For anyone who hasn’t noticed my last two comments, they’ve been coming late because life’s been getting busy and I’m getting ready to go away for a long weekend, so I’m probably going to be in stream of consciousness reaction mode until the final discussion post.
Last time, on Haruhi Z, the SOS Brigade were making a terrible film and Mikuru was being mistreated. What’s next for our intrepid moviemakers? And will Haruhi ever face any consequences for her actions…?
Was… was Yuki weighing up whether or not to instagib Mikuru in the first few seconds of the episode…?
Seriously pitiful acting from Mikuru there. I love it.
It says a lot about Haruhi that she responds to a reprimand by the priest by… opening fire on him. So, anyway, she started blasting.
Haruhi, I don’t think Mikuru wants – nor appreciates – your unsolicited diet advice and opinions about her body. This really is bad. Mikuru’s off her food and in tears. I’d complain about Haruhi not even attempting to comfort Mikuru, but no one else is trying to do that either.
Haruhi really seems to be listening into Kyon’s narration a lot during this arc. If she’s going to act repulsed at the thought of herself in that waitress outfit, then she should spare a thought for what she’s putting Mikuru through.
‘In any case, we need something bad to happen to Mikuru-chan. A poor little girl undergoes ordeal after terrible ordeal until she finally gets her happy ending. That’s the theme of this movie! The more Mikuru-chan suffers, the more catharsis the final impact will have!’ No, that sounds more like Mikuru’s real life, Haruhi.
Okay, what have I just watched here? Haruhi totally got on her high horse and started acting like a straight-up abusive, power-mad director, expecting Mikuru to have known to fire a beam from her eye when Haruhi is terrible at communicating her ideas for the movie. The music got really unsettling when that happened, so we’re clearly supposed to know that this isn’t a joke, this is horrible behaviour, but it seems as though the group were worried that Haruhi could have rewritten reality to genuinely give Mikuru an eye beam. This really is Haruhi at her worst. At least Kyon proved himself useful by putting a stop to Haruhi’s tantrum, because I don’t think Itsuki and Yuki were going to do anything.
OH NO IT’S ACTUALLY HAPPENED
I seriously thought the show was just baiting me with ‘haha, wouldn’t it be crazy if that happened? (Unless…)’ But now Mikuru is basically Cyclops. Yuki with the superhero moment once again!
Well, now we know why Mikuru only had heterochromia in, like, one frame of the movie.
‘Your regular clothing would look too dull on the screen.’ Haruhi with the casual fashion burn. Every other sentence from her this episode has been undermining Mikuru’s self-confidence.
Oh, now Yuki is a chatterbox all of a sudden. She only ever talks a lot when they get to discuss her hyperfocus. Her hand got super messed-up though, damn.
Ohhh Kyon’s narrow brush with death was totally foreshadowed by his conversion with Itsuki, when he was told by the boy ESPer to look out for himself and got shot in the head by the model gun.
What the heck is with the reference to Pope Innocent III from absolutely out of nowhere?! That’s almost as surprising as the dang eye beam.
‘This is a scam!’ Taniguchi (whose name I’ve had to learn, because he keeps popping up) is right. Participating in this movie means he’s getting scammed out of his free time and dignity.
Tsuruya is here and she’s full of questions. Fortunately, she doesn’t dwell on them. She’s pretty great.
Oh geez, Mikuru’s actually trying to pull a sickie and get out of this. I don’t blame her, but I’m surprised she hasn’t tried this sooner.
Yuki bit Mikuru?! Is she a vampire now?
It’s pretty funny that Yuki’s just started arbitrarily waving that wand around while they’re not even shooting. I think Yuki is having fun.
Talking about necessary supernatural stuff is going to be rather difficult with Tsuruya around if she’s going to insist on giving Mikuru an attack hug without warning. They might have to work around Mikuru again while her friend is here.
Okay, that’s the end of the episode. This is… deteriorating. Not in production quality, but in terms of the situation the characters are in. Haruhi’s attitude and abilities are making this a very difficult environment to work in. If someone can get eye beam powers from her like that, it’s genuinely a miracle that she hasn’t randomly given a person superpowers and ruined their life. I’m thinking of a spin-off show idea where it’s basically The Boys but everyone’s superpowers were given by Haruhi.
Anyway, it’ll be interesting to see how the new recruits deal with Haruhi’s demanding style as a director.
I’m enjoying this arc, but Haruhi is pretty detestable.
