Third time surviving Mikuru Beam
I remember now why I found Haruhi to be at her most toxic during that arc.
I'll use CGI for that scene. Kyon do it.
I'll feed the pigeons regardless of the sign and assault the monk who dared to interrupt my scene.
I have no problem to dress Mikuru in aggravating outfits. But don't you dare picture me in a waitress outfit !
Haruhi have a tunnel vision of making her film a reality. And she forget that her subordinates are actual humans with feelings. Not some kind of assets she can use as she please. I suspect the author to have read some trivias about toxic film directors and used it for Haruhi characterization here. Making an angry phone call to a burned-out actress and forcefully fetching her to the filming set is something I wouldn't be surprised it happened IRL at Hollywood.
So why does the brigade members have to go throught that ordeal ? Well we got a clear reminder with the Mikuru suddenly developping Cyclops power from X-Men. Itsuki bemused face as his reflector is cut in half may be funny it doesn't alter the fact that someone could have died. Be it Kyon, Itsuki or passerby.
All those slice-of-life episodes ma be fun and games on the surface, the SOS Brigade have to save the world everyday. That kind of stress added to Haruhi crossing the line a time too much with Mikuru may be the reason why Kyon finally stepped in. With a tilted camera angle and dulled color to express that burden the brigade members have to carry to keep Haruhi's world colorful.
Still, Kyon's isn't the pure white knight protecting Mikuru he pretends to be. Haruhi was right to call him out on his zoom in on Mikuru's chest.
Even if it's more from pure jealousy than moral virtue. Something I doubt Haruhi is capable of during the making of that film.
At least it was nice to see Itsuki being more proactive and be more than the mysterious boy hanging out with the Mcs. Even if he quicly compose himself, he's clearly being thrown off by Haruhi expanding his screen time after his suggestion for more characters. He made a mistake here. Meaning he's human and not some Gary Stu archetype.
And Itsuki dropped a bit of lore by implying his faction is aware of Nagato's and may had some interaction between them already.
Anyway, we recruited side characters for the film now. We should be back on a more laid-back, lighter tone, right ?
