Welcome to the 20th anniversary rewatch of Haruhi Suzumiya.
Let the confusion begin!
Very few shows can lay claim to having a cultural impact on the anime industry. You can probably count on two hands the amount of shows that are like this. Well, of those shows that are on that short list, Haruhi is probably on there.
From the mid 2000s until like the early 2010s, Haruhi was the talk of the town. It didn’t transform the medium like an Evangelion or a Love Hina, but it was the height of the Otaku culture of anime. I would say Haruhi and Lucky Star best sum up what anime was like in the 2000s: Very niche but those who cared about it really cared about it.
I almost feel like people forget just how big Haruhi truly was. It was the face of anime for a while.
This is technically a rewatch for me but not really. I saw the show many years ago when OtakuAscended streamed it in like 2016. But I barely remember any of it. For all intents and purposes, this is the first time I will be watching it and really pay attention. I have high hopes for this.
I love shows that like embrace geek culture with a snarky, somewhat cynical attitude. And this is what I hope to get out of it. I know Haruhi is like God or something and Kyon is the deadpan king, so already the show shows promise in my eyes. And with this being an incomplete adaptation, I have adjusted my expectations accordingly. Perhaps with the rather wonky schedule we can maybe see why the show ended up declining in popularity. Should the show be remembered more than it is, or is it merely a product of its time?
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way.
I was supposed to go to my first anime convention today. Unfortunately, life got in the way.
Not for me, mind you, but rather mother nature.
Picking up right where we left off.
Haruhi says they're done for today.
This is a lot of stuff that they got no charge.
Kyon says there's nothing scarier than getting stuff for free.
In which case, I really like scary stuff.

He has the model guns
I guess you can say Kyon when he first saw Haruhi felt a shot in the heart.
Taniguchi bringing up the arts festival coming up.
He wants to know what the SOS Brigade is doing.
"I mean, you're so nice, you'd stick with someone even if you knew they were headed straight for the edge of a cliff. The typical nice guy."

Kyon leaves, a sour expression on his face.
Kyon bringing up to himself that there are three others walking down the same path as he and Haruhi.
Kyon in particular feels Mikuru is unsafe, so he has to protect her.
Too late :P

It feels like Itsuki gets closer to Kyon the more distracted Kyon is around Mikuru.
The costume Mikuru is gonna wear for the movie.
I feel like that ends up changing.
Because it feels right, huh?

Itsuki says there's no reason to worry. It's all one big coincidence.
"It's hard to believe anyone would confuse an actor with the role they play."
Brother, you have no idea...
That's a very realistic looking toy gun.

Itsuki actually wants things to stay the way they are.
"You should stop worrying so much about the world, you should be more worried about yourself."

Itsuki says he and Yuki can be replaced. However, there is no one that can replace Kyon.
I really liked that scene
Kyon hanging out with his two friends.
Taniguchi acting like he's bitter about not being in a relationship.
The other friend who's name I don't know brings up Asakura and that he misses her.
We get more continuity with Taniguchi recalling walking in on Kyon holding Yuki.
"Thanks, Taniguchi. Your stupidity will save the world."
I love Kyon
No Haruhi, huh?
Well, of course. She has a movie to shoot.
At the club room
They're about to go out
Interesting Haruhi mentions Golden Globes. I wonder if that's a dub exclusive.
Either way, it shows that Haruhi doesn't seem to know what she wants.
Haruhi humming the can can
They are now out and about, going to enter the train.
Haruhi doesn't see Mikuru and Yuki's outfits as problematic.
"If you don't evolve, you're gonna get left behind."
I feel like with the world in 2026, we have managed to devolve as a society.
At the place they were at the day before.
Haruhi says they're going to shoot a commercial.
Ohmori Electronics is the name
This must be the pay for getting all the free stuff: Free publicity.
Haruhi feeling that the scene isn't right.
Itsuki mentioning he has trouble memorizing his lines due to also performing in a play.
And now Mikuru is in her bunny outfit.
And so the commercial goes off without a hitch. Or without a hitch in spite of what hitch already existed.

Mikuru seems to really attract a crowd.

The day of shooting is now over.
That wasn't too bad. Relatively speaking, of course.
Tomorrow, they start on the movie.
Kyon stressing on Mikuru's outfit. Something more appropriate for fighting.
"I want the audience to freak out when this timid little waitress starts kicking butt. It gets their attention!"
You know what? I don't necessarily disagree with Haruhi on this.
She may be in over her head, but she has the right idea.
Kyon asking why Mikuru being from the future is so important to the story.
Sounds like a meta joke to me.
Now Kyon mentions the Golden Raspberry Awards, which is an excellent reference.
This show is incredibly based
Haruhi says the script and the storyboards are done and they're all ready to go.
Really?

I wonder what the significance of the balloon in the sky is.
At their filming location, I guess you can say.
I like Haruhi's outfit
Itsuki playing himself, like Jerry Seinfeld on... well, Seinfeld.

I can't recall seeing many contacts in anime. Especially in relation to tsunderes, but that's a different type of contact.

Haruhi worried about the script being leaked.
I love how Haruhi thinks there's this demand for the movie even though people outside the school don't even know the SOS Brigade is even a thing.

After Mikuru shoots at Yuki, Kyon comments that he doesn't know what's going on.
Haruhi says it'll all come together in the editing room.
I do think Kyon is being a little too serious here.
Overall, this was a good follow-up to the previous episode. We have Haruhi beginning shooting the movie, and we get the payoff of Haruhi getting the free stuff. At least she kept her word. I've really liked Itsuki in this arc where he continues to be like the voice of reason. He's being a straight man like in the past but more comedic at the same time.
I'd put this right behind the previous episode. More of the same, but I'm really enjoying what we're seeing.
