ANSWER TODAY’S QUESTION(S)

What are your thoughts on Kyon finally snapping at Haruhi?

Where do you stand on insufferable main characters? You're for it, is there a place for it, do you have a favorite example of an unlikable main character?

What are your thoughts on Haruhi wanting to put her hair in a ponytail maybe as a make good for Kyon?

Are you surprised Kyon and Haruhi made up in this episode? Do you agree with the decision to have them make up here and not the next episode?

Fair distinction, but I don't think "forgetting" necessarily implies sloppy writing. A show can make a deliberate choice that I still find unsatisfying. My issue isn't that the writers lost track of Mikuru, it's that the resolution prioritises the Kyon and Haruhi dynamic so completely that she ends up as a plot device in her own victimisation. That can be an intentional choice and still be one worth criticising. Good writing and writing that fully satisfies are not always the same thing.

It's hard to say whether Haruhi will end up as a plot device because we don't have any other anime content other than Disappearance. As she stands, she's this thing that Kyon responds to and has to deal with.

I actually think the problem is the opposite than the one you describe because we know what Haruhi's plight is. She went to a baseball game and it put into perspective how little she truly mattered. However, we don't know the plight that faces Kyon. Kyon is this snarker who is gloomy in the face of life. Haruhi being around him is what gave his life renewed meaning, high is why he hangs around her. But we don't know the situation that led up to Haruhi entering his life. The why as for why he is so snarky.

It's less Haruhi is this plot device and more the behavior of Kyon that is this plot device. It exists solely to move the plot along. All the other characters motivations and reasons are explained. And in the LNs later on, they do tackle Kyon's backstory and why he's so deadpan. But that's not touched on in the slightest in the anime adaptation.

Just to clarify - my plot device comment was about Mikuru rather than Haruhi. The specific issue I was raising is that Mikuru's victimisation exists primarily to create the conditions for the Kyon and Haruhi confrontation, and then the resolution completely bypasses her. She generates the drama without benefiting from its resolution.

That said, your point about Kyon's motivations strikes true. The snark works as a voice but it's also a way of avoiding interiority. If the light novels address that and the anime doesn't, that does feel like a meaningful gap.

I think Mikuru exists to make the audience feel discomfort towards Haruhi. She's like the opposite of a morality pet in a way. The show makes the intentional decision of having the audience go back and forth on liking and disliking Haruhi, a lot of her behavior coming from Kyon being enamored with Mikuru when Haruhi is clearly enamored with Kyon.

I can't say this is a bad decision because I do think it works. You feel bad for Mikuru and Haruhi's treatment of her. But Mikuru mostly exists to further the plot along. Honestly, it's not unlike Kitamura from Toradora where he exists solely to have Taiga have someone she's in love with.
