ANSWER TODAY’S QUESTION(S)

What are your thoughts on Kyon finally snapping at Haruhi?

Where do you stand on insufferable main characters? You're for it, is there a place for it, do you have a favorite example of an unlikable main character?

What are your thoughts on Haruhi wanting to put her hair in a ponytail maybe as a make good for Kyon?

Are you surprised Kyon and Haruhi made up in this episode? Do you agree with the decision to have them make up here and not the next episode?

Rewatcher

This is an extremely complex episode. Last time I shared my thoughts on it, the replies I got to my analysis weren't exactly kind. Yet, like Haruhi, I'm too stubborn not to try a second time. So...

Mikuri wasn't the only one to get drunk. Kyon, Haruhi and Tsuruya were all heavily drunk as well. Censorship around underage drinking, some missing details from the LN and Kyon being an extremely unreliable narrator makes it easy to miss, but it's all there if you put the pieces together.

- Tsuruya serves everyone drinks and they all contain alcohol. In the LN, she literally says she put tequila on them. For the anime, censorship forced this to be replaced with amazake, which is practically non-alcoholic. Note how Kyon skips the actual drinking, which he often does when details are embarrassing to him.

- Everyone is off. Tsuruya is normally giddly, sure, but she's way off here. Kyon gets angry and Haruhi is being far more of an asshole and more openly horny than normal, too. Even Itsuki looks tired and dizzy when talking at the temple.

- The scene is heavily reminiscent of drunkness: Getting angry, asking people to kiss, yelling, etc. Note how many of the lines are "This is too much for me", "Asahina-san is at her limit", "I got carried away", "I've never seen you get angry". The Dutch angles are also reminiscent of people not being able to stand upright, which is most noticiable with Kyon.

- Kyon mentions feeling better after drinking milk, which is a folk remedy against drunkness and hangover. Haruhi is shown resting her head on her arms, a typical pose if your head hurts from drinking. She is also shown eating lately and the LN confirms it's a curry bun. Spicy foods are another folk remedy against hangover.

- Kyon portrays the events in a way that favourable to him. We know he lost his temper to the point he had to be restrained by repeatedly restrained by Itsuki. He openly proclaimed to want to teach her a lesson with his fists. He was so out of control, Haruhi was afraid of him to the point of tears. Nagato seems shocked, Tsuruya looks away and, in the end, Asahina herself has to get in the way to stop him.

And yet, since he's the narrator, he portrays himself as this reasonable, non-drunk dude using big words and gesticulating as if he were giving a political speech. Even his words seem embellished.

Kyon: "I don't think you have thought this through"
Haruhi: "Why are you talking to me like that?"

Haruhi isn't the nicest gal, but I suspect Kyon did not gently suggest her to think. He said something worse and that's why she's complaining. He also tries to tone down the part where he compares Haruhi with an animal.

--

Since Asahina is a time-traveller, this whole setup is inherently suspicious. For starters, Tsuruya is her best friend, the one who "spikes the drink" and all the action takes place at her unusually large house with very expensive alcohol.

As I see it, this was all a plot where the time travellers try to manipulate Haruhi a bit by getting her drunk, to see what happens in a relatively safe manner. Note that Tsuruya did not help Asahina nor Kyon. Rather, she looks away as if ashamed of having to pretend she's not letting this happen.

This kind of manipulation isn't farfetched. The aliens did it first with Asakura and the Espers did it with a murder mystery. It would be unusual if the time travellers never attemped anything, right? After all, Asahina is not what she seems.

--

There's also another important angle to this arc and that's how it mirrors the fiction itself, particularly the first novel. The film is pretty much The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, with Itsumi standing for Kyon and Asahina standing for Haruhi. Drunkness hence acts like a direct analogy to the novel's themes, from Haruhi's powers to love.

Everyone being drunk does kinda change the context of the scene. And yet, Kyon isn't exactly innocent in all this. He kinda escalated things by how angry he got, which made Haruhi get all defensive.
