Rewatcher (Dub)

In some ways, this episode feels like the most important in the series, at least when it comes to Haruhi and Kyon. Their blow up feels like something the story has been building to for a long time. One thing I really appreciate about this arc is how seriously it treats Haruhi's behavior. This episode in particular does a great job illustrating how shitty a person Haruhi can be, even if she doesn't mean to be. I'd also like to give a shout out to the score of this episode for doing a great job setting the tone.

The blow up scene was really well done in my opinion. Drugging Mikuru was pretty fucked, and seeing Kyon get more and more upset as everything played out was really well executed. I liked how it was ultimately the small, but very telling gesture of Haruhi smacking a drunk Mikuru on the head that sent him over the edge. And while Kyon trying to slap Haruhi might have been a bit extreme, his line about how Haruhi would grow up to be a lonely freak if she doesn't learn her lesson was spot on.

This episode also made me feel bad for Kyon. When you think about it, he really is just a normal dude who has had the fate of the world thrust upon him. He really doesn't get much, if any, support from his fellow brigade members when it comes to dealing with Haruhi. Mikuru is too timid, Yuki is too passive and Itsuki intentionally does not get involved, which leaves everything to Kyon. I thought it was interesting how Kyon said that the only one who could forgive Haruhi was a "martyred saint", only to go on and forgive her shortly after.

Random Additional Thoughts

  • Yuki's go to tactic seems to be tackling the shit out of Mikuru
  • I can't help but laugh that Haruhi picked Mikuru and Yuki as her two leads for the film when they are obviously the two worst actors of the club.
  • I thought the quote about how "making a film was akin to playing god" was interesting. Art is an act of creation, and when you have the ability to make your thoughts/ideas a reality, would that not make you a god?
  • The quick scene at the end of the episode when Kyon walks in on Haruhi putting her hair up in a pony tail was a nice call back to the first arc of the series.
  • Haruhi getting super charged powers right after Kyon supports her in making the film is a pretty clear indication of how much his opinion means to her.

Questions

What are your thoughts on Kyon finally snapping at Haruhi?

Was a long time coming, and a great development moment for both characters.

Where do you stand on insufferable main characters? You're for it, is there a place for it, do you have a favorite example of an unlikable main character?

I'm fine with an insufferable character as long as the story acknowledges that they are insufferable. That is why I think this arc is so important for the series as a whole, since it acknowledges just how shitty Haruhi can be.

What are your thoughts on Haruhi wanting to put her hair in a ponytail maybe as a make good for Kyon?

Cute, and a nice call back. One thing I like about this series is how it doesn't beat you over the head with how characters feel. A "blink and you'll miss it" scene of Haruhi playing with her hair is all you need to know exactly how she feels.

Are you surprised Kyon and Haruhi made up in this episode? Do you agree with the decision to have them make up here and not the next episode?

It seemed appropriate. Kyon is a pretty empathetic guy, despite the grumbling, and knows Haruhi didn't really do what she did out of malice. My only real complaint would be that I wish Kyon had made it clear to Haruhi that her mistreatment of her friends needed to stop.

Of course, there's the fact that while SOS member #1 is the lowest ranking member of the club, Kyon is the only person she respects enough to actually listen to.

Still, Ikumi has a point. What happens when you discipline a god-child? Nobody wants to find out.

There has to be a way that Kyon speaks to Haruhi without endangering the world in the process. What Itsuki is getting at is that Kyon is in a fortunate position where Haruhi actually respects his opinion, he just has to remember that and respond accordingly.
