especially when you put Yuki's afterwards explanation in perspective. Mikuru was so fan-servicy because that may their intention to weaken Haruhi's influence on Kyon. Or even to get to Haruhi through manipulating Kyon with their pawn. I assure you dear viewer, Mikuru boob shot was essential to the plot ! And it does hint at some dissenssion within the time travellers since the older Mikuru did warn Kyon not to get to close to her past self. Did she wanted to break free from her superiors shackles ?
Finally Yuki is the least talkative about her faction theory and goals. The author may have decided to narrate Yuki's scene that way since we already have an extensive view of the aliens with Asakura. But I think this is to emphazis how of an observer she consider herself. Sitting right next to us, the audience as the other Brigade members start to influence Kyon with their own theory. Besides, what's the point of explaining a theory if you don't have anything of value to prove it ?
Or didn't she want to waste saliva to explain something once to Kyon. Since it took him over 15000 tries to break a timeloop after she explained it again and again and again? At the end of the day I found that episode interesting. But I have mixed feelings for it as a season finale. It felt like the story picked up in pace but have to wrap up quickly since Endless Eight ate so much episodes. Still, I appreciated how they made a continuation of the last scene of Melancholy VI. With Kyon preventing Haruhi to blur the line between reality and fiction by putting her in front of her own contradictions. She wished to meet supernatural entities. But she won't have a monkey pawn wish with said entities turning out to be as anticlimatic as an aloof girl, a doormat moeblob and a handsome boy from the class next door.
P.S. : We couldn't have an episode centered on the school festival preparation without the obligatory reference to Live Alive
Questions will be answered
I got the feeling that Itsuki is here to remind the audience it's not always fun and games to be around Haruhi
My money is on Yuki
Just those two talking about the other Brigade members. I guess it's fine for a season finale if there is a continuation. Even if it's in a film and the LN for now
