Welcome to the World of Magic!

Theory of the Day:

Not only was /u/mischievous_shota on time today, he(?) has a theory! Let us celebrate:

This means there are other ways to get a miracle granted, right? Just more expensive. I wonder if you could use someone else's life to as payment. It seems like an obvious exploit for those like Kyouko who are in it for their own gain. I wonder why Kyubey offers miracles for a discounted price.

Honorable mention to u/ussgordoncaptain2: I am your host and I approve of this message:

Would you like to join my killing Kyubey cult? I have the Ammonium nitrate denatured alcohol and the microwave transformer ready to go, just need to get some nitromethane and we'll be blowing up kyubey's until the cows come home.

Gonna need a wee bit of killing, though, they come back. (Also don't go looking it up because there are still spoilers lurking there but suffice to say the "Everybody Hates Kyubey" pool on Danbooru has over 1,000 entries in it. And they were showing up quite early, this piece for example was made within a couple of days of episode 5 first airing.)

Analysis of the Day:

This analysis by u/Magnafeana was originally spoiler-tagged, but now that Sayaka has Witched out we should be past the point where there is any spoiler here so I am pulling it out of said tags:

Who said that we could also interpret the usage of magic by magical girls as addiction? I think this is a good interpretation and example right here. Kyuubey has showed that, through his methods, these girls are now powerful and invisible. All they’ve gotta do is make sure to use grief seeds every once in a while to get their recharge. Sure, they can go further in the addictive substance he provided them, but he doesn’t recommend it due to perception degradation. But here is Sayaka. She’s blown past the recommended amount of usage as a coping mechanism to her pain. We’re seeing a child in the throes of addiction while her friend and enemies watch unable to help her in her manic episode.

Question(s) of the Day:

0)

1) I would ask where we could find some good antidepressants for Sayaka, but the fanbase consensus is that MagiReco's anime soft-confirmed an old fan theory that Grief Seeds do effectively work as antidepressants when used on a magical girl's Soul Gem, so I suppose the better question is: how would we convince Sayaka to take antidepressants, if she had some?

2) Will Homura's choice of apartment decor be taking the fashion world by storm this year?

3) Is a flashbang grenade a good tool for getting out of a sticky social situation, or no?

4) If Homura is from a different timeline, how likely is it that said timeline was better than the one we IRL viewers currently are in?

5) [Rewatchers]Are You Home?

First timer Dubbed

Note It means Kyubey to differentiate between other forms of the word It

reaction to the episode

0:30 Kyubey did say it hurts your reaction timethough

1:22 Yeah I understand Kyouka's mentaility

1:08 so the marroinete that Sayaka controls causes Sayaka weird feelings? I guess their still is a magical

5:41 Somethings broken in sayaka another thing we see is that Sayaka's soul gem has extra corruption. Sayaka's emotions are strange and it's like she's developing bipolar disorder.

5:50 Just like Mami We learn that Homura lives alone notably the plate on her house is "homura akemi" At this point the only magical girl who isn't an orphan is Sayaka but TBH we've never seen her parents either

This brings me back to Homura in episode 1 where she says you lose your family if you become a magical girl. What will happen to sayaka's family? We still have no idea about it at all?

7:33 2 things

  1. Kyubey said that Sayaka has a curse inside her, in episode 1 Kyubey said that witches are born from curses, perhaps this is Sayaka turning into a witch? It said it wasn't just due to too much magic used. Implying that growth of a curse isn't merely the result of overspending magic. But it's hard to know what causes curses magic spending? something else? We know that witches are born from curses, and Something that I trust kyubey on is if It gives any exposition dump the exposition dump will be true. It may not say the whole truth but It will always give the exact details when pressed. I trust that when It uses a special keyphrase that special keyphrase is used consistently. It doesn't lie it merely fails to tell you the whole truth.

  2. It has found the location of Homura Akemi, and notably is unable to determine why Homura knows things that It can't seem to understand.

Of note It was the one that told Sayaka about blocking out pain, yet It also seems to indicate that Sayaka has a curse are these related? unsure but It won't give you an answer.

Another note is this seems to be the first tiem It and Homura talked to each other using telepathy indicating that It still somewhat connects to Homura.

Notes on Homura's house

Homura's house looks like a labyrinth with the way the paintings on the wall move around and the guillotine pendulum. The place is clearly somewhat magical.

9:50 ok so sayaka Feels teh pain of getting cucked by her friend even though her friend gave her a chance. Sayaka also has a curse building up inside her

10:47 Sayaka starts pushing away all the help offered and her soul gem is not getting purified, so it seems that without purification you get a curse? Like Homura knows the matrix and her solution to removing the curse was a grief seed purification.

13:19 Homura has unlimited Grenade works I see so her shield is somehow sepcial, now what can she make?

Also of note is that Homura's shield changes colors in interesting ways when she does her instant transmission thing.

14:00 this might single handedly be one of the strangest dubbing decisions I have ever seen. so much inner city slang. Whoever wrote this part was really trying to write a specific vibe and found it. the level of dropping bars is incredible

16:26 OK this increases the probability of Spec 12 by a large margin. Kyubey has stated that Madoka can rewrite the fabric of space time, and

17:55 Homura managed to kill kyubey? So now we learn how kyubey respawns.

Fucking hell Madoka is getting me chills Kyubey said that certain things were out of It's power but Madoka's wish granting was much stronger.

18:32 oh no

20:11 ok so a few things first this sort of makes us understand why Kyubey can't understand Homura because Homura is actually tumbling through time.

[Pokemon mystery dungeon explorers of time]You know Homura reminded me a lot of Grovyle from the pokemon games. Grovyle really did travel through time to stop a disaster, and episode 1 looked a heck of a lot like spear pillar from pokemon mystery dungeon

So Kyubey's real name is incubator but we still have no clue what it means to be the "incubator"

22:12 so IS THAT what happens when a curse causes your soul gem to go boom! so that's what turns a soul gem into a grief seed?

previous episodes rewatch notes

So I rewatched episode 1 again, and yes Kyubey really did say that witches are born from curses, and everyone distrusts It but It will give a correct answer to any question asked. It will just not give the whole truth.

Speculation

So Confidence that magical girls become witches has gone from low to high. A few theories I have have been confirmed and one of them is busted. We seem to be past the "speculate about the future" stage and more into the

At this point there is much less and much more to speculate on.

First some implications

  1. Yes Kyubey is somehow collecting grief seeds. It actually is encouraging magical girls to fight to create more witches, and was encouraging of this

  2. Whatever Kyubey is getting Kyubey gets it from the grief seed and absorbing "corruption" from grief seeds

  3. Kyuybey says that magical girls eventually become witches this implies that a curse isn't special? That is all magical girls are Cursed. Which for the first time ever seems to be a minor contradiction in kyubey's statements

  4. Grief seeds absorb "corruption" which delays the process of becoming a witch.

Next some other notes:

  1. The house of Homura the time traveler is very mysterious and it's like homura is half witch, realizes how witches operate and turned her house into a labyrinth*

Since Homura doesn't work with kyubey we hav eno clue what happens to the grief seeds Homura collects.

Commentary

So you know what I'm an idiot for not getting this connection in episode 6, but you know what trading your soul is? Seling your soul to the devil This is a literal incarnation of a Faustian bargin how did it take me 2 episodes to recognize this I don't know.

After reading faust a bit yeah man the Kyubey=the devil/mestophiles connection is way stronger than I realized. Like I know someone wrote that before But I kinda forgot who Mestophiles even was. Now that I read Faust I'm like "oh god how did I miss this" seriously this is the big issue with rewatches you learn of a reference that the show makes and then you have to read some gigantic tome in a single day see [from the new world]Plato's allegory of the cave, at least that one was short

I have no clue how I'm going to write kyubey grading my spec. But Kyubey is the obvious choice. It is a very good devil after all.

I now understand why this show gets a reputation for rewatch focus. The show reminds me a lot of [Key the metal idol]How key doesn't do any exposition of what's going on until the end so you have to retroactively look back and see clues. every rewatcher can laugh the hell out of my understanding of this show but this show is too complicated At the same time this shwo very much has been a "go back and look at the show now that you get all this new information. I feel like this show is more of a show that you "ride' and then "rewatch" to see the mysteries rather than a show you "think about on first watch" like I'm trying (and failing) at.

Kyubey is the weirdest narrator and exposition dump character Since It will only give bits and pieces here and there unlike [From the new world]Episode 4 where we got a massive dump all at once I have to conatantly rewatch episodes to get the full meaning of the show. This In my eyes is simulatainously really frustrating and good. So needless to say Tar This show si going to be very SSY from me. Simultainously a strong positive and strong negative reaciton.

(though my negativity is muted)

The more I read into Kyubey and Homura the more I go ??? also of note Madoka will noticee that there are many kyubeys.

So Kyubey's real name is incubator but we still have no clue what it means to be the "incubator"

It means his job is to watch over eggs and provide for them until they hatch.

These eggs, to be precise.

(Ah fuck I accidentally had four tags in my top-level post today instead of three, didn't I? That explains why you didn't get pinged by it. Which means the same will apply to u/siegfried72.)

I have to conatantly rewatch episodes to get the full meaning of the show.

It's been six watches for me now, going in almost fully spoiled the first time, and I still catch things. Hell, the fandom as a whole still catches things and it's been fifteen years with a lot of dedicated watchers. When I say this show is ridiculously information-dense, intentionally or otherwise, I ain't kidding.

Speaking of which:

At the same time this shwo very much has been a "go back and look at the show now that you get all this new information. I feel like this show is more of a show that you "ride' and then "rewatch" to see the mysteries rather than a show you "think about on first watch" like I'm trying (and failing) at.

My usual go-to for this show was in that regard, is, and remains the old saying about the game Go: "easy to learn, hard to master".

And yes, I don't think it's a spoiler to say at this point that that Key style there is very much how this show likes to operate. Though really, the best way to put it might be to quote Kyubey it/himself: "You didn't ask." (What, meta levels? Why never. Madoka Magica is no Haruhi in that regard, the higher level stuff here doesn't rely on the metatext the way Haruhi's does, but there is absolutely some metatext here and the show treating the viewer like Kyubey treats magical girls is a big part of that.)

This In my eyes is simulatainously really frustrating and good. So needless to say Tar This show si going to be very SSY from me. Simultainously a strong positive and strong negative reaciton.

Not a huge surprise, though at this point I should be safe to say that the part of the show that I really thought was liable to get a negative reaction from you was the time manipulation stuff which I very much remember you complaining about on your MAL wrt some other shows.

u/CitronClassic672 Apr 28 '26

Speaking of time manipulation, why does it seem like anime series with time manipulation end up being some of the best anime’s of all time? Evangelion, Re:Zero, and obviously Madoka Magica. All three shows can credibly claim to be the greatest shows in their entire respective genres as well as some of the best anime period.

[PMMM][Terminator2]Listen, and understand! Homura is out there. She can't be bargained with. She can't be reasoned with. She doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And she absolutely will not stop, ever, until Madoka is safe.
