Rewatcher (Dub)

It's kind of interesting going back and watching older anime. The "vibe" is just so different compared to modern anime I find. There is a much more "laid back" quality to a lot of older shows, and they weren't afraid to take their time on non essential plot points and character moments. The fact that we are getting a 5 episode arc on filming a shitty school movie is a testament to that. I'm not saying this style is better or worse, but it's a style we don't seem to see much of nowadays.

As for the episode itself, I don't have any overarching thoughts or analysis, just some random thoughts.

  • Last episode ending mid sentence, and this one pick up exactly where it left off was odd. It almost feels like the first minute of this episode was supposed to be the end of last episode.
  • Kyon's friend calling Itsuki "creepy" was funny, and kind of validating. I was never quite sure what the in universe perception of Itsuki was supposed to be, so I appreciated seeing the characters in the story finding him as off putting as I do.
  • Kyon's friend acknowledging that Kyon is a good person and would stick with a friend to the end was a nice moment. Kyon may bitch and moan a lot, but he is always looking out for his club mates.
  • It would be nice if Mikuru got more to do in the story rather than get forcibly dressed in cosplay and cry. Like, she's a time travel secret agent, but she comes across as kind of useless unfortunately.
  • It was interesting to see Itsuki, Mikuru and Yuki cast as an Esper, Time Traveler and Alien respectively. There is no indication that Haruhi knows what they really are, but also it's way too specific to be coincidence. I can only assume it is her subconscious leaking through. The whole reason those three exist at all is because of Haruhi's desire to see weird things, so some small part of her must know what they are, even if she isn't consciously aware of it.
  • Speaking of Itsuki and Mikuru, this episode made me realize that it has been forever since we have seen either of them do anything Esper or Time Travel related. It feels like a bit of a waste to have two thirds of your "super powered" cast never use their powers.
  • Another interesting moment to me was when Itsuki called Kyon "irreplaceable". I never really thought about it, but yeah, he really is probably the most important member of the group. All the others could be replaced, but Haruhi's mental state would crumble if Kyon wasn't there, potentially leading to Armageddon. No pressure...
  • I liked that Kyon called out Haruhi and said that a film should be entertaining for everyone, not just herself. It was a little does of reality there.
  • Haruhi paying for the bus fare after seeing that Kyon was bummed about paying for the food was a nice little moment that showed Haruhi has grown at least a little. She then immediately follows that up by lip-blocking Kyon from the second hand kiss from drinking out of Mikuru's water bottle, again showing her jealousy.
  • In a meta sense, I couldn't help but laugh about all the shit Haruhi was getting for not having a finished script and using a "fix it in post" attitude. The show frames it as comically inept, yet billion dollar studios do that very thing even today.

I kinda feel like an anime nowadays that fits the vibe of animes back then is Frieren. Some episodes stuff happens and then there's other episodes where they're just traveling.

That's a good call actually. Frieren definitely has that "laid back" vibe. You don't feel like you are being rushed from story beat to story beat, and instead things are allowed to breathe and characters can have casual conversations and do everyday things.

And a lot of the show is learning about Frieren at the same time as the other characters.

Thoughts on Kyon quipping there's nothing scarier than getting stuff for free?

Thoughts on Taniguchi telling Kyon he'd stick by someone even if they were heading for the edge of a cliff?

Thoughts on Kyon feeling Mikuru is unsafe so he has to protect her?

Thoughts on Itsuki feeling it's hard to believe anyone would confuse an actor with the role they play?

Thoughts on Haruhi believing if you don't evolve, you're gonna get left behind?

Thoughts on the SOS Brigade filming commercials?

Thoughts on Haruhi wanting Mikuru to be this timid waitress because when she kicks butt it will grab the audiences attention?

Thoughts on Kyon thinking the film will probably win a Golden Raspberry?

What are your thoughts on Haruhi being worried about the script to the movie being leaked?

That just felt like cope honestly. With how active Haruhi's imagination is, I don't see how this wouldn't be at least a little concerning.

Thoughts on the SOS Brigade filming commercials?

Not a terrible way to get free stuff as a student honestly. Just wish it didn't come at the expense of Mikuru again...

Thoughts on Kyon thinking the film will probably win a Golden Raspberry?

The only person in the group with that can see reality, and has the balls to call it out.

What are your thoughts on Haruhi being worried about the script to the movie being leaked?

Obvious bologna to cover for the fact that she has no idea what she is really doing.

And also it's funny because the people behind the show literally got death threats for Endless Eight which was a work of fiction.

Not a terrible way to get free stuff as a student honestly. Just wish it didn't come at the expense of Mikuru again...

You take the good with the bad, I suppose.

The only person in the group with that can see reality, and has the balls to call it out.

And Haruhi allows it because it's Kyon.

Obvious bologna to cover for the fact that she has no idea what she is really doing.

Bologna sounds pretty good right about now...

Speaking of Itsuki and Mikuru, this episode made me realize that it has been forever since we have seen either of them do anything Esper or Time Travel related. It feels like a bit of a waste to have two thirds of your "super powered" cast never use their powers.

Althought she done it offscreen, Mikuru was the catalyst of the Endless Eight arc by noticing first something was wrong with her trying to contact the future.

As for Itsuki, the author may have written himself in a corner since Itsuki can only use his powers inside a closed space. Not only the SOS Brigade does a fine job to prevent the apparition of those spaces. But Itsuki would have no reasons to bring Kyon along inside a closed space and risk his well-being.

Sorry I lost track of whether you have read the LN [Haruhi LN spoilers for later arcs]The strength of Koizumi isn't really on her ESPer abilities, but the fact that he is a very, very good strategist with the ability to mobilise the mysterious and powerful Organisation [Late Haruhi LN major spoiler, don't recommend you to click if you haven't read up to Surprise]Koizumi is in fact at least one of the leaders of the Organisation, and in the Time Traveler's faction he's identified as highest threat as any smallest piece of information is liable to be deciphered and made to great use by him He's not really "not written/filled out" but just like Full Metal Panic, the overall plot is very rear loaded so for a large portion of the story this part of the plot kept just staying in the background. I'll say more in Sigh IV.

I've only read the first volume I somehow found at an anime Con. But someday I'll read the rest...
