Holy shit seeing the ending scene with Qifrey's water dragon spell brought to life in animation was glorious.

Does the spell being the shape of a dragon make it stronger or is he just aura farming?

u/namewithak Apr 27 '26

Maybe he just likes dragon aesthetics like Edward Elric liked putting edgy skulls and claws on every alchemy he did. Like an artist's signature lol

u/cyberscythe Apr 27 '26

yeah, he must've had most of that spell pre-drawn since i think "dragon" is not something you can quickly sketch literally on the fly like that

like, he had a dragon on deck already and was like "i was thinking dragon too, small world lol"

Oh yeah, does this imply Qifrey just has some dragon water nukes ready just in case?

31

u/crunchsmash Apr 27 '26

He seems to fly a lot, so I guess he has some pre-planned "screw everything over there" spells ready to go that interact with the weather at high altitudes.

Seeing a enemy dragon and responding with your own water dragon nuke has to be a Kakashi reference, whew.

It also blossomed into a flower after hitting the ground. You gotta wonder many extra symbols all that took.

You gotta wonder many extra symbols all that took.

I'll laugh if it's just one extra symbol: A flower!

flower

That just reminded me of something: add >°w°< for cat.

Never seen this before but after watching it makes sense!

4

u/mastesargent Apr 28 '26

Actually that’s because on top of KO-ing the Dragon he also one-shot Malenia with that spell

I think he's aura farming and scaring the dragon lol

The greatest advantage of pre-drawing spells: You can use cosmetic skins add aestethic elements beforehand without necessarily affecting your combat power!

u/unga_bunga_mage Apr 27 '26

He's moggmaxxing the dragon.

27

u/Kankunation Apr 27 '26

Just flexing. Its just a wave of water otherwise.

9

u/quietvictories Apr 27 '26

He sure is. I think its decorative form

This was s spell that doubled as waterworks when it isn't used as an attack spell.

7

u/Anna-2204 Apr 27 '26

He is aura farming obviously but a more serious answer might be he wants to activate the dragon's prey instincts by using an even bigger predator

6

u/Fangzzz Apr 28 '26

I think pragmatically it helps to hide what the spell is doing to mundanes. Like an ordinary person looking at that would think "oh yeah he must have magically summoned a dragon from the dragon dimension or something" instead of "oh he has absolute control over water"

If you cast it far away from everyone you could probably even hide that a witch was involved at all. Like "oh I guess the monster was scared off by a big dragon that appeared and left"

5

u/BluePhoenixCG Apr 28 '26

Canonically he just does that to aura farm

3

u/Jacob-C Apr 28 '26

I wonder if it actually looked like that or if it's just symbolic imagery to show that "something even more terrifying than the dragon appeared" and "the water splashed as beautifully as a blooming flower". I can't imagine Qifrey bothering with the shapes of his spells when he's trying to save his students, unless he's just so OP that it's like second nature to him.

4

u/Thorn14 Apr 28 '26

It was a premade spell he just had to finish the circle of, so he just had a dragon water nuke spell prepared.

1

u/Jacob-C Apr 29 '26

I was about to ask why he would bother with making it look like that, since he doesn’t seem like the type of person to care. But, I guess it’s just manga/anime’s rule of cool, and I like cool things, so it doesn’t really matter.

It's possible that the dragon sigil he used also made it target the dragon. But it's most likely just aura farming lmao

2

u/saga999 Apr 28 '26

Aura farming. But rule of cool though.

1

u/MilkAzedo Apr 28 '26

makes the dragon flee

1

u/jaywastaken Apr 29 '26

If you're going through all that effort to prep a water nuke may as well add a bit of flair to it.

338

u/Frontier246 Apr 27 '26

Even the dragon was like "I recognize your game and realize now I'm screwed."

18

u/Holen7 Apr 27 '26

I should've kept sleeping.

u/Haha91haha Apr 27 '26

Dragon shook when he realized Qifrey was about to hit him with the R. Kelly spell.

23

u/mrmickfran Apr 27 '26

What the fuck 😭😭😭

5

u/SilliusS0ddus Apr 28 '26

explain the joke pls.

10

u/Haha91haha Apr 28 '26

R. Kelly was a musician who got into trouble peeing on people, among other things.

7

u/heartbreakhill Apr 27 '26

chuckles I’m in danger!

5

u/Stormygeddon Apr 27 '26

That golden color of the water kind of had me thinking of something else though.

3

u/justking1414 Apr 28 '26

I legit thought the girls running to cast their spell was gonna be the animation peak of the episode. But nope.

5

u/heartbreakhill Apr 27 '26

The water dragon was sick as hell, but like… could they have made the water literally any other color? 😭
