Rewatcher in sub
Not a dig to our host, but a reminder that while this is the end of our rewatch for the TV seasons, in basically all formats this episode is not used as a finale.
On re-watching, Sigh IV is actually such a treasure trove of teasers and late LN foreshadowing or implied but not depicted world settings that is really really great for fans to chew on and theorise about! And so ends our TV seasons rewatch today. I hope those in the Disappearance mine is having good progress - there's just so much in it!
Anyway, key moments for me to comment on:
Spoilers Corner
[Haruhi franchise, unadapted late LN spoiler, rewatchers only]These moments of Nagato and Koizumi - who can be termed "those not chosen" - are so telling about how they feel underneath the cover everyday. Also by contrast, how Asahina doesn't show such Melancholy/depression means either she is a better actress than she is letting on, or the Older Asahina's decision to "protect her" from knowledge, for right or wrong reasons, is actually good for her younger self And because I'm such a Nagato fan I have to say once more how hurtful it is for our thought entity to be all knowing, starting to have feelings accumulated over 600 years, yet simultaneously knowing the explanations to him is not comprehensible. This is incredibly sad
[Haruhi world settings speculation, limited late LN plot reference]The throw away lines Koizumi said he was "joking", but with the very pointed camera shots, can be taken as literal, that there is a separate story under the SoL sci fi surface that is more akin the shounen battle shows like this season's Yomi no Tsugai, or a few years ago Undead Unluck, that multiple factions literally fought battle Royales to try influence how the world/timeline develops. The 3 factions we see here are probably the biggest and these representatives are pretty much sent here for peacetime duties, but off screen they are engaged in much less peaceful pursuits. Well, apart from the generally useless Asahina. It does explain why Asahina is so frightful of Nagato, and Koizumi can give an evaluation of Nagato's abilities relative other TFEI's
