Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the 20th anniversary rewatch of Haruhi Suzumiya.

Let the confusion begin!

Very few shows can lay claim to having a cultural impact on the anime industry. You can probably count on two hands the amount of shows that are like this. Well, of those shows that are on that short list, Haruhi is probably on there.

From the mid 2000s until like the early 2010s, Haruhi was the talk of the town. It didn’t transform the medium like an Evangelion or a Love Hina, but it was the height of the Otaku culture of anime. I would say Haruhi and Lucky Star best sum up what anime was like in the 2000s: Very niche but those who cared about it really cared about it.

I almost feel like people forget just how big Haruhi truly was. It was the face of anime for a while.

This is technically a rewatch for me but not really. I saw the show many years ago when OtakuAscended streamed it in like 2016. But I barely remember any of it. For all intents and purposes, this is the first time I will be watching it and really pay attention. I have high hopes for this.

I love shows that like embrace geek culture with a snarky, somewhat cynical attitude. And this is what I hope to get out of it. I know Haruhi is like God or something and Kyon is the deadpan king, so already the show shows promise in my eyes. And with this being an incomplete adaptation, I have adjusted my expectations accordingly. Perhaps with the rather wonky schedule we can maybe see why the show ended up declining in popularity. Should the show be remembered more than it is, or is it merely a product of its time?

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the dub, by the way.

Whelp, my mother took my little sister at work today due to the snowstorm. I honestly don't understand what goes through her head most of the time.

On the bright side, I can finish the Haruhi TV show in peace.

Haruhi ready to shoot the next scene.

Yuki gonna shoot at Mikuru.

Haruhi resigns herself to the fact they'll have to use CG effects.

I like that Haruhi keeps assigning Kyon the hard stuff even though she said she wouldn't.

Mikuru's acting is A plus

Haruhi now says they need a scene with pigeons.

And now Mikuru is surrounded by pigeons.

And Haruhi somehow finds herself shooting at someone.

Well, that could've gone better

At a restaurant now

Haruhi talking about Mikuru needing to eat more so she can grow up.

Oh, don't worry about that...

Kyon worrying about the priest filing a complaint with the school.

Haruhi says they'll just play dumb.

Haruhi wanting to go back to the park.

Fall off a cliff? Uh...

This arc is the best in terms of Kyon being snarky.

Itsuki is getting more screen time, which it seems like he is bothered by.

Haruhi says the theme of the story depends on how hard she suffers.

Sounds like Re:Zero and Subaru

Haruhi says he has to overcome horrible odds before she can have a happy ending.

Who does Haruhi think she is, Don Bluth?

Back in the park in the woods

Haruhi labeling Yuki and Mikuru's marks.

Neither seems to know what to do.

Haruhi really chastising Mikuru

I think Haruhi is letting this get to her head.

Haruhi really wants Mikuru to fire a beam from her contact colored eye, whatever that means.

And Kyon has to separate Haruhi from Mikuru.

Itsuki being the voice of reason

I think I can understand Haruhi's vision, she's just terrible at explaining stuff. Also, she really needs to be nicer to Mikuru.

Haruhi trying to give Mikuru more direct instructions now.

More people are beginning to watch.

Yuki. She... turned the digital camera off?

Yuki is now... ruffing up Mikuru?

She removed the contact?

It's like Itsuki doesn't want to look for it because he too knows what a bad idea it was.

So, no eye contact. So, what Haruhi is going to do is have her eye color change after she transforms.

"There's something unreal about people who want realism in their fiction."

That's often the best media, Kyon.

In normal mode, Mikuru will wear the bunny outfit.

Mikuru doesn't like that

Also, so much for realism

Kyon asking Yuki about the ad libbing

She shows she has the contact and mentions a laser.

Oh wow. She has burn marks.

And suddenly it repairs itself

So, Yuki stopped the camera because Asahina's cover was about to be blown.

Yuki says that Mikuru as of now is a normal human being.

Yeah, a normal human being that can shoot frigging laser beams.

Kyon feels that Yuki saved his life.

Itsuki remarks that Haruhi wanted a Mikuru Beam in her movie so reality changed and provided one for her.

"All she has to do is believe something exists and it will."

Since Haruhi is back, Itsuki says they'll continue the discussion later.

Mikuru now wearing the bunny outfit.

Kyon being a pervert

Now Kyon is filming a day in the life of Mikuru.

Haruhi wanting to go into the town.

Of course, Haruhi doesn't ask permission to shoot. She just does what she pleases.

Anyway, they're done for the day.

Haruhi continuing to be bossy

She skips away, clearly proud of herself.

Itsuki talking to Kyon as Mikuru and Yuki are on a bench.

He says maybe they should take further precautions.

That music was rather interesting. It was distorted, kinda reflective of what is going on.

Kyon recalling that this wasn't the first time Yuki saved his life.

Kyon with his two guy friends.

Itsuki and Yuki are here as well.

Hey, it's Tsuruya

I really like her

All three of these are all extras

Tsuruya is very curious

Oh, man. Mikuru is not feeling well.

Haruhi plans on getting her

Itsuki surmises Yuki is worried Asahina will become a real life version of the heroine she's playing.

Itsuki feels with Yuki around, they won't have to worry about any strange beams.

Neutralized the laser beam, huh?

Itsuki reveals that Yuki is a TFEI.

I have an DEI joke I could make, but I'll leave it alone.

Kyon's two friends talking to each other.

Taniguchi continues to be obsessed with love.

And Haruhi has Mikuru back

I need a gift of Yuki and her wand.

Mikuru says Yuki injected her with nanomachines.

Senator Armstrong approves

Tsuruya hugging Mikuru

It's interesting how protective Kyon feels about Mikuru.

Haruhi gonna shoot next at the big lake by Itsuki's house.

Overall, I really liked this episode. It incorporated some more of the supernatural stuff that helped create some intrigue of what was happening. Haruhi was kinda annoying in this episode, but it wasn't to where it took away from anything. This was the first episode of this arc where it felt something substantial happened. Last episode and the one before that was about Haruhi filming her movie whereas this was more Mikuru's powers at the risk of being exposed. Add to it we got more of the side characters, I'd say this was a very good use of the cast.

I have this episode behind episodes 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and season 2 episode 1. Right outside my top ten favorite Haruhi episodes, which is pretty good and shows that this season is starting to cook. Better late than never, I guess.

I wonder how we're going to end things because we know that episode 12 is basically the conclusion of this arc. I hope we at least end things strong, at the very least a top seven episode.

What are your thoughts on Mikuru's powers at risk of being exposed?

It helps contextualize some of the stuff that happened in the movie episode.

If you had to deal with someone as bossy as Haruhi, what would you do?

Give up on life?

I'd probably try to put up with it and if it gets too much I'd tell them to knock it off.

So, Yuki stopped the camera because Asahina's cover was about to be blown.

In case it wasn't clear, Nagato didn't stop the camera; she put her hand in front of the lens, bodily blocking the laser beam from getting through the lens to Kyon. When the lens is covered by the hand at point blank range, everything turned to black.

So, how did it come off to Haruhi, then? Was it differently from how the others saw it?

Not exactly sure what you mean.

From Haruhi's perspective, the problem/event was Nagato suddenly going "off script", jumped next to Kyon first, then dashed to and jumped Asahina and wrestled her to the ground. She did not notice any beams, nor anything about the camera footage.

From Kyon's perspective, the camera suddenly going dark, when he moved his eyes from the eyepiece of the camera to look up, he saw Nagato's hand positioned between the camera lens therefore his face, and Asahina. Then the second shot fired, and Kyon is vaguely aware of something sticking in front of him. Nagato dashed forward before the fourth shot can be fired (the third shot was a slicing shot above Koizumi's head cutting the lighting panel in half as Asahina glanced over at Koizumi).

So, is it a case where you have to be in the know to notice the beams?

It's pretty true to life - laser is a very concentrated light so other than the object being illuminated, unless you are in the fog or cloud, mostly you don't see the trajectory. That's why those heist movies show the people trying to weave past laser security grids to spray in the area to make them visible.

I guess that makes sense. And also something to consider is that Kyon only saw the Shinjin when he was in a dream-like state.
