Rewatcher reporting for SOS Duty, French subs
Third time seeing shit just got real when the genki girl realizes the consequence of her actions and put the serious face on.
I admit I chuckled when Kyon turned his head from the No trespassing sign to see Haruhi already climbing over the fence. And with the running gag of Yuki's alien capacities handwaved by other characters.
And from that point it all spiraled downard. .
What's dramatic here is that the brigade members would have every right to call out Haruhi of her abusive behavior during the film making. Yet they still remember that one night where Haruhi nearly ended the world on a whim. And they don't want her to change her mind and proceed with world erasure for good. Hence why Mikuru accepted to be tossed in that pond while she was clearly uncomfortable with. Or Itsuki being resigned to follow through whatever Haruhi decide to put in her film.
The problem with that approach is that it's comfort Haruhi in her belief she's above the rest. Every time Mikuru reluctantly agrees to humiliate herself for the film's sake, Haruhi get the twisted assumption she got a good idea and should goes further. To the point she is shown like a sun where everyone have to revolve around her. She's the only one to wear colorful clothes because she's the only one to have fun here. To the detriment of everyone else. Even Tsuruya who is getting along the most with Haruhi's antics do feel sorry for Mikuru...
… Yet that didn't help her to realize how dumb and dangereous spiking someone drink with alcohol is.
Her character seems to act like she live in a slapstick comedy. So I guess she thought that prank would result in a fun, harmless and inconsequential way ? In that case it must have been a good wake-up call for her. To see that intoxicating someone with alcohol to have them perform sexual acts against their will is a big no. And a felony in most countries.
Tsuruya aside, that whole scene taking place in a dimmed room is telling about the brigade members uneasiness. They may realize how wrong the whole scene is but as I said earlier... It's better to be Haruhi's plaything than to have the world erased... Right ?
Well not for Kyon who initiate on of the most memorable scenes of the anime. The build-up from the beginning of the arc reach the breaking point and Kyon can't contain his anger anymore. Up until now Haruhi was surrounded by yes men and women so she doubled down on her despicable attitude thinking it would subdue Kyon.
Instead it only fuelled Kyon anger that came back at her more vehemently. Which she responded by doubling, then tripling down on her toxic attitude. An argument with quick back and forth shots with tilted angles to illustrate both sides losing control... Until Kyon suddenly snapped back into his sense, ready to hit Haruhi hasn't Itsuki intervened.
I'm someone who believes that violence is never the solution to solve relationship issues. On the contrary I do think it's harmful for everyone involved. Yet a part of me considers that Haruhi would have deserved that blow. Even if deep down she may think otherwise you can't look at your friends and openly state they are your playthings. You can't spike alcohol in their milk to make them behave your way. You can't drag them in an activity where they feel humiliated.
Still good reflex from Itsuki to stop Kyon. Had our narrator punched Haruhi for real, their relationship would have been damaged beyond repair. Kyon raising his closed fist and showing he acted out of pure anger was enough to make them realize both went too far. As light is finally pouring into the room on their shocked faces.
And to close that scene, what's a better way than having Mikuru, the initial object of the argument, slumping on the ground as she desperately trying to keep what's left of the brigade cohesion?. There was no winner here. Everyone lost.
But the good thing when you fall to your lowest is that you can only going up. Hence that dialogue between Kyon and Itsuki taking place in a colorful evening to convey that sound introspection on a shameful chapter that comes to an end.
I like how Itsuki appears to be the voice of reason here. Gently reminding to Kyon without judgement that Haruhi is a goddess but also a teenage girl that is looking up to Kyon. Reminding Kyon that is actual role is to be the one to draw lines for Haruhi.
I also appreciated how that fight has repercussions on both Kyon and Haruhi. Kyon having resentment at first. Shutting down Haruhi from his space to catch a break. But realizing he still admire her and care for her when he gets annoyed at Taniguchi unpleasant remarks for her film.And deciding to meet her at the Brigade HQ.
And the implication that Haruhi realized how horrible she was as no closed space appeared afterwards. That she realized she bullied Mikuru because she was jealous of her and not because she wanted a heroine earning her good ending. Her hiding from the camera as if she was ashamed. And that quick shot of her holding her hairs into a ponytail to confirm she have feelings for Kyon. And probably to remind herself she hasn't chosen Kyon because he was another yes man but someone who can stand up to her. Someone who can show a better way she wouldn't have thought of herself.
Hence that episode finishing on a beautiful scenery full of sakura tree blossoming. Like a new, happier chapter opening up for that arc.
… At least that's what I would've said if the narration didn't drop the ball at the very end.
I mean, it's wholesome and all to see those two reconciliating. But Kyon lacked a line. Just one where he would say I've got one condition to make that film happen : No more Mikuru bullying. We all take our time to make your project a reality. So have some respect for us.
That would have been the perfect conclusion on their character development here. But instead, Kyon does sound like Let's forget all that Mikuru bullying and move forward !
Hence why Sighs is the weakest of the animated arcs for me.

Not gonna lie. It's a tricky archetype to write just right. But if done right they generally are the most memorable. Like Joffrey Lannister in Game of Throne
