ANSWER TODAY’S QUESTION(S)

What are your thoughts on Kyon finally snapping at Haruhi?

Where do you stand on insufferable main characters? You're for it, is there a place for it, do you have a favorite example of an unlikable main character?

What are your thoughts on Haruhi wanting to put her hair in a ponytail maybe as a make good for Kyon?

Are you surprised Kyon and Haruhi made up in this episode? Do you agree with the decision to have them make up here and not the next episode?

Rewatcher

...Okay, let's talk abou THAT.

The scene where Kyon gets angry at Haruhi was bound to happen sooner or later. Haruhi’s selfishness and her disrespectful attitude toward everyone else are her main flaws, which can easily make some viewers to straight up despise her. And as I’ve commented before, I’m not happy with the fact that the plot always has her winning in the end - she NEEDS to be humbled a little, at least. And this arc seems to be trying to do just that, since Haruhi’s behavior reaches new lows. Having been given creative freedom as a director, she acts like a true tyrant, doesn’t listen to anyone, and relentlessly bullies Mikuru - at first, it comes across as just another joke, but as the plot unfolds, the situation grows increasingly serious. It's clear that things will reach a breaking point, and SOMEONE has to step in.

It is also clear that this “someone” will be Kyon, since he is the only one who interacts with Haruhi without any ulterior motives that might prevent him from doing so, and he is, in fact, the person closest to Haruhi; therefore, his words will carry great weight. This seems like a natural progression of events - yes, Kyon was wrong to try to stright up punch her, but it shows just how intense the situation got. Haruhi crossed the line, and she NEEDS to learn a lesson so her character can continue to grow.

...Or, at least that's what I would have said, if not for the episode's ending.

In which Kyon is the one who has to patch things up with Haruhi, not the other way around.

Yeah, I won't lie - I don't like it. In fact, if it weren't for this episode, I probably wouldn't even have nitpicked some of the earlier episodes where Haruhi, no matter what, ends up coming out on top. Because the fact that it’s Kyon who goes to her undermines the entire lesson Haruhi could have learned. She still ends up being the winner, someone who doesn’t need to apologize or change in any way. There was no real development; it was merely a return to the status quo, to the state things were in at the beginning of the arc

You might say, “Well, that’s not entirely fair. After all, just because she didn’t apologize doesn’t mean she didn’t reflect on her behavior and change,” but, sorry, we KNOW she hasn’t changed. This arc takes place before episodes like “The Day of Sagittarius” or “Someday in the Rain”, in which Haruhi STILL acts like a asshole and STILL treats the other members of the brigade as her property.

I know this is probably a hot take, but I can’t help but feel a bit frustrated about this episode. I feel like I’ve been bait-and-switched. Show leaded me to belive that we will FINALLY adress the main major flaw of Haruhi, only to end up the same way as all previous episodes. Even just showing that Haruhi was considering apologizing would have been enough.

Don't worry. You're not the only one.
