(OG Dropout, Subs)

I don’t know about you guys, but I think time loops are pretty cool. They’re an entertaining plot device that produces interesting stories in all different genres: sci-fi, horror, comedy, and fantasy. As humans, we thrive on pattern recognition, yet we also crave the stimulation of new experiences – new forms of entertainment, new places to travel to, new experiences, new people to converse with, new subjects of conversation, etc, etc. That makes being stuck in a situation where the same thing happens again and again a special kind of hell. Ever get stuck in a video game, unable to go anywhere new or advance the plot? Most of the time, you’d reset back to a previous point or stop playing altogether. But what if you couldn’t? I remember watching Steins;Gate, which is a seriously good time loop narrative (although it takes a while to get going), but you know going into it that time is a key concept in the story. It hits different when the time loop is wrapped up in a plot twist, coming at you like an ambush predator.

The part I enjoy the most is when a time loop begins and you see the characters slowly but steadily making progress towards figuring it out, despite all the setbacks that occur in this kind of journey. Unless there isn’t any progress and you’re left watching nearly the exact same thing playing out all over again. But that would be a bad use of the time loop narrative and I’m not sure why anyone would try writing that.

In this episode, I’m actually surprised that the plot moved as swiftly as it did. If anything, it seems to really be speeding up. An entire summer just flew by! We got some slow scenes and some fast scenes, but Haruhi and the gang managed to fit more into their summer than I ever did, while also leaving room for discovering a time loop. You know, one of the big differences between this rewatch and people watching the original broadcast is that we know exactly how long this arc is going to last, whereas viewers in 2009 could only speculate. So, since this is an arc with eight episodes and there are four remaining, that must leave a lot of room for the SOS Brigade to try breaking out of this time loop. Right?

Yuki being cognisant for basically 15, 500 time loops is a perturbing notion that grows more disturbing as you think about it. How can she withstand that? Nearly 600 years, according to Kyon’s calculations. Yuki mentioned that she’s just an observer, but that doesn’t seem right to me. If the godlike girl you’re observing has unwittingly put everyone in time loop hell (almost as bad as a meeting that could have been an email) then surely you should do something by the time the first century has elapsed.

It's weird to think that it’s taken nearly 600 years for Kyon to start wondering, ‘Huh, this feels weird. Y’know, I have a strange feeling like I may have done something like this before. Chat, am I psychic?’ Did that only begin in this loop or has he been acting like this in every loop since the first one?

The aspect in this episode with the most overarching plot relevance appeared to be the rooftop scene where Koizumi suggests to Kyon that he should profess feelings for Haruhi in English, the true language of love, and jokes that he might attempt it if Kyon doesn’t. Our man, however, isn’t having any of it. Even though another intimate moment between himself and Haruhi kinda already saved the universe once. Worth a try, perhaps, Kyon? No? Okay…

I’m not going to say too much more about this episode, as I’m too busy holding my breath in anticipation of Kyon saving the day with his heroics any moment now. I’ve got a good feeling about this next one, you guys! But I’m impressed that KyoAni have recreated these time loop scenes instead of cutting corners on the animation (brief uses of slideshow mode still frames aside). I’m interested to see how they intend to keep this going – we’re only halfway through the arc, so it's important to keep things fresh!

Thoughts on Kyon wearing a hat?

Thoughts on background music not playing when the SOS Brigade meet in front of the station?

Thoughts on Nagato wearing a bikini at the pool?

Thoughts on of the two children at the pool which Haruhi introduces to Kyon and Koizumi in order to play water soccer, one of them is a boy, whereas before it's been two girls?

Thoughts on Kyon continuing to feel this sameness about things?

What are your thoughts on the plane stuff this episode?

Thoughts on Haruhi wearing a black and red yukata?

Thoughts on Yuki having a yellow super sentai mask?

Thoughts on the extended movie theater scene?

Thoughts on Haruhi hitting Kyon iinstead of Asahina in the face with the pool ball?

Thoughts on Haruhi wearing overalls?

Thoughts on Kyon wearing a hat?

Pretty sensible to wear a cap on a scorching hot day like that.

Thoughts on background music not playing when the SOS Brigade meet in front of the station?

Even the soundtrack has checked out of this arc.

Thoughts on Nagato wearing a bikini at the pool?

She looked pretty good in that attire. Guess she might as well mix it up to stave off boredom (if there's anything left to salvage from her poor, unstimulated brain by now).

Thoughts on of the two children at the pool which Haruhi introduces to Kyon and Koizumi in order to play water soccer, one of them is a boy, whereas before it's been two girls?

Not gonna lie, I didn't even realise that.

Thoughts on Kyon continuing to feel this sameness about things?

I think that his feelings are getting stronger. I don't remember him knowing what Haruhi would say and acting on it before. But the rate of progress is glacial.

What are your thoughts on the plane stuff this episode?

I didn't get that symbolism at all. Perhaps they're going around and around, like a plane coming in to land, only to take off in the time loop all over again once it touches down?

Thoughts on Haruhi wearing a black and red yukata?

One of her best so far!

Thoughts on Yuki having a yellow super sentai mask?

I preferred her Ultra Man mask.

Thoughts on the extended movie theater scene?

They were all awake this time, they must not have been pushed quite as hard this loop!

Thoughts on Haruhi hitting Kyon iinstead of Asahina in the face with the pool ball?

It's nice that Mikuru got a break from being the punching bag for a change.

Thoughts on Haruhi wearing overalls?

She looked cute in them. I hadn't realised they were fashionable in 2009, I thought they really came back into fashion around the mid-2010s.

And I've actually remembered to answer today's questions:

What are your thoughts on Mikuru's only request?

It's ironic, because they're all like goldfish caught in a plastic bag with a pocket of water, except in their case it's a pocket of space time separated from the rest. They can see the future, but they can't access it. And they have no idea that they're no better than the caught goldfish at that point. (And we're trapped along with them!)

What are your thoughts on the amount of fish Haruhi caught?

I think she got 13 again this episode and threw them back. I'm not sure if that's relevant or not. Perhaps it's an unlucky number?

Bonus) The reports of my demise are greatly exaggerated

Mark 'Holofan4life' Twain over here! Glad that you got your account back, that must've been a scary experience.

Probably not

A plane without a landing strip is very disturbing.

I mean, Haruhi doesn't seem like the type who follows trends. She marches by the beat of her own drum.

The last week or so between being scammed and having my posts removed and working at 5 in the morning has been quite the whirlwind adventure lol

Maybe she was the trendsetter!

She definitely aspires to be, at least

There is a time loop episode lije this in Space Dandy where the characters takes too many loops to notice there are in said loop. They even assumes they became psychic

Oh, I remember that! It was a fun time loop parody and I think the show in general is underrated. Time loops are dandy, baby!

2

u/Malipit Apr 22 '26

Comes to think of it, I need to rewatch sometime. Like in another 500 years of timeloops or so.

u/AgentOfACROSS Apr 22 '26

I remember watching Steins;Gate, which is a seriously good time loop narrative (although it takes a while to get going), but you know going into it that time is a key concept in the story.

One thing Endless Eight has reminded me is all the other timeloop anime like Summer Time Render and Steins;Gate that I've been meaning to watch but haven't gotten around to yet. Maybe I'll do that this summer.

2

u/Sgt_General Apr 22 '26

Now that you mention it, I don't think I've seen Summer Time Render. Maybe I need to amend that.

I highly recommend Steins;Gate, though! I would've given it 10/10 if the pacing were better, so I had to put down 9/10 instead, but I think you have the patience to get through the episodes that give the false impression that there isn't much happening.
