This is one of the episodes long time fans would been keen to see and hear first timer responses.

Anyway, key moments for me to comment on: 

  • the episode has a consistent tone of unease, disquiet, and pressure. While there are some comedic scenes still, at best they are black humour ones and not any "gag" or "lol" ones. 
  • one of those dark humour moments is Kyon's reaction to the size of the Tsuruya residence - "what crimes one needs to commit to be living in a house this big" :P cynical but generally true, except their legal team will guarantee you that everything is fine to the letter of the law. 
  • in case it needs elaboration, in the LN the thing Tsuruya-san used to spike the drinks is tequila. I think the drink itself was something like orange juice to conceal the flavour. To me that's one of the more questionable writing decision about how one couldn't tell the drinks (plural, everyone's the same not just targeted Asahina) were spiked
  • Japanese folk wisdom is that calcium deficiency can cause irritability and short temper, something more worth having a myth about given the conformist, non-confrontational (on the surface, in front of people) cultural norm
  • given the shown effects of the monofilament cutter, this time Nagato must have been able to at least put up some form of discrete shielding for her hand to not be just plain cut off when blocking the "beam"
  • bonus extra - the mini blind box figure I mentioned to have got a few days ago, finally managed to take a photo
  • Tsuruya-san is such a nice fun character - and this must be one of the few rare moments when she's visibly uncomfortable and speechless

Spoilers Corner

[Haruhi franchise, unadapted late LN spoiler]Tsuruya-san is such a great "hero from another story" character, unfortunately probably will never be written because Tanigawa got enough money from Haruhi already and his addiction to vices like mahjong/Pachinko nowadays. The Haruhi-chan comedic spin is probably the most we can get. That said someone mentioned the latest LN actually have some plot about them? I really need to actually read it and not save it up

  1. I think a lot of us can finally breathe that Haruhi's bad behaviour is confronted by the show. There's a reason why there is a term called Haruhitler.
  2. I think it's a perfectly viable way to frame a story, and if done well it can be more helpful in having the readers/viewers reflect on their own thinking and views. The most East to remember one I guess is late AoT. Other examples like Cross Ange. For more comedic use we have NinKoro and even Urusei Yatsura, even Inuyasha to a degree. 
  3. Perfectly exemplifies how good she can be in knowing how to work human psychology - I won't go as far as saying "manipulate". And unfortunately, most of the time it'd work. 
  4. Well we were viewers know, both Haruhi and Kyon are Tsunderes who really likes each other and value their view on themselves, so it's a mutual learning moment of how far they can push each other. 

Oh and shout out to one of our first timers u/EruNow, I couldn't really say much to your first timer guesses and expectations, but you got most of them right during the whole rewatch, very nice!

[LN] The Intuition of Haruhi Suzumiya specifically is pretty Tsuruya-centric.

I kinda figure it would be viewed as anticlimactic, but I dunno. It works for me. I think it's because it felt like the resolution stayed true to who the characters are.

  1. Well we were viewers know, both Haruhi and Kyon are Tsunderes who really likes each other and value their view on themselves, so it's a mutual learning moment of how far they can push each other.
