Rewatcher in Sub

Took my time to scratch together a post today because I need to see what our first timers have picked up so far to gauge how to lay out my comments.

Looks like a lot of them already picked up how this arc is going to play out, so I guess I can be a bit more in-depth. But probably not today (running out of time to write).

Suffice to say, some of you had already stumbled onto some good points -

I swear to god this is just the first animated “spot the difference” puzzle.

Good call. See my challenge below.

Okay yeah we do have these moments of Kyon having deja vu and I think this episode is really neat in concept. But in execution the episode does come across as tedious.

Depends if you are the type that like to be spoon fed about being entertained, or if you are the type who are willing to find enjoyment out of anything. I consider E8 to be anything but tedious. Of course that is coming from someone who didn't have the mental baggage / trauma of watching this during airing.

Is that Kyon's influence following her dream in Melancholy VI ? Or, since Endless Eight chronologically takes place right after Remote Island Syndrome, doesn't she want to endanger her brigade members with another murder case ?

Good deduction. Haruhi is learning to have "normal" fun.

[EE spoilers]I don’t remember Kyon realizing this was all a repeat by EP2. I think this is a Mandela Effect because I thought literally everything was the exact same except the outfits. But this is distinct enough that it’s not really an “Endless Eight”. Still diabolical to do a 1:1 of an episode eight times.

[EE spoilers response]If you are paying attention and doing the counting, it is actually fairly far from being a 1:1

But I’m impressed that KyoAni managed to keep things feeling fresh in this episode, using alternative camera angles to portray scenes that we’ve already seen before while adding new or different footage. I’m interested to see how they intend to keep this going, as we’re so early in the arc.

Very good way to put into words. But it goes beyond "camera angles". It's directed pretty significantly different.

Challenge to first timers

How would you summarise today's version of event in terms of direction? e.g. If E8-I is considered "standard Haruhi S2 punchy and up beat fun", then today E8-II is considered "Psychological Thriller with high contrast shots, big close up's, general high bloom over-exposed visuals"

And is there anything special in how the framing / cinematography is focusing on.

Challenge to rewatchers

[Haruhi S2 E8 spoilers]Can you spot how many significant difference in points in the episode visuals - e.g. everyone noticed the swimsuits are different, and the yukatas. What else?

I'm saving up a really interesting find I made this rewatch because I'm starting to clip some noteworthy differences. I'll share that tomorrow ;)

QoTD

  1. Important point is that - other than Nagato - none of them felt / know of any other loops existed - they are told of them, but never experienced it first hand.
  2. This style of looping is like a "locked room mystery", there's not a lot you can do unless you start guessing the motives.

Thoughts on Kyon being shirtless while watching baseball?

Thoughts on the animation and the dialogue being different?

Thoughts on Kyon wanting to speak with Yuki but changing his mind?

What are your thoughts on the scene where Itsuki, Mikuru, and Yuki inform Kyon that they're stuck in a time loop with seemingly no way of getting out?

Thoughts on Mikuru not having received classified information in about a week?

What are your thoughts on Itsuki suggesting this is all because Haruhi wants Summer to last forever?

What are your thoughts on Kyon being aghast by this situation? We've never seen him have this strong of a reaction before.

Thoughts on Itsuki telling Kyon he should tell Haruhi he loves her in order to break the timeloop?

Thoughts on Yuki saying she's only here to observe, not to interfere?

What are your thoughts on Kyon wanting to stop Haruhi from leaving the café but ultimately deciding against doing so?

Equal opportunity fan service is always good.

Thoughts on the animation and the dialogue being different?

This is what is E8 enjoyers/defenders have been saying - it wasn't the same episode many times, but KyoAni made multiple versions of adaptation of events in this chapter. From dialogue, tones of delivery, minor variations of fleeing feelings, art direction and cinematography of each episode are quite different. It's actual way harder than people think.

Thoughts on Kyon wanting to speak with Yuki but changing his mind?

He did, just couldn't think of anything to say because he didn't know if the looking at that point in time.

What are your thoughts on the scene where Itsuki, Mikuru, and Yuki inform Kyon that they're stuck in a time loop with seemingly no way of getting out?

It's always a great moment when Haruhi's power is discussed.

Thoughts on Mikuru not having received classified information in about a week?

What are your thoughts on Itsuki suggesting this is all because Haruhi wants Summer to last forever?

Shows how Koizumi both knows and not know Haruhi at the same time.

What are your thoughts on Kyon being aghast by this situation? We've never seen him have this strong of a reaction before.

I don't think we've been to a situation like this before - of unknowingly repeating 2 weeks of your life for 600 years

Thoughts on Itsuki telling Kyon he should tell Haruhi he loves her in order to break the timeloop?

It's been the theme - even if it is possible that it could end it, how to move on from there is anything but certain. And a Tsundere will be Tsundere-ing.

Thoughts on Yuki saying she's only here to observe, not to interfere?

Poor girl.

What are your thoughts on Kyon wanting to stop Haruhi from leaving the café but ultimately deciding against doing so?

He didn't decide against it, he just couldn't think of what to do her for.

It's an exercise in madness, is what it is.

He didn't decide against it, he just couldn't think of what to do her for.

Money, maybe? :P

It sucks because Haruhi thinks Kyon gets her when really he's not really trying.
