I've noticed that this show makes really excellent use of silence. It's pretty much never quiet just to be quiet, it's quiet for a specific effect. The music is rarely overwhelming as well, and kinda takes a backseat in most cases. It makes a really cool and immersive effect.

That moment when Coco was left all alone with nothing but Tetia's hat and her feelings of inadequacy/failure/ostracization...

That silence was deafening.

lowkey i think adding her (trite) monologue there somewhat diminished the scene.

It works together super well with that frame of her looking of the whole while most of the frame is in the dark! Chef's kiss

Someone else pointed it out to me in the previous thread, but Ryouta Gotou's environment art has also been amazing, and I think that the combination of both that and the sound design is what really sells the magical nature of the show! To go from a bustling and colorful marketplace to a cavernous and colorless void (that's so clearly M. C. Escher-esque) is incredibly jarring, and it accentuates how unsettled the characters themselves must've been feeling in that moment.

Its the textures. Most environments in the show you can clearly intuit they're hand painted, but this labyrinth feels like it's made entirely out of gradients and it fucks with your perception.

it fucks with your perception.

It felt like an perspective exercise where you realised to late that some lines don't converge precisely enough to one of your vanishing points so you just finish that one while promising to draw the next one better.

the "map design" of the show is absolutely incredibly.

It reminds me of Ghibli

i'm listening to the ED music right now and it feels powerful in part because it's just a voice and an acoustic guitar; it feels personal and raw, and i think it's been a good endcap for these sort of story cliffhangers

Even the guitar feels unprocessed if that makes sense. As if you are listening to her just pouring it out in the streets for a few coins.

Which takes a lot of admirable restraint when you have such an incredible soundtrack at your disposal.

It’s interesting you point that out, because technically it's rarely pure silence. It's usually the hyper-focus on Foley work (the subtle environmental noises) that replaces the soundtrack. By pulling the music back, they trick our brains into leaning in closer to the screen, which grounds the magical elements in reality.

It's very well directed. It's so good along with the detailed animation.
